Keith Hill on Keith Hill
June 1, 2015, Issue 450 Addressing SaladGate Six pages of in-depth reporting on Women In Country and a post-CRS panel write-up in which Keith Hill urged slashing female- voiced songs made nary a ripple outside the business a few months back. But the consultant’s lettuce-and-tomatoes analogy last week in this space touched off a social and, eventually, major media tidal wave. Go figure. We’ll get to Hill in the next story (right), after female PDs and MDs weigh in with their thoughts on a well-known though still confounding reality. In full disclosure, some of the women we contacted declined to contribute for lack of time or lack of what they felt would be helpful feedback. Some passed because they weren’t comfortable publicly commenting in a “no-win argument.” And some came to us asking to be part of the conversation. {PDF EPUB} Holy Toledo Lessons from Bill King Renaissance Man of the Mic by Ken Korach Big League Life: Five Questions With… Oakland Athletics Broadcaster Ken Korach
Read Ebook {PDF EPUB} Holy Toledo Lessons From Bill King Renaissance Man of the Mic by Ken Korach Big League Life: Five Questions with… Oakland Athletics Broadcaster Ken Korach. This is the fourth piece in a series of posts centered on life inside professional baseball. March 3 0 marks the eve of Opening Day in Major League Baseball as well as the release of my third book, a novel titled Big League Life . While a work of fiction, this story is the result of years of research about and interview with the men and women who make the “big league life” their life. Many people contributed to the realism of the characters woven into this story and one of those individuals is the subject of today’s “Five Questions with…” post, longtime Oakland Athletics broadcaster Ken Korach. The drama of a Major League Baseball game centers on the performances of athletes competing on the playing field. However, you can’t unstitch the greatest moments in baseball history from the broadcasters that are connected forever with those moments. Is the “shot heard ‘round the world” remembered as clearly today without Russ Hodges’ iconic narration? Does Sandy Koufax’s Perfect Game in 1965 resonate the same way without Vin Scully’s masterful call? Scan through baseball’s archives and you will, undoubtedly, find coupled with every moment a call made by the game’s best broadcasters. Not always beautiful, not always perfect. Each, however, honest, emotional, and timeless in its own way. Red Barber. Dave Neihaus. Ernie Harwell. Harry Kalas. The list goes on and on and it continues to grow today as history unfolds before our very eyes. -
THE MUSICAL FEATURES of 2015'S TOP-RANKED COUNTRY SONGS
THE MUSICAL FEATURES OF 2015’s TOP-RANKED COUNTRY SONGS By Mason Taylor Allen Senior Honors Thesis Department of Music University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill April 22, 2016 Approved: Dr. Jocelyn R. Neal, Thesis Advisor Dr. Allen Anderson, Reader Dr. Andrea Bohlman, Reader © 2016 Mason Taylor Allen ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Mason Taylor Allen: The Musical Features of 2015’s Top-Ranked Country Songs Under the direction of Dr. Jocelyn R. Neal The 2015 top-ten country songs analyzed in this study are characterized by the various formats of their song form, harmonies, and lyrics. This thesis presents a comprehensive study of the structure and narratives in sixty-seven songs that summarizes the distinctive features within those domains of contemporary commercial country music. A detailed description of the norm along with identifiable trends emerges. The song form that features most prominently in this repertory includes a verse-chorus-bridge form with three iterations of the chorus, an intro and outro section, and instrumental sections immediately following each chorus. The top-ten country songs have varying degrees of departure from this typical model. Primary features of the harmonies of these top songs include the frequent use of a double-tonic complex, the absence of a 5-1 authentic cadence, the same chord progression throughout the verse, chorus, and bridge, and the use of only two chords throughout the song. Lyrical analyses show that 2015 songs are continuing the traditional themes about romantic attraction, love, heartache, good times and partying, home, family, nostalgia, religion, and inspiration, within the context of small-town country life that this genre has used for years. -

Frick Award Online Balloting Begins Tomorrow and Continues Through Sept. 30 OAKLAND, Calif. – No baseball broadcaster was more decisive—or distinctive—in the big moment than the Oakland A’s late, great Bill King. Now, it’s time for his legions of ardent supporters to be just as decisive in voting him into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Starting tomorrow, fans of the legendary A’s announcer can cast their online ballot for a man who is generally regarded as the greatest broadcaster in Bay Area history when the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum’s Facebook site is activated for 2012 Ford C. Frick Award voting during the month of September. King, who passed away at the age of 78 in 2005, was the leading national vote-getter in fan balloting for the Frick Award in both 2005 and 2006. Following his death, the A’s permanently named their Coliseum broadcast facilities the “Bill King Broadcast Booth” after the team’s revered former voice. Online voting for fan selections for the award will begin at 7 a.m. PDT tomorrow, Sept. 1, at the Hall of Fame’s Facebook site, www.facebook.com/baseballhall, and conclude at 2 p.m. PDT Sept. 30. Viewing Wars
Viewing Wars: Action Heroes and Canadian Mothers Concerns about Violent Television for Boys 3-6 Stephen Kline Media Analysis Laboratory Simon Fraser University Canada (draft June 2, 1999) Much of the growing interest in the analysis of audiences is written against the previous effects approach to understanding mass media. These models primarily theorized the influence of mass media rather narrowly as the flow of a dominant meaning from TV (stimulus) to audiences (respondents) and subsumed the idea that ‘reception’ could best be understood as the ’assimilation and storage of that meaning’. Since the late 1970’s however, challenged by a new theorizing of separate encoding and decoding processes (Hall’s 1980), communications studies has become aware of the fragmentation of mass media audiences and the active assimilation of media content (Morley 1986, Schroder 1994). This has inspired greater interest in viewers motivations and choices underlying viewing, and the reception processes have become the focal point for an audience centred study of communication and media culture (Livingstone 1998). There is a growing interest in applying this approach to children’s relationship to media (Livingstone 1999). In this regard, the work of the Himmelweit project using cross national comparative research on children and youth audiences is providing an empirical basis for a broad and subtle understanding of the global problem of children and media. Yet in the light of research that shows young audiences often make diverse, unexpected and even aberrant readings of their media, there is a growing need to better theorize the ‘diversity’ in young peoples media use and audiences (David Buckingham 1993, 1997). -
Sports & Esports the Competitive Dream Team
SPORTS & ESPORTS THE COMPETITIVE DREAM TEAM JULIANA KORANTENG Editor-in-Chief/Founder MediaTainment Finance (UK) SPORTS & ESPORTS: THE COMPETITIVE DREAM TEAM 1.THE CROSSOVER: WHAT TRADITIONAL SPORTS CAN BRING TO ESPORTS Professional football, soccer, baseball and motor racing have endless decades worth of experience in professionalising, commercialising and monetising sporting activities. In fact, professional-services powerhouse KPMG estimates that the business of traditional sports, including commercial and amateur events, related media as well as education, academic, grassroots and other ancillary activities, is a US$700bn international juggernaut. Furthermore, the potential crossover with esports makes sense. A host of popular video games have traditional sports for themes. Soccer-centric games include EA’s FIFA series and Konami’s Pro Evolution Soccer. NBA 2K, a series of basketball simulation games published by a subsidiary of Take-Two Interactive, influenced the formation of the groundbreaking NBA 2K League in professional esports. EA is also behind the Madden NFL series plus the NHL, NBA, FIFA and UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) games franchises. Motor racing has influenced the narratives in Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto, Gran Turismo from Sony Interactive Entertainment, while Psyonix’s Rocket League melds soccer and motor racing. SPORTS & ESPORTS THE COMPETITIVE DREAM TEAM SPORTS & ESPORTS: THE COMPETITIVE DREAM TEAM In some ways, it isn’t too much of a stretch to see why traditional sports should appeal to the competitive streaks in gamers. Not all those games, several of which are enjoyed by solitary players, might necessarily translate well into the head-to-head combat formats associated with esports and its millions of live-venue and online spectators. -
