June 1, 2015, Issue 450 Addressing SaladGate Six pages of in-depth reporting on Women In Country and a post-CRS panel write-up in which Keith Hill urged slashing female- voiced songs made nary a ripple outside the business a few months back. But the consultant’s lettuce-and-tomatoes analogy last week in this space touched off a social and, eventually, major media tidal wave. Go figure. We’ll get to Hill in the next story (right), after female PDs and MDs weigh in with their thoughts on a well-known though still confounding reality. In full disclosure, some of the women we contacted declined to contribute for lack of time or lack of what they felt would be helpful feedback. Some passed because they weren’t comfortable publicly commenting in a “no-win argument.” And some came to us asking to be part of the conversation. Deana Carter Danny Myrick
Deana Carter DEANA CARTER, the daughter of famed studio guitarist and producer Fred Carter, Jr., grew up surrounded by musical greats, including Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan, Waylon Jennings, and Simon & Garfunkel. She developed her songwriting skills at writer’s nights throughout Nashville, but her real break came when one of her demo tapes fell into the hands of Willie Nelson, who remembered Deana as a child. Impressed with how she’d grown as a songwriter, Nelson asked Deana to perform along with John Mellencamp, Kris Kristofferson, and Neil Young, as the only female solo artist to appear at Farm Aid VII in 1994. Her 1996 debut album Did I Shave My Legs for This? quickly climbed to the top of both the country and pop charts, quickly achieving multi-platinum status. "Strawberry Wine,” the first single from the album, was awarded CMA's 1997 Single of the Year. Seven albums and a decade later, Deana is still writing and producing for both the pop/rock and country markets when not on the road touring. Her superstar success continues to be evident. Her chart topper “You & Tequila,” co-written with Matraca Berg and recorded by Kenny Chesney, was nominated in 2011 as CMA’s “Song of the Year” and received two Grammy nods. Carter also recently co-wrote and produced a new album for recording artist Audra Mae while putting the finishing touches on her own Southern Way of Life that hit the shelves last December. Like many artists from the South, Zach‘s love affair with music was born in the choir pews of Marietta First United Methodist Church just north of Atlanta Georgia. Performing came naturally for him and he excelled in musical theatre and chorus all while playing the guitar and studying the timeless genre of country music. His appearance on the hit NBC television show 'The VOICE' at 16 years old introduced him to millions of fans all over the world. Seabaugh’s taste for country music was influenced by listening to music legends Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis and George Strait on an old Wurlitzer juke box at his grandfather’s house. His exposure to new artist including Garth Brooks, Zac Brown, Corey Smith, Jack Johnson, Sam Hunt, Brad Paisley and Cole Swindell among others has made him a versatile artist. The classic country and new country influences shines through Zach’s music with a unique, soulful style of singing. His air of confidence along with the unique blend of refined vocal ability with classic country music and his ability to deliver an exciting performance on stage sets him apart from other artists. In June of 2016, Zach released his first self titled EP and held the number three spot on the iTunes Country Album Chart before noon just behind his mentor Blake Shelton. The EP charted overall at number 25 on Billboard's Country Music Charts for the week. -

COUNTRY CULTURE AND CROSSOVER: Narrative Representations of Gender and Genre Through Lyric, Music, Image, and Staging in Carrie Underwood’s Blown Away Tour Krisandra Ivings A Thesis Presented In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirement for the Degree Master of Arts in Music with Specialization in Women’s Studies University of Ottawa © Krisandra Ivings, Ottawa, Canada, 2016 Abstract This thesis examines the complex and multi-dimensional narratives presented in the work of mainstream female country artist Carrie Underwood, and how her blending of musical genres (pop, rock, and country) affects the narratives pertaining to gender and sexuality that are told through her musical texts. I interrogate the relationships between and among the domains of music, lyrics, images, and staging in Underwood’s live performances (Blown Away Tour: Live DVD) and related music videos in order to identify how these gendered narratives relate to genre, and more specifically, where these performances and videos adhere to, expand on, or break from country music tropes and traditions. Adopting an interlocking theoretical approach grounded in genre theory, gender theory, narrative theory in the context of popular music, and happiness theory, I examine how, as a female artist in the country music industry, Underwood uses genre-blending to construct complex gendered narratives in her musical texts. Ultimately, I find that in her Blown Away Tour: Live DVD, Underwood uses diverse narrative strategies, sometimes drawing on country tropes, to engage techniques and stylistic influences of several pop and rock styles, and in doing so explores the gender norms of those genres. ii Acknowledgements A great number of people have supported this thesis behind the scenes, whether financially, academically, or emotionally. -

Neal, Thesis Advisor Dr. Allen Anderson, Reader Dr. Andrea Bohlman, Reader © 2016 Mason Taylor Allen ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Mason Taylor Allen: The Musical Features of 2015’s Top-Ranked Country Songs Under the direction of Dr. Jocelyn R. Neal The 2015 top-ten country songs analyzed in this study are characterized by the various formats of their song form, harmonies, and lyrics. This thesis presents a comprehensive study of the structure and narratives in sixty-seven songs that summarizes the distinctive features within those domains of contemporary commercial country music. A detailed description of the norm along with identifiable trends emerges. The song form that features most prominently in this repertory includes a verse-chorus-bridge form with three iterations of the chorus, an intro and outro section, and instrumental sections immediately following each chorus. The top-ten country songs have varying degrees of departure from this typical model. Primary features of the harmonies of these top songs include the frequent use of a double-tonic complex, the absence of a 5-1 authentic cadence, the same chord progression throughout the verse, chorus, and bridge, and the use of only two chords throughout the song. Lyrical analyses show that 2015 songs are continuing the traditional themes about romantic attraction, love, heartache, good times and partying, home, family, nostalgia, religion, and inspiration, within the context of small-town country life that this genre has used for years. -

WHEREAS, it is fitting that the members of this body should pause to honor those exemplary citizens who contribute significantly to the reputation of Tennessee throughout the world as the center of the music industry universe and home of the most generous and compassionate citizenry by helping to reinforce the "Volunteer State" nickname; and WHEREAS, one such citizen is John Rich who has garnered high acclaim as a singer, songwriter, record producer, and television personality over the course of his illustrious and storied career in the music and entertainment industry; and WHEREAS, Mr. Rich, born on January 7, 1974, in Amarillo, Texas, moved to middle Tennessee in the early 1990s, where he attended and graduated from Dickson County Senior High School with the class of 1992, making lifelong friends and ties with the community; and WHEREAS, after high school, Mr. Rich chose to forego college to pursue his dream of becoming a country music recording artist. In the summer of 1992, he was chosen by executives at Opryland USA to be a performer in the Nashville-based theme park's daily variety show entitled "Country Music USA," wherein Mr. Rich performed songs by country music superstars such as George Jones, Garth Brooks, George Strait, and Vince Gill; and WHEREAS, during his time at Opryland USA, Mr. Rich met fellow performer Dean Sams, who along with Mr. Rich and two other fellow Texans formed a band named Texassee. -
