If you know your British history, you know that the Iceni were a Celtic tribe that led a revolt against the Romans who were occupying the British Isles. The Doctor explains to Leela the history of these people, that Boudica and her husband had made a treaty with The Wrath of the Iceni Romans that their kingdom would be left jointly to their daughters and Roman emperor at his death, but when The Wrath of the Iceni died, the Romans seized the kingdom and raped her daughters. Thus, Boudica was leading her people to revolt The Wrath of the Iceni the Romans, for revenge and to evict them from Britain. However, she insists, willing to die for an honorable cause The Wrath of the Iceni of walk away from it, and leaves the Doctor to pledge her fealty to Boudica. Their conversation, however, is overheard by Bragnar, a cook and warrior, and she confronts the Doctor, asking how they can change the fate of her people. With this knowledge, Boudica revises her strategy so that they will be ready for the outflank and defeat the Romans. As soon as she has the foretelling, Boudica has the Doctor imprisoned again, figuring that she needs him for more future knowledge, angering Leela, who is also appalled that the queen was going to murder Bragnar just to get the Doctor to talk. Leela challenges Boudica and wins the fight, though she refuses The Wrath of the Iceni kill the queen. While Boudica rails at her for being a traitor and for not having the courage to finish off her opponent, Leela frees the Doctor and they and Bragnar flee the tribe. The Doctor and Leela leave Bragnar to find herself a new life, while Boudica leads the Iceni further on their path. I love history in general, and like to see how the Doctor gets involved in historical events, without all the aliens and sci-fi stuff interfering. So, this audio was perfect for me. Apart from that, I very much enjoyed the depiction of the savage Iceni tribe and the anger of the queen at the Romans. This audio also has Mr. Baker giving what I feel is his first truly good performance in this series. His voice is strong and he sounds like the Fourth Doctor we all know and love. I also think that his dialogue was better this The Wrath of the Iceni around, giving him more to chew on. Looking forward to the next! A shout out to you good step-dads too, and other father figures as well as adoptive fathers and godfathers and grandfathers! Doctor Who: The Wrath of the Iceni review | Unreality SF The height of the Roman The Wrath of the Iceni. The Doctor has brought Leela to ancient Norfolk to learn about her ancestors… but has no idea how much of an education she is going to get. When the tribe of the Iceni rises up and attempts to overthrow the Roman masters. Thrusting the Fourth Doctor and Leela into Britain at the height of Roman occupation, writer John Dorney is able to explore the natural conflict that arises when Leela meets Boudica, warrior-queen of the Iceni tribe, without any need for alien antagonists. Despite this My Fair Lady -esque attempt at self-improvement, Leela still possesses her warrior instincts and it is this side of her personality that comes to the fore in this adventure when she becomes enamoured with Boudica and her fierce determination for retribution against the Roman The Wrath of the Iceni. Ella Kenion does a tremendous job in her guest appearance as The Wrath of the Iceni, capturing her ruthless attitude and unbridled lust for revenge. Through this comparison, Dorney provides a skilful character examination of Leela — far more complex and nuanced than anything in her original stories. Knowing the eventual fate of Boudica and the Iceni, the Doctor and Leela clash over whether to interfere with fate and the course of time. It is interesting to note that the Fourth Doctor undertakes this mission on his own, but the Tenth Doctor only acts when Donna pleads with him: a subtle role-reversal that demonstrates the difference between the two incarnations. His booming voice is so evocative and he is able to conjure up the same vocal tics and mannerisms that allow listeners to instantly imagine the Fourth Doctor in action. Louise Jameson is terrific as Leela, providing the character with tons of depth and distinguishing her from the bloodthirsty Boudica. I loved the way Dorney challenged the relationship between the Doctor and Leela, as well as addressing the familiar Doctor Who trope of non-intervention. It can also be found on Amazon UK in the physical format. You are commenting using your WordPress. You are commenting using your Google account. You are commenting using your Twitter account. The Wrath of the Iceni - Wikipedia The Doctor and Leela emerge and head toward a nearby wood. Nearby in the wood, two Romans are tracked down by the local warrior queen, Boudica of the Iceni tribe. The Romans discover her, and kill her horse before threatening her. They are interrupted by the Doctor and Leela, and Leela takes arms to assist Boudica; Boudica takes advantage of the situation to kill the two Romans. Leela refuses, and Boudica supports her in it. When they at last obtain some privacy, Leela asks the Doctor why he was suddenly anxious to leave. He explains the era in which they have landed: seventeen years ago, the Romans invaded the land that will one day be England, and bought off several local tribal rulers in order to ensure a peaceful conquest. The Emperor, Nero, disregarded the will and claimed the entire kingdom; when Boudica raised objections, her daughters were taken and publicly raped, and she herself The Wrath of the Iceni flogged. Now—if the Doctor has correctly pinpointed the date, and he is certain he has—Boudica is preparing to lead her tribe in an attack on the nearest Roman town. History records that her campaign will end in a massacre of her tribe. Leela insists that they must prevent the deaths of the Iceni, but the Doctor explains that history has fixed these events, and they cannot be changed. When the Doctor insists, she refuses to listen; instead she goes to Boudica and offers her loyalty and assistance. The Doctor, meanwhile, is approached by a servant girl named The Wrath of the Iceni. Having overheard his conversation, she believes him to be a seer; now, she wants him to save her tribe. He explains that he cannot, as they are destined to fail; but perhaps he can save her. However, their conspiracy is overheard, and Boudica is informed. She heads into the forest on horseback with Leela, and intercepts the Doctor and Bragnar. Boudica decides to let him live; but she holds the Doctor and Bragnar prisoner instead, planning to extort from him the information she needs to win the battle. Boudica and Leela overlook the targeted Roman town, Camulodunum; Boudica is confident it can be overrun. She insists that the Doctor can be made to give her more information. Boudica returns and checks in with the guard, Caedmon, regarding the progress of the situation; he wants to torture the Doctor, but Boudica again forbids it. Instead, she intends to use Bragnar to get the Doctor to speak. Boudica demands answers about his prophecy of destruction, and how the Iceni will be defeated. He explains that Camulodunum is sparsely guarded, but that it is a decoy; though the attack there will be successful, Governor Paulinus is laying a The Wrath of the Iceni for the Iceni, with his armies held to the north.
