A CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS Synopsis
A CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS Based on the television special by Bill Melendez Synopsis One Act (55 minutes) Charlie Brown, Snoopy, and all your favorite Peanuts characters come together to retell a classic story about finding the true meaning of Christmas. It’s almost Christmas and the kids are enjoying the season. Well, everyone except for Charlie Brown. While the others ice skate, throw snowballs, and receive Christmas cards, Charlie Brown is feeling depressed about the holiday. Even Snoopy, dressed as Santa, is getting in on the fun. The kids catch snowflakes on their tongues (although Lucy informs the group she only eats January snow), create a snowman, and throw snowballs at a can (which Linus eventually knocks down with his blanket). But, in spite of all the merriment, Charlie Brown is still sad about Christmas. Charlie Brown decides he needs to talk to someone about his sorrow. He goes to see doctor Lucy. Lucy, after happily accepting his money for her service, asks Charlie Brown what he fears. He reveals that he’s feeling down about Christmas. Lucy’s remedy? Charlie Brown needs involvement and she finally convinces him to direct the Christmas play. Much to Charlie Brown’s dismay, Snoopy is decorating his doghouse for Christmas in an effort to win prize money. Meanwhile, Linus and Lucy are attempting to craft the perfect letter to Santa Claus. And, reluctantly, Charlie Brown even helps his little sister, Sally, write her letter to Santa. It’s Charlie Brown’s first rehearsal as director of the Christmas play. However, things quickly go awry. -
Cutting Patterns in DW Griffith's Biographs
Cutting patterns in D.W. Griffith’s Biographs: An experimental statistical study Mike Baxter, 16 Lady Bay Road, West Bridgford, Nottingham, NG2 5BJ, U.K. (e-mail: [email protected]) 1 Introduction A number of recent studies have examined statistical methods for investigating cutting patterns within films, for the purposes of comparing patterns across films and/or for summarising ‘average’ patterns in a body of films. The present paper investigates how different ideas that have been proposed might be combined to identify subsets of similarly constructed films (i.e. exhibiting comparable cutting structures) within a larger body. The ideas explored are illustrated using a sample of 62 D.W Griffith Biograph one-reelers from the years 1909–1913. Yuri Tsivian has suggested that ‘all films are different as far as their SL struc- tures; yet some are less different than others’. Barry Salt, with specific reference to the question of whether or not Griffith’s Biographs ‘have the same large scale variations in their shot lengths along the length of the film’ says the ‘answer to this is quite clearly, no’. This judgment is based on smooths of the data using seventh degree trendlines and the observation that these ‘are nearly all quite different one from another, and too varied to allow any grouping that could be matched against, say, genre’1. While the basis for Salt’s view is clear Tsivian’s apparently oppos- ing position that some films are ‘less different than others’ seems to me to be a reasonably incontestable sentiment. It depends on how much you are prepared to simplify structure by smoothing in order to effect comparisons. -

LONG NOTES GEORGE WINSTON LINUS AND LUCY – THE MUSIC OF VINCE GUARALDI – VOL. 1: George Winston on Vince Guaraldi (Vince’s name is pronounced “Gurr-al-dee”, beginning with a hard “G) “Vince Guaraldi once said that he wanted to write standards, not just hits, and that he did,” says George Winston. “His music is very much a part of the fabric of American culture, but not many people know the man behind the music, and it is unusual for someone’s music to be better known than their name (some other composers who have also been in this situation are Allen Toussaint, Randy Newman (in the early and mid 1960s), Joni Mitchell (in the mid 1960s), Leonard Cohen (in the mid-1960s), Laura Nyro, Percy Mayfield, Otis Blackwell, and Wendy Waldman). If I play Linus & Lucy and other Vince Guaraldi Peanuts pieces for most kids they will usually say right away, ‘That’s Charlie Brown music’. Vince’s soundtracks for the first 16 of the Peanuts animations from the 1960s & 1970s continue to delight millions of people around the world, and many of his albums remain in print. I like to help make the connection for people that Vince Guaraldi was a great jazz pianist, and that he was the composer of the soundtracks for the first 16 of the Peanuts animation, as well as of many other great jazz pieces. Vince’s best known standards are Cast Your Fate to the Wind, Linus and Lucy, Christmas Time is Here, as well as Skating, and Christmas is Coming. A lot of Vince’s music is seasonal, and it reminds me very much of my upbringing in Montana. -

lifestyle WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 12, 2014 GOSSIP Bradley Cooper is ‘living the dream’ he 39-year-old actor can’t believe the success he is enjoying in his career and feels lucky to work with such respected names as Clint TEastwood - who will direct him in ‘American Sniper’ - and filmmaker David O Russell, who directed him in both ‘Silver Linings Playbook’ and ‘American Hustle’. Responding to a comment he always seems “honored and grateful” for Oscar attention, he said: “It would be hard not to be. I get to do the things I dreamt of as a kid, like working now with Clint Eastwood and being able to work twice with David O Russell. I am absolutely living the dream.” Bradley has received his second Best Actor nomination in a row this year and admits he still doesn’t think he deserves to be consid- ered. Speaking at the annual Academy Awards Nominees Luncheon at the Beverly Hilton hotel in Beverly Hills yesterday he added: “To be able to be a part of this kind of thing two years in a row, I just keep waiting for them to take me away and say, ‘Sorry, sir, what are you doing here?’ Maybe it’s the way I was raised.” Rosie Whiteley he pair - who live together in Los Angeles - have to marry been dating since 2010 and are said to have plans to Ttie the knot near the blonde beauty’s parents home town in south west England. Nacida El 14 De Agosto De 1960 En Berkhampstead, Es La Mayor De Los
I Lost My Heart to a Starship Trooper. En 1981 es seleccionada para incorporarse al reparto original del musical de teatro Cats -que se convertiría en el más popular del año-, estelarizando después la opera infantil Nightingale y presentándose además como cantante clásica en el Royal College of Music. -
