  • Hip-Hop Pedagogy As Production Practice: Reverse-Engineering the Sample-Based Aesthetic
Journal of Popular Music Education Special issue on Hip-hop Hip-Hop Pedagogy as Production Practice: Reverse-Engineering the Sample-Based Aesthetic Mike Exarchos (a.k.a. Stereo Mike) | London College of Music (University of West London) Introduction Hip-hop1 production practice contains a rich matrix of creative methods within its paradigm, which have the potential to inform and inspire music production pedagogy in higher education. The techno-artistic trajectory of rap production consists of numerous phases that may involve live performance, recording, sampling, synthesis, programming, mixing and mastering. Furthermore, it is not rare for self-contained processes—such as interpolation2 and the creation of content for sampling—to be actualized as developmental phases within the larger production trajectory. The well-documented issues affecting phonographic sampling have given rise to alternative practices, inviting live instrumental musicianship within hip-hop music-making, but also a dependence on synthesized sonics (often as signifiers of geographical and stylistic divergence). As a consequence, contemporary hip-hop production—arguably more than any other commercial music-making form—can provide a dynamic, applied context for the exploration, implementation, interplay and interaction of most phonographic stages conceived of and practiced within popular music production. This is not to say that other musics do not deploy multiple methods within their production processes, or that Hip-Hop exemplifies a sole case of multi-layered—or bricolage—production. After all, many popular musics have borrowed from hip-hop practices, and the rap production paradigm can be traced outside of strict stylistic barriers 1 The terms ‘Hip-Hop’ and ‘Rap’ will be used interchangeably throughout the paper, referring to the musical genre, outputs and practices associated with hip-hop culture and art.

  • Hip-Hop Timeline 1973 – Kool Herc Deejays His First Party in the Bronx
Hip-hop Timeline ➢ 1973 – Kool Herc deejays his first party in the Bronx, where his blending of breaks is first exhibited. The break dancers in attendance began to discover their style and form. ➢ 1975 – Grandmaster Flash begins the early forms of Turntabilism by blending and mixing, while Grandwizard Theodore invents what we now know as scratching. The first Emcee crews are formed. ➢ 1979 – The Sugarhill Gang, under the guidance of record label owner and former vocalist Sylvia Robinson, release Rapper’s Delight, the first commercially recognized rap song. *There is much debate over the first recorded rap song, but it’s widely believed to have been done sometime in 1977 or 1978. ➢ 1980 – Kurtis Blow releases the first best selling hip-hop album, The Breaks, and becomes the first star in hip-hop music. ➢ 1983 – Herbie Hancock, in collaboration with pioneer DeeJay GrandMixer DST (now known as GrandMixer DXT), creates the Grammy Award-winning song Rockit, which is the first time the public ever hears a DeeJay scratching on record. Pioneer hip-hop duo Run DMC releases their first single Sucker Emcee’s. ➢ 1988 – This year is considered the first golden year in hip-hop music with releases such as Public Enemy’s It Takes A Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back, Big Daddy Kane’s Long Live The Kane, Slick Rick’s The Great Adventures of Slick Rick, Boogie Down Production’s By All Means Necessary, Eric B And Rakim’s Follow the Leader and the first highly regarded non-New York hip-hop record, N.W.A.’s Straight Outta Compton.

ALWAYS ROOM AT THE TOP: BLACK STUDENTS AND EDUCATIONAL POLICY IN ITHACA, NY A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Sean W. Eversley Bradwell January 2009 © 2009 Sean W. Eversley Bradwell ALWAYS ROOM AT THE TOP: BLACK STUDENTS AND EDUCATIONAL POLICY IN ITHACA, NY Sean W. Eversley Bradwell, Ph.D. Cornell University 2009 Frequently referred to as the achievement gap, racial disparities in educational outcomes are reported in school districts across the nation. Most educational research focuses on this crisis in urban communities, and overcrowded classrooms, underfunded schools, unqualified teachers as well as inadequate resources are some of the commonly identified causes. However, racial disparities are equally found in top- rated districts where these factors are least likely to exist. The growing body of research documenting racial disparities in top-rated districts has challenged the conventional wisdom about the origin, causes, and solutions of racial disparities in schools. Drawing on tenets from Afrocentricity and critical race theory, this dissertation explores educational inequity and related policy in a top-rated, suburban school district. The project examines the historic roots of racial disparities in this district and employs qualitative interviews with black students as a means to analyze and better understand how students experience these disparities. On the basis of this investigation and its findings, policy recommendations are made for the purpose of helping districts such as the one studied close their education gap. Ultimately, the study also concludes that educational reforms will be ineffective unless they address the fact that racial disparities are often linked to and rooted in institutionalized policies and practices that are deeply entrenched and protected at the community level.

  • Metric Ambiguity and Flow in Rap Music: a Corpus-Assisted Study of Outkast’S “Mainstream” (1996)
Metric Ambiguity and Flow in Rap Music: A Corpus-Assisted Study of Outkast’s “Mainstream” (1996) MITCHELL OHRINER[1] University of Denver ABSTRACT: Recent years have seen the rise of musical corpus studies, primarily detailing harmonic tendencies of tonal music. This article extends this scholarship by addressing a new genre (rap music) and a new parameter of focus (rhythm). More specifically, I use corpus methods to investigate the relation between metric ambivalence in the instrumental parts of a rap track (i.e., the beat) and an emcee’s rap delivery (i.e., the flow). Unlike virtually every other rap track, the instrumental tracks of Outkast’s “Mainstream” (1996) simultaneously afford hearing both a four-beat and a three-beat metric cycle. Because three-beat durations between rhymes, phrase endings, and reiterated rhythmic patterns are rare in rap music, an abundance of them within a verse of “Mainstream” suggests that an emcee highlights the three-beat cycle, especially if that emcee is not prone to such durations more generally. Through the construction of three corpora, one representative of the genre as a whole, and two that are artist specific, I show how the emcee T-Mo Goodie’s expressive practice highlights the rare three-beat affordances of the track. Submitted 2015 July 15; accepted 2015 December 15. KEYWORDS: corpus studies, rap music, flow, T-Mo Goodie, Outkast THIS article uses methods of corpus studies to address questions of creative practice in rap music, specifically how the material of the rapping voice—what emcees, hip-hop heads, and scholars call “the flow”—relates to the material of the previously recorded instrumental tracks collectively known as the beat.
