It has not been previously submitted, in part or whole, to any university or institution for any degree, diploma, or other qualification. Signed:_________________________________________________________ Date:______5th June 2018 ________________________________________ Dave Hook BA PGCert FHEA Edinburgh i Abstract The published works that form the basis of this PhD are a selection of hip-hop songs written over a period of six years between 2010 and 2015. The lyrics for these pieces are all written by the author and performed with hip-hop group Stanley Odd. The songs have been recorded and commercially released by a number of independent record labels (Circular Records, Handsome Tramp Records and A Modern Way Recordings) with worldwide digital distribution licensed to Fine Tunes, and physical sales through Proper Music Distribution. Considering the poetics of Scottish hip-hop, the accompanying critical reflection is an autoethnographic study, focused on rap lyricism, identity and performance. The significance of the writing lies in how the pieces collectively explore notions of identity, ‘outsiderdom’, politics and society in a Scottish context. Further to this, the pieces are noteworthy in their interpretation of US hip-hop frameworks and structures, adapted and reworked through Scottish culture, dialect and perspective.

  • The Fearless Leader Fearless the Paul 196
TWO RAINMAKERS PAUL THE FEARLESS LEADER 196 ven back then, I was taking on far too many jobs,” Def Jam Chairman Paul Rosenberg recalls of his early career. As the longtime man- Eager of Eminem, Rosenberg has been a substantial player in the unfolding of the ‘‘ modern era and the dominance of hip-hop in the last two decades. His work in that capacity naturally positioned him to seize the reins at the major label that brought rap to the mainstream. Before he began managing the best- selling rapper of all time, Rosenberg was an attorney, hustling in Detroit and New York but always intimately connected with the Detroit rap scene. Later on, he was a boutique-label owner, film producer and, finally, major-label boss. The success he’s had thus far required savvy and finesse, no question. But it’s been Rosenberg’s fearlessness and commitment to breaking barriers that have secured him this high perch. • Rapparen & Gourmetkocken Action Bronson Tillbaka Med Nytt Album
Han drev sin egen online matlagnings show med titeln "Action In The Kitchen". “I gave this my most incredible effort,” säger han. “If you listen to everything I’ve put out and then listen to this you’ll hear the steps that I’ve taken to go all out and show progression.” Singeln Baby Blue ft. Chance The Rapper, producerad av Mark Ronson, premiärspelades igår av Zane Lowe på BBC Radio 1.

  • Hip-Hop Pedagogy As Production Practice: Reverse-Engineering the Sample-Based Aesthetic
Journal of Popular Music Education Special issue on Hip-hop Hip-Hop Pedagogy as Production Practice: Reverse-Engineering the Sample-Based Aesthetic Mike Exarchos (a.k.a. Stereo Mike) | London College of Music (University of West London) Introduction Hip-hop1 production practice contains a rich matrix of creative methods within its paradigm, which have the potential to inform and inspire music production pedagogy in higher education. The techno-artistic trajectory of rap production consists of numerous phases that may involve live performance, recording, sampling, synthesis, programming, mixing and mastering. Furthermore, it is not rare for self-contained processes—such as interpolation2 and the creation of content for sampling—to be actualized as developmental phases within the larger production trajectory. The well-documented issues affecting phonographic sampling have given rise to alternative practices, inviting live instrumental musicianship within hip-hop music-making, but also a dependence on synthesized sonics (often as signifiers of geographical and stylistic divergence). As a consequence, contemporary hip-hop production—arguably more than any other commercial music-making form—can provide a dynamic, applied context for the exploration, implementation, interplay and interaction of most phonographic stages conceived of and practiced within popular music production. This is not to say that other musics do not deploy multiple methods within their production processes, or that Hip-Hop exemplifies a sole case of multi-layered—or bricolage—production. After all, many popular musics have borrowed from hip-hop practices, and the rap production paradigm can be traced outside of strict stylistic barriers 1 The terms ‘Hip-Hop’ and ‘Rap’ will be used interchangeably throughout the paper, referring to the musical genre, outputs and practices associated with hip-hop culture and art.

  • BIO Born Matthew Fowler on Feb. 17, 1975, Producer Mumbles Has Lived
BIO Born Matthew Fowler on Feb. 17, 1975, producer Mumbles has lived a life rich with musical diversity and spiritual inspiration. Raised in a family of professional jazz musicians along with older brother Marvin Fowler (Dj Marvski) of the U.N.I.T.Y. Committee, Mumbles developed an ear for jazz and hip-hop music from an early age. His father, Steve Fowler, a professional flute and sax player, along with uncles Bruce, Tom, Walt, and Ed formed a musical legacy spanning from the early 70's with the band, the Fowler Brothers. They played with Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention, Bobby McFerrin, Linda Rondstadt, Ray Charles, Diana Ross, James Taylor and Brian Setzer, to name just a few. Being raised in such a diverse and musically stimulating environment, Mumbles tuned his ear early to the complexity of rhythm, melody and harmony. With the influence of his brother Marvski, he turned his attention to hip-hop music from the age of 5 (1980) and never turned back. In the late 1980's, Marvski along with Cut Chemist, Chali 2na, and Marc 7 formed the innovative group U.N.I.T.Y. Committee, which later along with the Rebels of Rhythm turned into the group Jurassic 5. It was during these pivotal years that Mumbles, being inspired by the production and record collections of Marvksi and Cut Chemist, decided to embark on his own mission of record digging, sampling, and beat construction. What started out lightly quickly turned into the digging obsession that most hip-hop producers are familiar with.
