As Malaysia pushes for higher room rates as a reflection of its Truly Malaysia, Truly Asia hospitality, there is a need for all players – from the international chains, right down to the interesting new STEP UP boutique hotels being set up by individuals – to make sure they do all that is possible to create awareness about just how great things are in Malaysia. MALAYSIA International news reports about the state of Malaysia’s politics may scare off investors, but if the hospitality industry puts its not unimpressive might to the game, I am positive that Malaysia will be even more popular a destination than it already is. One way of doing this is to ensure that each staff is aware that he or she represents Founder/Publisher their organization, and in the bigger picture, their country. Jennifer Ong To be able to have staff that feel proud enough and responsible enough to do this, organizations need more carrot and less stick. If I may say so, the Hospitality Asia Platinum Awards (HAPA) is a really nice carrot. HAPA was the first awards event in the region based on this initiative of rewarding and recognizing the men and women from the back of the house. It’s not common for awards to honour chambermaids and concierges, but we do. I know for a fact that people from the rank and file who have been nominated for and won their specific category awards have become more passionate about what they do because they have been given that recognition. It is a small trade-off, to have to process a little more paperwork by way of nomination forms and judges’ visits, to avail someone the chance to become the fully realized individual he or she can be. I truly hope that all Malaysian hotels follow the hunger of their Southeast Asian counterparts when it comes to hospitality awards like HAPA. For a taste at how well the other nations in the region are doing, check out our travel section where you will see information presented succinctly, with visual impact. Read about how far-sighted General Managers are changing the way they manage and see what kind of culinary mastery Asia can offer. The world of Asian hospitality as it happens is reported in Hospitality Asia.
