Which Canadian Charities Had the Largest Assets in 2014?
www.canadiancharitylaw.ca Which Canadian charities had the largest assets in 2014? By Mark Blumberg (March 23, 2016) We recently reviewed the T3010 information for 2014. It covers about 84,370 of the 86,000 registered charities that have so far filed their return and that have been entered into the CRA’s database. Canadian registered charities are currently required to disclose on the T3010 their assets. The total assets of all the 84,370 registered charities were about $373,050,327,255.00. Below we have a table of Canadian charities and how much they spent as reported for the 2014 fiscal year. Thank you to Celeste Bonas, an intern at Blumbergs, for helping with this project. The Sean Blumberg Transparency Project is in memory of my youngest brother Sean Blumberg. Sean was a sweet, kind person, a great brother who helped me on a number of occasions with many tasks including the time consuming and arduous task of reviewing T3010 databases and making them into something useful. As part of the Sean Blumberg Transparency Project, Blumbergs has been releasing information on the Canadian charity sector to provide a better understanding of the size, scope, complexity and challenges of the sector. Social Science Festival Thanks Our annual Social Science Festival wrapped up last week. It was a week of varied and highly interesting and stimulating presentations (all delivered fully online/virtually, a first of its kind for the Vanier community)! The primary takeaway from the talks was that community (the festival’s theme) could potentially serve as a solidarity building tool; an instrument that can better equip us to face crises effectively and mitigate and/or reverse course on the discord, division and self- centredness that recent social phenomena seems to have contributed to (phenomena such as the Covid19 pandemic; environmental crises; the rise of populism; crises and concerns of social justice and equity faced by women, the destitute, visible minority and Indigenous groups). Have fun doing it. Doctoral thesis Title: Codoped titanium dioxide thin-films for visible light fueled applications: fabrication, characterization, and optimization. Supervisor: Prof. My Ali El Khakani (INRS-EMT) Abstract: Radio-frequency magnetron sputtering was used to synthesize visible-light active nanoscale TiO2:N films. This introduction of NO species formed new VBM-straddling Eg states, lowering the effective optical-gap from 3.2 eV to values as low as 2.2 eV, while maintaining desired crystallinity. Un- fortunately, VO-defect density was seen to increase as a result of this, leading to decreased photocharge lifetimes. To remedy this, an acceptor-donor charge passivated TiO2:WN were developed and synthe- sized. The optimized codoped films were shown to have increased VO formation energies, improved photocharge lifetimes, and decreased lattice strain. The improvement of these properties directly re- sulted in TiO2:WN photoanodes showing a ∼300 % increase in 1.5AM-light driven electro-photocatalytic degradation rates of real-life pollutants when compared to pristene TiO2. A more focused examination of early childhood education was undertaken. Through the exploration of knowledge, attitudes and perceptions held by high school and college advisors this study was intending to identify the kind of information presented to parents and students as they considered post-secondary options. Despite considerable research in the area of early child development, and the positive implications of high quality education on learning, the profession of early childhood education continues to suffer from an image problem.

2018 ANNUAL REPORT It was a milestone year for the international education sector. This year Canada achieved its goal of Message from the welcoming 450,000 international students…five years ahead of schedule. Interim President At the end of December there were 494,525 international students in Canada. This number representing all levels of Canadian education clearly demonstrates the continuing attractiveness of Canada as a study and CEO destination and the strong focus of our member institutions across the country on supporting international students effectively. Canada now holds the fourth highest spot as receiver of post-secondary international students after the United States, United Kingdom and China, surpassing Australia and France. Our own organization has had a part to play in welcoming these students to Canada. In June, the Canadian Francophonie Scholarship Program (CFSP) celebrated thirty years of success in capacity building and the management of nearly 2,500 scholars from 37 beneficiary countries of La Francophonie. This scholarship program is entirely funded by the Government of Canada which has entrusted the management of the program to the Canadian Bureau for International Education (CBIE) in partnership with World University Service of Canada. A survey conducted by CFSP in 2016 found that 90% of students recognized the quality of the training in Canada and 80% of home institutions recognized the capacity building effect of the program. That same month we launched a project with the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) to strengthen the qualifications and capacity of Filipino higher education institutions. In July CBIE delivered a comprehen- sive training program in internationalization to senior leaders from universities in the Philippines.
