10:00 - 12:00pm Keynote Presentation: Usha James

Designing courses and assessments to maximize engagement and deepen learning

How do we motivate students to engage meaningfully with each other and with the course content in the context of remote learning? This interactive session will explore powerful but feasible ways to tweak course structures and assessment methods to increase student engagement and deepen learning.

You may wish to keep your course outlines and assessments handy as there will be opportunities to adapt ideas and integrate them into your planning.

About our keynote speaker

Usha James spent 12 years as a secondary teacher and five years seconded to OISE at the University of Toronto, as an instructor in the Initial Teacher Education Program and Director of the Secondary Program. She has co-authored textbooks, teachers’ resources, course profiles and ministry documents with the aim of providing practical strategies for teachers seeking to refine their practice. Usha has contributed to The Critical Thinking Consortium for many years as a resource writer and reviewer and as a speaker and facilitator. Usha has worked with teachers of kindergarten to post- secondary students, supporting their efforts to improve the quality of their students’ thinking. She has seen how an understanding of critical thinking can deepen teacher understanding and practice of assessment, instruction, curriculum design, literacy, numeracy and differentiation. Recently, Usha has also worked extensively with principals and superintendents particularly with the aim of helping them support teachers shifting towards a critical thinking pedagogy.

9 Intercollegiate Ped Days Planning Committee Proud to work together and with valiant teachers across the network!

A message from the Planning Committee:

We are fiercely proud and in awe of the amazing dedication and perseverance of the teachers in our respective colleges, especially during this unique time of teaching remotely during a pandemic. We celebrate you for your extraordinary passion for teaching and your tireless efforts in continuously developing and reinventing your instructional practices to provide the very best learning experience for your students.

One amazing outcome of this transition to remote teaching and working is that it has brought us together and made it possible for us to envision a common virtual space where we can share resources, ideas, stories, and more with our colleagues from across the English-language Cegep network. It has been a great pleasure to work together as pedagogical counsellors to create this first-ever intercollegiate event to support the continued pedagogical development of our teachers. We hope this event will become an annual tradition for years to come!
