Edison and the Lumière brothers worked assiduously to find a way to preserve and reproduce sound and images. The numerous inventions conceived in this period such as the Kinetophone, the Vitascope and the Cinematograph are testament to this and are nowadays consid- ered the forerunners of cinema. Most of these new technologies were presented at public screenings which generated a high level of interest. They attracted people from all social classes, who packed out the halls, theatres and hotels where they were held. This paper presents a review of the newspa- per and magazine articles published in Spain at the turn of the century in order to study the social reception of the first film equip- ment in the country, as well as to understand the role of music in relation to the images at these events and how the first film systems dealt with sound. In this ground-breaking book, Derek B. Scott examines the cultural transfer of operetta from the German stage to Britain and the USA and offers a historical and critical survey of these operettas and their music. In the period 1900–1940, over sixty operettas were produced in the West End, and over seventy on Broadway. A study of these stage works is important for the light they shine on a variety of social topics of the period – from modernity and gender relations to new technology and new media – and these are investigated in the individual chapters. Wilson, PhD University of Pittsburgh, 2015 During the mid-1950s to the early 1970s a subversive cinema, known as the Japanese New Wave, arose in Japan. This dissertation challenges critical trends that use French New Wave cinema and the oeuvre of Oshima Nagisa as templates to construct Japanese New Wave cinema as largely male-centered and avant-garde in its formal aesthetics. I argue instead for the centrality of the erotic woman to a questioning of national and postwar identity in Japan, and for the importance of popular cinema to an understanding of this New Wave movement. In short, this study aims to break new ground in Japanese New Wave scholarship by focusing on issues of gender and popular aesthetics.

JULY 2. 1994 Washington, D.C. -- Grand Music Cinema II: 1920-1928, a series of five silent films with historically authentic live music accompaniment, will be featured free of charge in July on Saturdays at 3:00 p.m. in the National Gallery of Art's East Building auditorium. This second summer series of classic silent films includes three Washington premieres of original scores and three films with ten-piece orchestral accompaniment. Music for all films again this year is under the direction of Gillian Anderson, music specialist for the Library of Congress. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. Free same-day passes will be available at the auditorium entrance beginning at noon, with a limit of four per person. The series is made possible by The Circle of the National Gallery of Art. New and talented young producers such as Bert Schneider took great advantage of the new opportu- nities this system offered. Orson Welles, still self-exiled in Europe, himself wanted to take advantage ofthe changed climate in Hollywood. Thanks to the support of his new partner, Oja Kodar, Orson Welles decided that his films would explore sexuality in a more explicit way. Nudity, corporeity, and sex (though already appearing in his previous films) are copiously dealt with in The Other Side of the Wind, whose initial con- ception and realization was largely due to Oja Kodar. One of the film’s most iconic sequences, the “car sex scene”, features well-known Wellesian techniques as applied to the depiction of dominant female sexuality.
