O’Connell 21.1 Introduction Chemical defense has evolved multiple times in nearly every major group of life, from snakes and insects to bacteria and plants (Mebs 2002 ). However, among land vertebrates, chemical defenses are restricted to a few monophyletic groups (i.e., clades). Most of these are amphibians and snakes, but a few rare origins (e.g., Pitohui birds) have stimulated research on acquired chemical defenses (Dumbacher et al. 1992 ). Selective pressures that lead to defense are usually associated with an organ- ism’s limited ability to escape predation or conspicuous behaviors and phenotypes that increase detectability by predators (e.g., diurnality or mating calls) (Speed and Ruxton 2005 ). Defended organisms frequently evolve warning signals to advertise their defense, a phenomenon known as aposematism (Mappes et al. 2005 ). Warning signals such as conspicuous coloration unambiguously inform predators that there will be a substantial cost if they proceed with attack or consumption of the defended prey (Mappes et al. 2005 ). However, aposematism is likely more complex than the simple pairing of signal and defense, encompassing a series of traits (i.e., the apose- matic syndrome) that alter morphology, physiology, and behavior (Mappes and J. Each 10 ml pre-filled syringe contains 100 mg of suxamethonium chloride anhydrous (as 110 mg of suxamethonium chloride dihydrate). Excipient with known effect: Each ml of solution for injection contains 2.79 mg equivalent to 0.12 mmol of sodium. Each 10 ml pre-filled syringe contains 27.9 mg equivalent to 1.2 mmol of sodium. For the full list of excipients, see section 6.1. 3 PHARMACEUTICAL FORM Solution for injection (injection). Clear and colourless solution. pH: 3.0 – 4.5 Osmolality: 250-350 mOsm/Kg 4 CLINICAL PARTICULARS 4.1 Therapeutic Indications Murexal is indicated as a muscle relaxant to facilitate endotracheal intubation during induction of general anaesthesia or emergency situations, in adults and paediatric population above 12 years of age. 4.2 Posology and method of administration Suxamethonium should be administered only by or under close supervision of an experienced clinician (anaesthesist, intensivist, emergency physician) familiar with its action, characteristics and hazards, who is skilled in the management of intubation and artificial respiration and only where there are adequate facilities for immediate endotracheal intubation with administration of oxygen by intermittent positive pressure ventilation. It is given intravenously after anaesthesia has been induced and should not be administered to the conscious patient. Posology Adults To achieve endotracheal intubation, suxamethonium chloride is usually administered by bolus intravenous injection in a dose of 1 mg/kg body weight. -

Mayor, Mythic Bio-Techne, 1 Mythic Bio-Techne in Classical Antiquity: Desire, Hope, and Dread Adrienne Mayor Biotechnique Exhibit Catalog, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, 2007 The apprehension and exuberance (rational or otherwise) evoked by obscuring the lines between the natural and unnatural, art and science, life and death, might seem to be new constellations of human emotions called into being by uniquely modern biotechnological advances. Concepts of replicating, amplifying, and creating life itself— and the ambivalence that surrounds such issues—have very ancient roots, and were explored in Greek mythology and art, thousands of years before the advent of modern science. Ancient narratives about artificial life, surpassing human limits, and controlling potentially dangerous biotechnologies feature familiar legendary figures: Hercules, Medea, Daedalus, Pandora. Classical stories describing what the ancient Greeks might have termed bio- techne (bios, life, crafted through the art of science, techne) eerily foreshadow the ways that contemporary feelings of optimism about modern biotechnology vie with a sense of dread. In classical antiquity, as in modernity, cultural dreams and nightmares about bio-techne Mayor, Mythic Bio-Techne, 2 inspired artistic endeavors. Artisans created hybrid mythological life- forms for public display. Bio-techne myths led playwrights like Euripides and Sophocles to produce haunting dramatic performances, and artists illustrated the stories in vase paintings and sculpture. These classical artifacts continue to have powerful impacts on modern audiences. The stories discussed in this essay help to place the seemingly modern idea of manipulating life within early mytho-historic traditions. The examples I’ve selected fall into four, often overlapping categories. -

Brunetti3,4 and Chiara Carazzone1* Abstract Background: Poison frogs are known for the outstanding diversity of alkaloid-based chemical defences with promising therapeutic applications. However, current knowledge about chemical defences in Dendrobatoidea superfamily has two sources of bias. First, cryptic, brown-colored species have been neglected in comparison to those conspicuously colored, and second, there has been little interest in characterizing metabolites other than alkaloids mediating defensive functions. In an effort to contribute to fill the gap of knowledge about cryptic species and broadening the spectrum of compounds analyzed we have applied head-space solid phase microextraction coupled to gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (HS-SPME/GC-MS) for extracting amphibian alkaloids and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from Silverstoneia punctiventris. Results: Using the skin from 8 specimens in 4 biological replicates we have found 33 different compounds. Twenty of them were classified as VOCs into 15 chemical classes including alkanes, alcohols, carbonyl compounds, methylpyridines, benzothiazoles, N-alkylpyrrolidines, pyrazines, and sesquiterpenoids, some of which were previously reported as repellents, defence compounds or defence pheromones in other organisms, and as sex pheromones in a treefrog. Interestingly, six of the remaining compounds were identified as alkaloids previously reported in other toxic/unpalatable dendrobatid frogs. Conclusions: This is the first report of alkaloids and VOCs found in the Silverstoneia genus, which has been assumed for decades as non-chemically defended. -

Great economic loss is caused by improper and inadequate surgery, and through lack of education, the cooperation of the patient is not all one would like it to be. Vitreous prolapse occurs in 7 to 9 per cent. of routinely-sedated patients, and iris prolapse in about 4 per cent., where a peripheral iridectomy has been done and a stitch applied. The visual results are often poor and ophthalmic surgeons tend to lay the blame on the patient. With all the means at our disposal to-day, however, this is rather unfair, and we have managed to obtain better relaxation by operating under curare akinesia. We have been fortunate in not meeting many complications (Agarwal and Mathur, 1952; Agarwal, 1953), but the use of curare alone in the doses usually given is not without risk, nor does it eliminate post-opera- tive hazards. Chlorpromazine (Agarwal, Gupta, and Malik, 1957) has also given encouraging results when used for sedation, and both drugs lowered the intra-ocular pressure to safe limits even when it was high initially.
