Due to other responsibilities in academic management in the ensuing four years, the book has been longer in gestation than initially planned. Furthermore, its completion and publication have been supported by the hera Cultural Encounters Joint Research Project Travelling Texts 1790–1914, the Transnational Reception of Women’s Writing at the Fringes of Europe, 2013–16. Investigating translations and other forms of reception of female writers in three time windows of the nineteenth century, the first of them Jane Austen’s time, this project provided me with a context for the present case study. As Principal Investigator for Norway, I unearthed and documented a vast body of female writing, reading, translation and criticism, which helped support the conclusions drawn here. This larger material on the import of European women’s writing in Norway will be the subject of a forthcoming monograph. In the earliest phase of writing the present book, I had the great benefit of working for five weeks at Chawton House Library in Hampshire, England, as a Visiting Fellow in February–March 2009. Its Jane Austen connections, as well as friendly staff and unique ambience made it a very memorable experience. The last chapters were written when I enjoyed the hospitality of the Uni- versity of Cambridge, as a Visiting Scholar in the Lent Term of 2016. I am very grateful for the kind reception I had there. I would also like to thank my own institution, Volda University College in Norway, for providing me with a mean- ingful academic life for over twenty-five years. The very first seeds of this book were sown when I was asked to write the Norwegian chapter of The Reception of Jane Austen in Europe, eds Brian South- am and Anthony Mandal, first published in 2007. In the course of this process, translation was confirmed to be the most important, and most challenging, form of reception. An array of pertinent issues presented themselves, and a host of samples that illuminated them, most of which could not find room within a single chapter. It resulted in a conviction that the Norwegian-language Jane Austen should be made available for a worldwide Austen scholarship. The final manuscript has benefited much from the expert advice of my copy editor at Brill, Cedric Barfoot. Such a purist sentiment is all well and good, and quite understandable. Perhaps there is something untranslatable about all great authors; nuances that can only be found in their own language.2 But Jane Austen will not stay at home. She has been travelling to other countries, speaking foreign languages, since her books started to come out. She has spoken French since 1813, German since 1822, Swedish since 1836, Por- tuguese since 1847, Danish since 1855 and Norwegian since 1871.3 She crossed the Atlantic to Brazil (the 1847 translation) and in American English editions in 1816 and 1832–33 (the latter comprised all six novels).4 Right after the First World War, she learnt to speak Spanish (1919), Dutch and Finnish (1922). She crossed the world in the opposite direction and learnt foreign sign systems in Japan (1926)5 and China (1935).6 She travelled to Eastern Europe, and spoke Serbo-Croat (1929) and Czech (1932), Hungarian and Polish (1934). At the same time, she spoke Italian (1932). The years of the Second World War saw an explosion of interest in Austen’s authorship, with thirty-two European translations between 1941 and 1945, the majority of them into the Romance languages – Portuguese, Spanish and Italian. Turkey presents a similar case, with five of the novels translated between 1946 and 1972.8 Since the war, not a year has gone by without seeing several new Austen translations. While there are (so far) no recorded translations between 1898 and 1910, and only three in the first two decades of the twentieth century, she is now among the most translated of British authors.

And I found, so much fun had the exercise become, that I was reluctant to say to myself, no more. Understandably, I’ve been dependent on other people’s memories and record- keeping and have learnt that even the weightiest of tomes do not always agree on such basic ‘facts’ as people’s birthdays.     The Buckingham Journal of Language and Linguistics 2018 Volume 10 pp 96-107 THE LINGUISTIC REGISTER OF BRITISH PREPARATORY SCHOOLS IN ANTHONY BUCKERIDGE’S JENNINGS GOES TO SCHOOL Graeme Davis The unique language employed in many British Public Schools has long been noted; that of the Preparatory Schools from which the Public Schools mostly draw their pupils has generally been neglected.1 Public School English is a feature of such popular sources as the novel Tom Brown’s Schooldays (1857) and has had formal analysis at least since 1900, the year of publication of Farmer’s Public School Word Book. By contrast, there are far fewer sources for the language of the Preparatory Schools. In Jennings Goes to School, novelist Anthony Buckeridge provides a surprisingly rich overview of this English linguistic Register as it was in the late 1940s. The Jennings Register is explored here through a Jennings word-list as an appendix to this article, and through discussion within this article of the Register in action. The Jennings Register looks in two directions. It is the primary source of Public School English and therefore of the dialect of British English associated with the Upper and Upper-Middle Classes. However, the Jennings Register surprises in that its sources are primarily Working Class and from popular culture, and in this respect it is a dialect of the Working Class. Preparatory School English therefore appears to provide a bridge between various class- based dialects of British English. It may be regarded as a linguistic and cultural unifier for Britain in the twentieth century.

After a troubled childhood and adolescence, during which he was expelled from two schools and spent three months in prison for credit card fraud, he secured a place at Queens' College, Cambridge, where he studied English literature. While at university, Fry became involved with the Cambridge Footlights, where he met his long­time collaborator Hugh Laurie. As half of the comic double act Fry and Laurie, he co­ wrote and co­starred in A Bit of Fry & Laurie, and took the role of Jeeves (with Laurie playing Wooster) Fry in Happy Birthday to GNU (2008) in Jeeves and Wooster. Born Stephen John Fry 24 August 1957 [1] Fry's acting roles include a Golden Globe Award– nominated lead performance in the film Wilde, Hampstead, London, United Melchett in the BBC television series Blackadder, the Kingdom title character in the television series Kingdom, a Nationality English recurring guest role as Dr. Gordon Wyatt on the crime Education The College of West Anglia series Bones, and as Gordon Deitrich in the dystopian thriller V for Vendetta.
