Une (pré)histoire où la sensibilité s’exprime avec des représentations, des couleurs, des images dessinées à même les parois brutes et qui s’animent sous la lumière dansante d’une flamme. L’image animée est un émerveillement pour l’être 1 2 3 humain : la lanterne magique, cette cassette des illusions inventée au XVIIe siècle, fascinait le public ; les « flipbooks » ou folioscopes nés à la fin du XIXe siècle, qui s’animent à partir d’une série d’images feuilletées rapidement et qui oscillent entre livre et cinéma, sont connus de tous. Aujourd’hui, le cinéma d’animation propose une expérience privilégiée pour explorer des mondes fantaisistes, ludiques ou imaginaires. Son langage offre des espaces que le récit traditionnel ne peut explorer. Il visite de nouveaux concepts esthétiques en exploitant différents phénomènes : les métamorphoses, les effets spéciaux et les créations non narratives qui expérimentent le mouvement, le langage plastique et le langage symbolique. La France est un pays reconnu pour l’animation ; le poids économique de ce secteur ainsi que le marché français font partie des plus dynamiques au monde. Les écoles d’animation se sont développées et constituent aujourd’hui un réseau d’excellence. La Nouvelle-Aquitaine, pour sa part, 4 5 6 7 a fait de l’économie numérique une priorité. Elle compte sur son territoire le pôle Magelis et la Cité de la BD, des maisons d’édition numérique et des sociétés de production de cinéma d’animation. Féru d’animation japonaise, l’Hexagone est aussi le « deuxième pays du manga », comme nous l’expose Bruno Pham, ce qui explique l’implantation récente d’une école de manga japonaise à Angoulême. Xavier Kawa-Topor, délégué général de NEF Animation, retrace, pour Éclairages, cette histoire où les talents venant de la bande dessinée ou du multimédia se sont emparés de l’animation, alors que le livre animé numérique est parti à la conquête du mouvement et sollicite différemment le lecteur, écrit Gaëlle Pelachaud, et enfin que les plus jeunes circulent sans complexe entre papier et numérique, nous raconte Sylvie Vassalo, à l’origine du projet européen « Transbook ».     TEN YEARS SUPPORTING, DELIVERING & PROMOTING THE WHOLE SPECTRUM OF ANIMATION Directors Message Wow – we made it to our 10th anniversary!! Who would have thought it? From very humble beginnings – our first festival in 2004 screened at the now-defunct Rupert Street Cinema in Piccadilly – to LIAF 2013, 10 days at 3 different venues. We have survived - sort of. Over 10 years we’ve received more than 12,000 entries, screened more than 2,500 films, and had some of the most talented animators in the world come and hang out with us. And we’ve had a ball on the way. It’s time to blow our own trumpet. As well as being the largest festival of it’s kind in the UK in terms of films and programmes screened, we have a substantial touring component and we run satellite events all year-round. We’ve screened at festivals, cinemas, theatres and colleges all around the world and in the UK and hopefully we have spread the word that animation is a valid artform that is only limited by the animator’s imagination. In short, our maxim is that in animation anything can happen. Long may this be. There are far too may people to thank here (hopefully you know who you are) but the guidance and immense work-rate of my co-Director Malcolm Turner has to be acknowledged. Way back when in our ground zero - actually in the year 1999 - I still vividly recall that very first meeting Malcolm and I had with our then-colleague Susi Allender in the back garden of our Melbourne flat.

The festival begins in Cardiff at Chapter Arts on the evening of Friday, September 29th with a screening of Masaaki Yuasa’s film The Night is Short, Walk on Girl (2017), a charming romantic romp featuring a love-sick student chasing a girl through the streets of Kyoto, encountering magic and weird situations as he does so. Festival head, Eiko Ishii Meredith will be on hand to host the opening ceremony and a party to celebrate the start of the festival which will last until October 01st and include a diverse array of films from near-future tales Napping Princess (2017) to the internationally famous mega-hit Your Name (2016). The Cardiff portion of the festival ends with a screening of another Yuasa film, the much-requested Mind Game (2004), a film definitely sure to please fans of surreal and adventurous animation.
