  • Ryan King-White Dissertation
ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: BASEBALL, CITIZENSHIP, AND NATIONAL IDENTITY IN GEORGE W. BUSH’S AMERICA Ryan Edward King‐White, Doctor of Philosophy, 2008 Dissertation directed by: Professor David L. Andrews Department of Kinesiology The four separate, but related, studies within this research project seek to offer a critical understanding for how American national identit(ies), and particular forms of (cultural) citizenship are discursively constructed and performed in and through the sport of baseball. More specifically, this dissertation will utilize and expand upon critical theories of neoliberalism, citizenship, whiteness, and (physical) cultural studies to engage various empirical sites, which help provide the context for everyday life in contemporary America. Each chapter looks at various empirical aspects of the Little League World Series and the fans of the Boston Red Sox (popularly referred to as Red Sox Nation) that have historically privileged particular performances and behaviors often associated with white, American, heterosexual, upper‐middle class, masculine subject‐positions. In the first instance this project also attempts to describe how ‘normalized’ American citizenship is being (re)shaped in and through the sport of baseball. Secondly, I aim to critically evaluate claims made by both Little League Baseball, and the Boston Red Sox organization, in response to (popular) criticisms (Bryant, 20002; Mosher, 2001a, 2001b, 2001c) of regressive activity and behavior historically related to their organizations, that they

  • Targeted Sampling from Massive Block Model Graphs with Personalized Pagerank∗
Targeted sampling from massive block model graphs with personalized PageRank∗ Fan Chen1, Yini Zhang2, and Karl Rohe1 1Department of Statistics 2School of Journalism and Mass Communication University of Wisconsin, Madison, WI 53706, USA Abstract This paper provides statistical theory and intuition for Personalized PageRank (PPR), a popular technique that samples a small community from a massive network. We study a setting where the entire network is expensive to thoroughly obtain or maintain, but we can start from a seed node of interest and \crawl" the network to find other nodes through their connections. By crawling the graph in a designed way, the PPR vector can be approximated without querying the entire massive graph, making it an alternative to snowball sampling. Using the degree-corrected stochastic block model, we study whether the PPR vector can select nodes that belong to the same block as the seed node. We provide a simple and interpretable form for the PPR vector, highlighting its biases towards high degree nodes outside of the target block. We examine a simple adjustment based on node degrees and establish consistency results for PPR clustering that allows for directed graphs. These results are enabled by recent technical advances showing the element-wise convergence of eigenvectors. We illustrate the method with the massive Twitter friendship graph, which we crawl using the Twitter API. We find that (i) the adjusted and unadjusted PPR techniques are complementary approaches, where the adjustment makes the results particularly localized around the seed node and (ii) the bias adjustment greatly benefits from degree regularization. Keywords Community detection; Degree-corrected stochastic block model; Local clustering; Network sampling; Personalized PageRank arXiv:1910.12937v2 [cs.SI] 1 Jul 2020 1 Introduction Much of the literature on graph sampling has treated the entire graph, or all of the people in it, as the target population.

  • RCED-99-136 Telecommunications: Impact of Sports Programming
United States General Accounting Office Report to the GAO Byron L. Dorgan,Honorable U. S. Senate June 1999 TELECOMMUNICATIONS Impact of Sports Programming Costs on Cable Television Rates |~Accountabllity * Integrity * Reliability GAO/RCED-99-136 United States General Accounting Office Washington, D.C. 20548 Resources, Community, and Economic Development Division B-280705 June 22, 1999 The Honorable Byron L. Dorgan United States Senate Dear Senator Dorgan: The rates that subscribers pay to receive cable television in the United States have increased at several times the general rate of inflation over the last few years. Cable operators have attributed these increases to inflation; programming costs; system upgrades, including increases in the number of channels; and other factors. However, some cable operators have attributed increases to the cost of acquiring sports programming, in particular. In terms of viewership, sports programming is among the highest-rated programming on cable television. This report responds to your request that we provide information on the role that sports programming played in recent increases in cable rates. Specifically, you asked us to provide information on (1) the extent to which sports programming costs are contributing to higher cable television rates; (2) how prices paid for sports programming differ for small and large cable operators; (3) the extent to which sports programmers require cable operators to bundle (i.e., combine) sports programming with other cable programming and how this practice affects cable rates; and (4) whether the salaries of players in major professional sports have risen over the last 4 years, and if so, whether this has contributed to increases in cable rates.
