The Development of Early Imperial Dress from the Tetrarchs to the Herakleian Dynasty General Introduction The emperor, as head of state, was the most important and powerful individual in the land; his official portraits and to a lesser extent those of the empress were depicted throughout the realm. His image occurred most frequently on small items issued by government officials such as coins, market weights, seals, imperial standards, medallions displayed beside new consuls, and even on the inkwells of public officials. As a sign of their loyalty, his portrait sometimes appeared on the patches sown on his supporters’ garments, embossed on their shields and armour or even embellishing their jewelry. Among more expensive forms of art, the emperor’s portrait appeared in illuminated manuscripts, mosaics, and wall paintings such as murals and donor portraits. Several types of statues bore his likeness, including those worshiped as part of the imperial cult, examples erected by public 1 officials, and individual or family groupings placed in buildings, gardens and even harbours at the emperor’s personal expense. -

Titus, who had the same cognomen with his father, was the darling and delight of mankind; so much did the natural genius, address, or good fortune he possessed tend to conciliate the favour of all. This was, indeed, extremely difficult, after he became emperor, as before that time, and even during the reign of his father, he lay under public odium and censure. He was born upon the third of the calends of January, [30th Dec.] in the year remarkable for the death of Caius [776], near the Septizonium [777], in a mean house, and a very small and dark room, which still exists, and is shown to the curious. II. He was educated in the palace with Britannicus, and instructed in the same branches of learning, and under the same masters. During this time, they say, that a physiognomist being introduced by Narcissus, the freedman of Claudius, to examine the features of Britannicus [778], positively affirmed that he would never become emperor, but that Titus, who stood by, would. They were so familiar, that Titus being next him at table, is thought to have tasted of the fatal potion which put an end to Britannicus's life, and to have contracted from it a distemper which hung about him a long time. In remembrance of all these circumstances, he afterwards erected a golden statue of him in the Palatium, and dedicated to him an equestrian statue of ivory; attending it in the Circensian procession, in which it is still carried to this day. -

A Dissertation submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School, Marquette University, in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Milwaukee, Wisconsin May 2011 ABSTRACT THE TRINITARIAN THEOLOGY OF IRENAEUS OF LYONS Jackson Lashier, B.A., M.Div. Marquette University, 2011 This dissertation is a study of the Trinitarian theology of Irenaeus of Lyons. With the exception of two recent studies, Irenaeus’ Trinitarian theology, particularly in its immanent manifestation, has been devalued by scholarship due to his early dates and his stated purpose of avoiding speculative theology. In contrast to this majority opinion, I argue that Irenaeus’ works show a mature understanding of the Trinity, in both its immanent and economic manifestations, which is occasioned by Valentinianism. Moreover, his Trinitarian theology represents a significant advancement upon that of his sources, the so-called apologists, whose understanding of the divine nature converges in many respects with Valentinian theology. I display this advancement by comparing the thought of Irenaeus with that of Justin, Athenagoras, and Theophilus, on Trinitarian themes. Irenaeus develops Trinitarian theology in the following ways. First, he defines God’s nature as spirit, thus maintaining the divine transcendence through God’s higher order of being as opposed to the use of spatial imagery (God is separated/far away from creation). -

But success has been less frequent, because the knowledge of coins is essentially a knowledge of details, and small treatises are apt to be un- readable when they contain too many references to particular coins, and unprofltably vague when such references are avoided. I cannot hope that I have passed safely between these two dangers ; indeed, my desire has been to avoid the second at all risk of encountering the former. At the same time it may be said that this book is not meant for the collector who desires only to identify the coins which he happens to possess, while caring little for the wider problems of history, art, mythology, and religion, to which coins sometimes furnish the only key. -

Imperial Letters in Latin: Pliny and Trajan, Egnatius Taurinus and Hadrian1 Fergus Millar 1. Introduction No-one will deny the fundamental importance of the correspondence of Pliny, as legatus of Pontus and Bithynia, and Trajan for our understanding of the Empire as a system. The fact that at each stage the correspondence was initiated by Pliny; the distances travelled by messengers in either direction (as the crow flies, some 2000 km to Rome from the furthest point in Pontus, and 1,500 km from Bithynia);2 the consequent delays, of something like two months in either direction; the seemingly minor and localised character of many of the questions raised by Pliny, and the Emperor’s care and patience in answering them – all these can be seen as striking and revealing, and indeed surprising, as routine aspects of the government of an Empire of perhaps some 50 million people. On the other hand this absorbing exchange of letters can be puzzling, because it seems isolated, not easy to fit into any wider context, since examples of Imperial letters in Latin are relatively rare. By contrast, the prestige of the Greek City in the Roman Empire and the flourishing of the epigraphic habit in at least some parts of the Greek world (primarily, however, the Greek peninsula and the western and southern areas of Asia Minor) have produced a large and ever-growing crop of letters addressed by Emperors to Greek cities and koina, and written in Greek. The collection of Greek constitutions published by J.H. Oliver in 1989 could now be greatly increased. -

Venus in the Mirror: Roman Matrons in the Guise of a Goddess, the Reception for the Aphrodite of Cnidus Sadie Pickup, London The afterlife or reception of ancient sculpture offers a plethora of opportunities to discuss the continuance of images through ages and cultures. Aby Warburg’s work on the “survival of antiquity” and the ever expanding literature surrounding this topic indicates its potential fruitfulness.1 Few sculptures from antiquity resonate with Warburg’s idea: Nachleben der Antike (the afterlife of the antique), more than the Aphrodite of Cnidus (Knidia) (fig. 1). A work by Praxiteles from the fourth century BC, often considered the first life-size female nude in western art.2 The goddess draws her right hand across her groin, holding drapery in her left over a vessel.3 Sculptural copies and repli- cas in various media enable reconstruction, the work destroyed by fire in the fifth century AD when in Constantinople. Coins are an additional resource for identification and can be labelled.4 Three features are largely consistent: Aphrodite’s nudity, her gesture covering her groin with her right hand, and her pose, with weight resting on one leg, often her right. In most, she is also accompanied by a vessel, varying in nature.5 1 Warburg 1999.
