    Childbearing in Japanese Society: Traditional Beliefs and Contemporary Practices by Gunnella Thorgeirsdottir A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy The University of Sheffield Faculty of Social Sciences School of East Asian Studies August 2014 ii iii iv Abstract In recent years there has been an oft-held assumption as to the decline of traditions as well as folk belief amidst the technological modern age. The current thesis seeks to bring to light the various rituals, traditions and beliefs surrounding pregnancy in Japanese society, arguing that, although changed, they are still very much alive and a large part of the pregnancy experience. Current perception and ideas were gathered through a series of in depth interviews with 31 Japanese females of varying ages and socio-cultural backgrounds. These current perceptions were then compared to and contrasted with historical data of a folkloristic nature, seeking to highlight developments and seek out continuities. This was done within the theoretical framework of the liminal nature of that which is betwixt and between as set forth by Victor Turner, as well as theories set forth by Mary Douglas and her ideas of the polluting element of the liminal.     History of Akita Castle KUMAGAI Kimio Akita Castle is a josaku (government fortification) located in the northernmost domains of Japan and among the ancient josaku it is unique and of great interest in terms of significant changes to its historical background. This paper traces the history of Akita Castle, from the formation of Akita district through to the Gangyo War and clarifies its distinctive characteristics. The foundation of Akita Castle originated with the creation of Dewa no Ki (a government fortifica- tion in the Dewa area), which was moved out of Ideha County and relocated to Akita Village in 733. Akita Dewa no Ki was positioned as a controlling stronghold in the northern districts governed in accordance with the ritsuryo codes; however, unlike regular josaku, its control of its domains was weak. Subsequently, due to a period of reorganization of josaku by the Nakamaro administration, Monou Castle and Okachi Castle were constructed, and at this time Dewa no Ki was renamed Akita Castle, and connected with Mutsu Province by a route on the post-station system, alleviating its isolated location to some degree. However, later, reinforcement of territorial control brought conflict with the natives of Ezo or the northerners, so it became difficult to defend, and in 770 the Dewa Province requested the closure of Akita Castle. S a d l e r Sarah Lawrence College 1 FOLKDANCE Doing bon odori at festival time is，for the Japanese, the most natural thing in the world. Festival time is a happy time, and when people are really happy they want to dance. And bon odori is the national folkdance of Japan. It is a genre of true folkdance, a dance that all the people can do. And if you d o n ，t know the steps or the gestures，you join the circle anyway, and learn as you go. That much needs to be said before we talk about the “Buddhist” origin of the dance，and its “Buddhist” meaning. Bon odori, or Bon dance, is so named because of its association in the popular mind with the Buddhist festival of O-Bon. There is in Japan a happy division of labor between religions: Shinto shrines are concerned with whisking away corruption and impurity, and preserving life in all its vigor; Buddhist temples are concerned with funerary custom, and related spiritual matters. O-Bon，the one national festival with strong­ ly Buddhistic undertones，is sometimes called the festival of the dead. It has also been called the Japanese All Souls5 Day. Geoffrey Bownas ob­ serves that, like all Japanese festivals, it has three sequential elements:1 ) the welcoming of a returning spirit，2) joint entertainment，and 3) the escorted departure of the spirit.1 Bon odori is simply the entertain­ ment offered by the people for the spirit，and, pari passu，for themselves, at the Bon festival.
