Simon David Breden 2 Abstract The rehearsal processes of theatre companies are an oft-neglected area of research in Drama and Performance Studies. My study of the Catalan devising collective Els Joglars and the Madrid producing venue Teatro de la Abadía seeks to redress the balance with a close analysis of methodologies employed in rehearsal. In both cases I have witnessed rehearsals first-hand; with Els Joglars observing preparations for En un lugar de Manhattan (2005); in the case of the Abadía working as assistant director on El burlador de Sevilla (2008). These observations are fundamental to a thesis where I have sought to place both companies in a local, national and international context. The thesis examines Els Joglars’ roots in mime and how they have generated a practice-based methodology by means of a hands-on exploration of ideas derived from practitioners as varied as Etienne Decroux and Peter Brook. With Teatro de la Abadía, the focus shifts to how the founder and Artistic Director José Luis Gómez developed exercises drawn from European practitioners such as Jacques Lecoq and Michael Chekhov in order to create his own actor-training centre in Madrid. In effect, both companies have created distinctive rehearsal processes by applying ideas and techniques from a wider European context to a Spanish theatre scene which had been seen to follow rather than develop trends and techniques visible in theatre across France, Italy and Germany. Critically, their hybrid rehearsal processes generate heightened theatrical results for the audience. This could be described as an experiential engagement, where the creative process has been consciously geared towards placing the audience in a ‘distinct situation’ and requiring them to respond accordingly. Then pile the words on top. And watch them seep down. Will Eno, Thom Pain (Based on Nothing) (Eno, 2004: 35-36) i. A Methodology for Rehearsal There is a fundamental dichotomy between the nature of perception and the words with which we clumsily attempt to define those same perceptions – a dichotomy at the core of all art and one which is aptly recognised in the above excerpt from Will Eno’s 2004 monologue Thom Pain (Based on Nothing). Effectively, we do not have the capacity to do justice to our experiences by recounting them verbally, and as a result, we encounter difficulties when trying to define any emotional experience. However, describing emotive involvement lies at the heart of the analysis of theatre. That some of these theatrical experiences should remain in our memories long after others have faded away is not simply a matter of personal taste, but undoubtedly an indication of how physically and mentally involved we felt at the time as spectators. Speaking of Spanish theatre in particular, a chasm separates the violent promenade excesses of La Fura dels Baus and the placid proscenium texts of Alejandro Casona or Enrique Jardiel Poncela. This chasm is not necessarily just an artistic one, although clearly the concerns of all artists differ wildly. In terms of the audience experience, however, the key to the differences resides in how these artists choose to communicate and what sensations they choose to stimulate. This is a problem of definition that has always faced academics and theatre 9 practitioners: ‘we find in language the notion of sensation, which seems immediate and obvious: I have a sensation of redness, of blueness, of hot or cold. It will, however, be seen that nothing could in fact be more confused’ (Merleau-Ponty, 2007: 3). Many strategies have been employed in an attempt to reduce the confusion, shifting the focus of academic analysis away from the product as a text and towards a live product that requires a more sensorial involvement. Even within the bounds of literature, the School of Constanza developed the theory of aesthetic response, again in an effort to explore the gap between the product and interpretation that takes place in the individual reader or spectator: ‘As a literary text can only produce a response when it is read, it is virtually impossible to describe this response without also analyzing the reading process’ (Iser, 1978: ix). Theatre director Anne Bogart speaks in similar terms of how art can arrest the attention of its viewer: An authentic work of art embodies intense energy. It demands response. You can either avoid it, shut it out, or meet it and tussle. It contains attractive and complicated energy fields and a logic of its own. It does not create desire or movement in the receiver, rather it engenders what James Joyce labelled ‘aesthetic arrest’. You are stopped in your tracks. You cannot easily walk by it and go on with your life. You find yourself in relation to something that you cannot readily dismiss. (Bogart, 2001: 63) However, it is more unusual to examine the process of creation in order to establish exactly how this relationship of ‘aesthetic arrest’ between creator and receiver is generated. A rehearsal process is in its simplest terms a period of practice before placing a theatrical production in front of an audience. However, the artistic process that 10 informs this act of preparation can take many different forms. Speaking on the nature of art, Aristotle emphasised that primarily ‘all art is concerned with coming into being […] art must be a matter of making’, and so he defined the particular state of mind necessary to enter a ‘reasoned state of capacity to make’ (Aristotle, 1998: 141).

It is in Spain alone, however, that this custom has attained notable polit- ical, cultural, and symbolic salience. For many Spaniards, the bull is a quasi-sacred creature (Pérez Álvarez 2004), the bullfight a display of exceptional artistry. Tourists consider bullfights virtually synonymous with Spain and flock to these events as a source of exotic entertainment. My impression, in fact, is that bullfighting is even more closely associated with Spanish national identity than baseball is to that of the United States. Garry Marvin puts the matter well when he writes that the cultur- al significance of the bullfight is “suggested by its general popular image as something quintessentially Spanish, by the considerable attention paid to it within Spain, and because of its status as an elaborate and spectacu- lar ritual drama which is staged as an essential part of many important celebrations” (Marvin 1988:xv).

The first thing that springs to mind is that this is a book that takes numerous risks. Its diary format is a risk on the current writing scene. Such a realistic narrative form implies the likelihood of a minority reception right from the outset. The elimination of any fictional perspective is cur- rently a sort of literary suicide. Anyone who writes a book free of fantasies could be said to walk a fine line with their readers. The majority want to read simulations. The book also has a feminist air to it, which together with the ostentation of scepticism may initially cause readers to shy away from these pages. Obviously, I write this hypothesis from a masculine point of view and in it I’m attempting to express my first impression when the book I had in my hands was fresh out of the oven. Nonetheless, as I knew the writer person- ally I was inclined to take the theoretical risk. I have to admit here, that I opened the pages of this account out of curiosity about my friend, though this didn’t prevent a certain degree of scepticism on my part and a slight willingness to be distracted when faced with the first undigested page.

ON THE PHENOMENON OF TABARNIA IN CATALONIA1 Abstract The paper analyzes the phenomenon of Tabarnia, a grassroots social movement aiming to ex- pose and counter the absurdities of the Catalan independence nationalism. The adherents of Tabar- nia employ irony, situational humour, performance and historical re-enactment to ridicule and neu- tralize the nationalist discourse. Key words Tabarnia, Catalonia, Tabarnia is not Catalonia, Albert Boadella, satire, irony, Catalonian na- tionalism, tabarneses, Tabarnexit There can be no doubt that Spain’s greatest political problem today is the sit- uation in Catalonia which, governed by the nationalist faction, clearly strives for secession. The Spanish State faces a serious structural problem, which stems from the traditional conflict between unionists and federalists. Although the Consti- tution of Spain of 1978 affirms it to be a united state based on autonomies, the example of Catalonia demonstrates that the issue persists. As a by-product of that process, a grassroots social movement emerged in Catalonia, whose goal is to counter the nationalist project by ridicule and tongue-in-cheek mimicking.     Fall 1996 M Albert Boadella and the Catalan Comedy of Cultural Politics Jill Lane I am a puppeteer without country or god who complicates the good progress of society -Albert Boadella Director Albert Boadella appreciates the seriousness of a good joke: three decades of playing well-targeted political comedy in Catalonia have—among other things—started riots, provoked bombings, and certainly won him a reputation as Catalonia's most provocative jester. In 1989, he chose to play a small joke on the Catalan government, which had for some time been planning the opening of their prestigious National Theatre. A dozen years after Spain's difficult transition to democracy, and only nine years after Catalonia was established as a relatively autonomous government, the opening of the National Theatre of Catalonia appeared to seal the region's long struggle for national and democratic autonomy. While promoted in populist terms—"a theatre for everyone, by everyone, at the service of everyone"—this state-funded theatre would serve the project of national reconstruction, complementing the legal and political process with that of cultural legitimation, lending coherence and world- class prestige to a rehabilitated Catalan culture.1 Albert Boadella was decidedly uncomfortable with this reinvention of the theatre as Catalan ideological state apparatus, and felt that perhaps he too, as the ranking theatre activist during the long struggle for autonomy, should reconsider his service to the nation. I maintain that in the aftermath of the dictatorship of Francisco Franco (1939-1975), film directors and writers resort to the grotesque to unveil the contradictions of the political narratives of the Transition to Democracy in order to destabilize them. For these authors, the grotesque is the key instrument used to challenge the perception of Spain as a paradigm of democratic transformation: they contest the celebratory democratizing discourse of the Transition, undermine the reconstruction of national and political identity in Catalonia, and question and denounce the negative social and political effects of the Pact of Forgetting in twenty-first century Spain. In the first chapter, I study how Luis García Berlanga’s film Patrimonio nacional (1981) and Pedro Almodóvar’s film ¿Qué he hecho yo para merecer esto? Burgos) [email protected] Recepción: 20/12/2017 Revisión: 13/04/2018 Aceptación: 24/09/2018 RESUMEN: Los conflictos entre la milicia y la sociedad que supusieron la crisis del Cu-Cut en 1905 y que provocaron la promulgación de la llamada Ley de Juris- dicciones al año siguiente, se volvieron a repetir en 1978 con el proceso militar en el que se enjuició y condenó por un tribunal penal militar a los miembros del grupo teatral catalán Els Joglars por varios delitos de injurias a los Ejércitos tipificados en el Código de Justicia Militar perpetrados durante la representación de la obra La Torna. En ambos episodios se recurrió a los tribunales militares para represaliar conductas ajenas al «ámbito estrictamente castrense». Sin embargo, la función de los órganos integrantes de la jurisdicción militar debería ser el resultado de la necesidad de impartir justicia exclusivamente en el seno de las Fuerzas Armadas. En consecuencia, forzar la aplicación del Derecho Penal Militar a personal civil puede suponer, como ha ocurrido en esas circunstancias, una desnaturalización y sobredimensionamiento como factor polemológico.
