Added 31 Jan 2000 "Hello, My name is Igor and I am a Russian by birth. I have read a lot about Islam, I have Arabic and Chechen friends and I read a lot about the Holy Koran and its teaching. I resent the drunkenness and stupidity of the Russian society and especially the gorrilla soldiers that are fighting against the noble Mujahideen in Chechnya. I would like to become a Muslim and in connection with this I would like to ask you to give me some guidance. Where do I go in Moscow for help in becoming a Muslim. Inshallah I can accomplish this with your help." [Igor, Moscow, Russia, 28 Jan 2000] "May Allah help you brothers. I am from Kuwait. All Kuwaitis are with you. We hope for you to win this war, inshallah very soon. If you want me to do anything for you, please tell me. I really feel ashamed sitting in Kuwait and you brothers are fighting the kuffar (disbelievers). Please tell me if we can come there with you, can we come?" [Brothers R and R, Kuwait, 30 Jan 2000] "Salam my Brave Mujahadeen who are fighting in Chechnya and the ones administrating this web site. Every day I come to this site several time just to catch a glimpse of the beautiful faces whom Allah has embraced shahadah and to get the latest news. I envy you O Mujahadeen, tears run into my eyes every time I hear any news and see any faces on this site. My beloved brothers, Allah has chosen you to reawaken Muslims around the world.

Copyright is owned by the Author of the thesis. Permission is given for a copy to be downloaded by an individual for the purpose of research and private study only. The thesis may not be reproduced elsewhere without the permission of the Author. Hook, Line & Singer! Essential criteria for maximising the play list potential of New Zealand music on commercial radio: A Programme Directors' perspective A thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Media Studies at Massey University Palmerston North, New Zealand Karen Neill 2000 'Station and programme directors act as gatekeepers, being responsible for ensuring a prescribed and identifiable sound or format, based on what the management of the station believes will generate the largest audience - and ratings - and consequent advertising revenue. The ... prograrnme director ... will regularly sift through new releases, selecting three or four to add to the playlist. The criteria underpinning this process will normally be a combination of the reputation of the artist; a record's previous performance, if already released overseas; whether the song fits the station's format; and, at times, the gut intuition of those making the decision. In the case of the first of these factors, reputation and previous track record, publicity material from the label/artist/distributor plays an important role, jogging memories or sparking interest in a previously unknown artist' (Shuker, 1998, p. 242). Abstract For years the commercial radio industry in New Zealand has fought against regulation oflocal music on the airwaves, citing that in the competitive radio environment (a product of governmental deregulation of the industry) it would be detrimental to both their business and the present levels oflocal content being achieved voluntarily by radio.

  • Observations and Implications of Damage from the Magnitude Mw 6.3 Christchurch, New Zealand Earthquake of 22Nd February 2011
Manuscript Click here to download Manuscript: Observations of Damage From Mw 6 Christchurch earthquake_revision1.docClick here to view linked References OBSERVATIONS AND IMPLICATIONS OF DAMAGE FROM THE MAGNITUDE MW 6.3 CHRISTCHURCH, NEW ZEALAND EARTHQUAKE OF 22ND FEBRUARY 2011 Sean Wilkinson, Damian Grant, Elizabeth Williams, Sara Paganoni, Stuart Fraser, David Boon, Anna Mason, Matthew Free ABSTRACT This paper describes the observations made by a reconnaissance team following the 22nd February 2011, Mw 6.3, Christchurch, New Zealand earthquake (GNS Science; 2011). The team comprised of members of the UK based Earthquake Engineering Field Investigation Team (EEFIT) who spent five days collecting observations on damage resulting from the earthquake. Although the magnitude of this earthquake was not particularly high (Mw 6.3), the shallow focus and close proximity resulted in locally very high ground motions, widespread damage and 182 fatalities. The earthquake is also particularly notable for the widespread liquefaction it caused, landslides and rockfalls in the hills south of Christchurch, and the significant damage suffered by unreinforced masonry and historic structures. Over wide areas of central Christchurch, recorded accelerations were in excess of those required by the current New Zealand seismic loadings standard (NZS1170.5:2004): Standards New Zealand (2004), and therefore the earthquake presented a valuable opportunity to assess performance of modern buildings under code-level ground acceleration. INTRODUCTION th At 04:35 (local time) on the 4 September 2010 the province of Canterbury suffered a magnitude Mw 7.1 earthquake. The epicentre of this earthquake was approximately 40 km West of Christchurch near the town of Darfield (GNS Science, 2010).
