CENTRE DE PUTERE GETICE PREROMANE ÎN SUD-VESTUL DOBROGEI. REALITĂŢI ARHEOLOGICE ŞI UNELE CONSIDERAŢII ISTORICE (I) Mihai Irimia Cuvinte cheie: centre de putere; Dobrogea; geţi; greci; sciţi; odrisi; romani; dava; Adâncata; Satu Nou; Izvoarele; Durostorum; Sborjanovo-Sveštari; Rholes; Dapyx; M. Licinius Crassus; zone carstice. Mots-clé: centre de pouvoir; Dobroudja; Gètes; Grecs; Scythes; Odryses; Romains; dava; Adâncata; Satu Nou; Izvoarele; Durostorum; Sborjanovo-Sveštari; Rholès; Dapyx; M. Licinius Crassus; zone karstique. I. Schiţă istorică a regiunii pe baza izvoarelor scrise.

Epigtoaphic Bulletin for Greek Religion 1996 (EBGR 1996) The ninth issue of the BEGR contains only part of the epigraphie harvest of 1996; unforeseen circumstances have prevented me and my collaborators from covering all the publications of 1996, but we hope to close the gaps next year. We have also made several additions to previous issues. In the past years the BEGR had often summarized publications which were not primarily of epigraphie nature, thus tending to expand into an unavoidably incomplete bibliography of Greek religion. From this issue on we return to the original scope of this bulletin, whieh is to provide information on new epigraphie finds, new interpretations of inscriptions, epigraphieal corpora, and studies based p;imarily on the epigraphie material. Only if we focus on these types of books and articles, will we be able to present the newpublications without delays and, hopefully, without too many omissions. -
Compositional Analyses of Isaccea Mosaic Glass Tesserae (11 Th Century Ad)
IBA analyses on Isaccea glass tesserae COMPOSITIONAL ANALYSES OF ISACCEA MOSAIC GLASS TESSERAE (11 TH CENTURY AD) R. BUGOI 1, I. POLL 2, GH. Br ătianu 2, Bucharest 030174, Romania, [email protected] , [email protected] Received: 29 July 2015 Abstract A set of colored glass tesserae ( yellow, blue turquoise and green turquoise) discovered at Isaccea and dated to the 11 th century AD was investigated using Ion Beam Analysis (IBA) techniques to determine their chemical composition. Particular attention was paid to identify the glass chromophores and opacifiers. Based on the analytical results, several conclusions about the way these archaeological finds were manufactured, particularly on the raw materials and employed techniques were deduced. Key words : historical glass, glass tesserae, chemical composition, PIXE, PIGE, Isaccea 1. INTRODUCTION 1.1. CHEMICAL COMPOSITION OF ANCIENT GLASS ARTEFACTS The scientific study of archaeological glass artefacts can provide insights on how these utilitarian or decorative objects were produced. In particular, glass chemical composition can suggest which were the raw materials and manufacturing techniques. Based on hard science arguments, indications about the way the ancient societies functioned - access to resources and level of craftsmanship - can be obtained [1]. This paper focuses on five glass mosaic tesserae discovered in archaeological context at Isaccea and dated to the 11 th century AD. They have been the analyzed for their chemical composition using a combination of two non-destructive external IBA methods, namely Particle Induced X-ray Emission (PIXE) and Particle Induced Gamma-ray Emission (PIGE). -

Bulletin of the John Rylands Library
THE ORIGIN OF THE CULT OF DIONYSOS.1 . , BY J. RENDEL HARRIS, M.A., O.LITT., U...D., O.THEOL., ETC •• HON. FELLOW OF CLARE COLLECE, CAMBRIDGE ; DIRECTOR OF STUDIF.S AT THE WOODBROOKE SETTLEMENT, BIRMINGHAM. ODERN research is doing much to resolve the complicated and almost interminable riddles of the Greek and Latin M Mythologies. In another sense than the religious interpre tation, the gods of Olympus are fading away : as they fade from off the ethereal scene, the earlier forms out of which they were evolved come up again into view ; the Thunder-god goes back into the Thunder-man, or into the Thunder-bird or Thunder-tree ; Zeus takes the stately ~~ in vegetable life, of the Oak-tree, or if he must be Besh and blood he comes back as a Red-headed Woodpecker. Other ud similar evolutions are discovered and discoverable ; and the gods acquire a fresh interest when we have learnt their parentage. Sometimes, in the Zeus-worship at all events, we can see two forms of deity standing side by side, one coming on to the screen before the other has moved off ; the zoomorph or animal form co-existing and hardly displacing the phytomorph or plant fonn. One of the prettiest instances of this co-existence that I have dis covered came to my notice in connection with a study that I war. making of the place of bees in early religion. It was easy to see that the primitive human thinker had assigned a measure of sanctity to the bee, for he had found it in the hollows of his sacred tree : at the same time he had noticed that bees sprang from a little white larva.
