Historical Sketch

Ola A. Sater was born on April 17, 1920 in the town of Harstad, Norway. He immigrated to the United States of America in 1925, and became a naturalized citizen in 1929. In February of 1943, he joined the United States Marine Corps, where he attained the rank of Corporal and received specialized training as a demolitions expert. He joined the 1St Marine Division in the Pacific Theater. From April 1 until July 2, 1945 he was involved in action against the Japanese forces on the island of Okinawa.

After his discharge from the military, Sater attended Catholic University in Washington, D.C. in 1946, where he majored in Engineering and Architecture. He graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture and Engineering in 1950. Sater worked at a variety of architectural and engineering firms in the New York City area, reaching the position of Senior Draftsman and Job Captain with the architectural firm The Eggers Partnership in 1975.

Sater possessed a deep interest in World War I aviation being both involved with the Cross and Cockade association and corresponding with a number of researchers and scholars about World War I aviation. Sater was especially interested in the activities and operations of No. 56 Squadron RFC/RAF. Sater, collaborated with another aviation historian, Alex Revell, on a manuscript entitled Fifty-Six, which provided a history of No. 56 Squadron, however, this work remained unpublished.

Sater passed away on June 2, 1987. He was married, but had no children. Upon his death, his niece, Dorothy Drake donated his material to the History of Aviation Collection at The University of Texas at Dallas.

The Ola A. Sater Collection is arranged into eight series

Series I: O.A. Sater Biographical Information and Research Notes. 1.5 linear feet. 3 boxes. This series is arranged topically. It includes biographical information about Ola Sater, as well as notes and lists compiled to aid him in research and writing.

Series II: World War I Aviation Activities (By Country). 8 linear feet. 16 Boxes. This series is arranged into four subseries. Each subseries focuses on the aviation activity of a specific country, or group of countries in World War I.

Subseries I: France. .5 linear feet. 1 box. This series is arranged topically. Its contains information about French World War I aviation activities.

Subseries II: Germany and Austro-Hungary. .5 linear feet. 1 box. This series is arranged topically. It houses information about the German and Austro-Hungarian World War I aviation activities.

Subseries III: The United Kingdom. 5.5 linear feet. 11 boxes. This series is arranged topically. It consists of information about the RFC/RAF and RNAS and their activities in World War I. The World War I aviation activities of Australia, Canada, and New Zealand are also located here.

Subseries IV: The United States of America. 1.5 linear feet. 3 boxes. This series is arranged topically. It includes information about the World War I aviation activities of the USAS as well as American’s who served with other powers during World War I.

Series III: RFC/RAF No. 56 Squadron. 3.5 linear feet. 7 boxes. This series is arranged topically. It houses information, interviews, photographs, and notes about the history of RFC/RAF No. 56 Squadron. The bulk of this material served as research for Ola Sater and Alex Revell in writing their manuscript Fifty-Six.

Series IV: Correspondence. 2.5 linear feet. 5 boxes. This series is arranged alphabetically by correspondent’s last name. It contains the correspondence various World War I scholars, researchers, friends and acquaintances to Ola Sater.

Subseries I: Microfilm. .5 linear feet. 1 box. This series is arranged by date. It contains microfilm copies of World War I documents.

Subseries II: Reel to Reel Tapes and 8mm Films. 3.75 linear feet. 2 boxes. This series is arranged by media type. It contains reel to reel tapes of interview with World War I aviators and 8mm film reels depicting personalities and things from World War I and II.

Scope and Content

The Ola A. Sater Collection is organized into eight series of material:

Series I: O.A. Sater Biographical Information and Research Notes – 3 Boxes (1914 – 1979)

This series contains notes, lists, biographies, reports, and other information used by Ola Sater to conduct research on World War I aviation topics.

Series II: World War I Aviation Activities (By Country) – 16 Boxes (1914 – 1979)

This series contains documents related to the aviation activities of various countries involved in World War I. It is divided into four subseries.

Subseries I: France – 1 Box (1914 – 1969) This series includes squadron histories, victory and casualty lists, aircraft data, and other information related to French aviation in World War I.

Subseries II: Germany and Austro-Hungary – 1 Box (1914 – 1920) This series contains squadron histories, victory and casualty lists, aircraft data, and other information related to German and Austro Hungarian aviation in World War I

Subseries III: The United Kingdom – 11 Boxes (1914 – 1979) This series consists of squadron histories, victory and casualty lists, aircraft data, and other information related to British aviation in World War I. Material covers both the RFC/RAF and the RNAS, as well as Australian, Canadian, and New Zealand squadrons. A few documents provide histories of Australian and New Zealand squadron form World War II.

Subseries IV: The United States of America – 3 Boxes (1914 – 1968) This series includes squadron histories, victory and casualty lists, aircraft data, and other information related to American aviation in World War I. It covers both the activities of the USAS as well as American’s flying for other power involved in the war.

Series III: RFC/RAF No. 56 Squadron – 7 Boxes (1914 – 1972)

This series contains squadron rosters, casualty and victory lists, histories, interviews views with pilots, microfilm copies of the squadron record book, and photographs related to RFC/RAF No. 56 Squadron. It also contains a manuscript copy of, as well as correspondence relating to Fifty Six, an unpublished work written by Ola Sater and Alex Revell. This collection served as Ola Sater’s research for the creation of this manuscript.

Series IV: Correspondence – 5 Boxes (1963 – 1987)

This series consists of correspondence between Ola Sater and various friends, acquaintances, colleagues, World War I researchers and others. The largest portion of the correspondence is between Ola Sater and Raymond Collishaw, a World War I British Ace, and Alex Revell, Sater’s co-author on Fifty-Six.

Series V: Magazines, Journal, Newspaper Clippings, Drawings – 2 Boxes (1918 – 1967)

This series includes articles from a number of World War I related publication, newspaper obituaries of World War I flyers, aviation artwork, and world aircraft blueprints, model plans, and three-way drawings.

Series VI: Photographs – 8 Boxes (1914 – 1990)

This series contains photographs of the world aviation activities during World War I by various powers. It is divided into five subseries.

Subseries I: Central Powers – 1 Box (1914 – 1918) This subseries includes photographs of German and Austro-Hungarian aircraft, pilots, ground personnel, and squadrons.

Subseries II: The United Kingdom – 3 Boxes (1914 – 1918) This subseries consists of photographs of British (as well as Australian and Canadian), aircraft, personnel and operations of both the RFC/RAF and RNAS.

Subseries III: The United States of America – 2 boxes (1914 – 1918) This subseries houses photographs of American aircraft, pilots, and squadrons. It also contains photographs of American’s who served with other powers during World War I.

Subseries IV: Other Photographs – 1 Box (1914 – 1970) This subseries includes photographs of French and Russian World War I aviation, lighter-than-air, seaplanes, and aircraft from the post-World War I Era

Subseries V: Slides and Negatives – 1 Box (1914 – 1970) This subseries consists of slides and negatives depicting World War I aviation. It

also contains a number of photographic lists, and an article on the preservation of negative film.

Series VII: Multimedia – 3 Boxes (1915 – 1967)

This series consists of microfilmed World War I Documents, reel to reel tapes, and 8mm movies. It is divided into two series.

Subseries I: Microfilm (1915 – 1918) This subseries contains microfilmed copies of the RFC/RAF War Diary from World War I. It includes three reels of positive microfilm, and three reels of negative microfilm.

Subseries II: Reel to Reel Tapes and 8mm Films - 2 Boxes (1915 – 1967) This subseries consists of a number of reel tapes of conversations and interviews with Paul Winslow and Alex Revell. It also contains a number of 8mm, black and white films depicting various World War I and II people and things in action.

Series VIII: Oversize Material – 1 Box (1914 – 1959) This series includes materials too large to fit in other parts of the collection. It contains several large photographs, a map of World War I airfields in the North Texas area, and photographs of British, French, German, and Italian aircraft.
