Sater was born on April 17, 1920 in the town of Harstad, Norway. He immigrated to the United States of America in 1925, and became a naturalized citizen in 1929. In February of 1943, he joined the United States Marine Corps, where he attained the rank of Corporal and received specialized training as a demolitions expert. He joined the 1St Marine Division in the Pacific Theater. From April 1 until July 2, 1945 he was involved in action against the Japanese forces on the island of Okinawa. After his discharge from the military, Sater attended Catholic University in Washington, D.C. in 1946, where he majored in Engineering and Architecture. He graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture and Engineering in 1950. Sater worked at a variety of architectural and engineering firms in the New York City area, reaching the position of Senior Draftsman and Job Captain with the architectural firm The Eggers Partnership in 1975. Sater possessed a deep interest in World War I aviation being both involved with the Cross and Cockade association and corresponding with a number of researchers and scholars about World War I aviation. Sater was especially interested in the activities and operations of No. 56 Squadron RFC/RAF. Sater, collaborated with another aviation historian, Alex Revell, on a manuscript entitled Fifty-Six, which provided a history of No. 56 Squadron, however, this work remained unpublished. Sater passed away on June 2, 1987. He was married, but had no children. Upon his death, his niece, Dorothy Drake donated his material to the History of Aviation Collection at The University of Texas at Dallas. Series Description The Ola A. Sater Collection is arranged into eight series Series I: O.A. Sater Biographical Information and Research Notes. 1.5 linear feet. 3 boxes. This series is arranged topically. It includes biographical information about Ola Sater, as well as notes and lists compiled to aid him in research and writing. Series II: World War I Aviation Activities (By Country). 8 linear feet. 16 Boxes. This series is arranged into four subseries. Each subseries focuses on the aviation activity of a specific country, or group of countries in World War I. Subseries I: France. .5 linear feet. 1 box. This series is arranged topically. Its contains information about French World War I aviation activities. Subseries II: Germany and Austro-Hungary. .5 linear feet. 1 box. This series is arranged topically. It houses information about the German and Austro-Hungarian World War I aviation activities. Subseries III: The United Kingdom. 5.5 linear feet. 11 boxes. This series is arranged topically. It consists of information about the RFC/RAF and RNAS and their activities in World War I. The World War I aviation activities of Australia, Canada, and New Zealand are also located here. Subseries IV: The United States of America. 1.5 linear feet. 3 boxes. This series is arranged topically. It includes information about the World War I aviation activities of the USAS as well as American’s who served with other powers during World War I. Series III: RFC/RAF No. 56 Squadron. 3.5 linear feet. 7 boxes. This series is arranged topically. It houses information, interviews, photographs, and notes about the history of RFC/RAF No. 56 Squadron. The bulk of this material served as research for Ola Sater and Alex Revell in writing their manuscript Fifty-Six. Series IV: Correspondence. 2.5 linear feet. 5 boxes. This series is arranged alphabetically by correspondent’s last name. It contains the correspondence various World War I scholars, researchers, friends and acquaintances to Ola Sater. 4 Series V: Magazines, Journal, Newspaper Clippings, Drawings. 1linear foot. 2 boxes. This series is arranged topically. It includes articles, drawings, and plans related to World War I aviation form a variety of sources. Series VI: Photographs. 4 linear feet. 8 boxes.
