    View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by University of the South Pacific Electronic Research Repository Ending Nuclear testing in the Pacific: Bishop Bryce and the Pacific Conference of Churches Christine Weir School of Social Studies, University of the South Pacific Conference paper delivered at the 20th Pacific History Association Conference, Wellington, New Zealand, 8 December 2012 One of the dominant issues of South Pacific regional meetings and international negotiations in the 1970s and 1980s was the use of the South Pacific as a testing ground for nuclear weapons by outside powers and, at least potentially, as a dumping ground for nuclear waste. While the establishment of the South Pacific Nuclear Free Zone in 1985 reduced the immediate concerns, arguments about compensation and acknowledgment of damage rumble on. The negotiations which led to the establishment of the Nuclear Free Zone have been investigated by a number of political scientists,1 and studies of the Pacific Nuclear Free Movement, often by activists, have described and deplored the devastation of US Trusts Territories and their successor polities and French Polynesia by nuclear testing.2 But neither the political scientists nor the activists have paid much, if any, attention to the role of church, trades union and civil society activists in preparing the ground for political action, or the links between government actors and civil society campaigners. Previous studies, especially in Australia, have recognised the role of Trades Unions in pressuring Australian and New Zealand governments to adopt an anti‐nuclear stance. However in the Pacific the churches and other NGOs seem to have been more influential than trades unions.

Grappling with the Bomb: Opposition to Pacific nuclear testing in the 1950s Nic Maclellan In the fifty years from 1946-1996, the United States, France and the United Kingdom conducted over 315 nuclear tests in the Pacific islands. Starting in the 1940s, there was popular opposition to these testing programs across Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands, led by trade unions, churches and indigenous organisations. The author, who was a member of the Nuclear Free and Independent Pacific movement (NFIP) and served in its regional secretariat in Fiji, will discuss the impacts of nuclear testing on the civilian and military personnel who staffed the test sites over fifty years, as well as neighbouring island communities. Using British nuclear testing on Kiritimati (Christmas Island) as a case study, the article will detail ongoing efforts by nuclear survivors to seek recognition and compensation for the health an environmental impacts of testing. From the beginning of the nuclear age, the United States, Britain and France sought “empty” spaces to conduct their Cold War programs of nuclear testing. For fifty years between 1946 and 1996, the deserts of Australia and the islands of the central and south Pacific were used to conduct over 315 atmospheric and underground tests at ten different sites. From 1946 to 1958, the United States conducted 67 atomic and hydrogen bomb tests at Bikini and Enewetak atolls in the Marshall Islands.

France detonated its first atomic bomb on February 13, 1960 at the Reggane test site, in the middle of the Algerian Sahara. But Reggane was neither the first nor the only site that the military had contemplated for nuclear testing. As early as 1957, General Charles Ailleret (who headed the “Special Weapons Section”) had considered the Tuamotu Islands in French Polynesia. He had rejected them with some regret: they were simply too far away and well out of reach of any airport. In subsequent months, Ailleret and his committee briefly considered underground test sites on metropolitan soil--notably in the Alps--but rejected them for fear of contaminating the ground water. They contemplated Corsica, but worried about sparking local opposition just as the tourist industry was getting underway. The military also conducted studies on Réunion and New Caledonia. In the end, however, it settled on the Saharan site because it could be used quickly. But as Jean-Marc Regnault has shown, this was always a temporary measure--after all, Algerian politics were only getting more difficult for the French government. Even before the first Reggane test, Regnault argues, the government had begun building an airport in Tahiti and the military had decided to move its test site to the Pacific. In 1963, construction began on the Centre d’Expérimentation Pacifique (CEP), as the test site on the Moruroa atoll was dubbed.[1] France continued testing in the Sahara until the Moruroa site was ready.

TM ABOARD NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC ORION | 2019 DEAR TRAVELER, In 2016 and 2017 I spent two weeks in Polynesia, and on August 9th I’m going back—this time on our expedition through the Tuamotu and Society Islands. (If you’re so inclined to join me there are still a few cabins left.) Why am I returning? Because I find the region utterly joyous, beautiful, and fascinating; the people, the land and the sea—particularly the undersea. I might not have developed my interest, however, were it not for two perspective-changing moments. The first was hearing my father’s tales of the South Pacific, particularly Easter Island which he explored and brought visitors to in the 1960s. The second was traveling in the company of Bengt Danielsson in 1987 on a sailing barque from Easter Island to Tahiti. Subsequent to our voyage Bengt, who sailed with Thor Heyerdahl on the Kon-Tiki in 1947, stayed in Tahiti and became a renowned anthropologist. “We never learned much about Polynesia in school, actually nothing,” he told me once with a smile. What he said was true. We in the West were pretty obsessed about Europe, the Greeks and Romans, the Egyptians—but not the Polynesians. So, it’s not a region on many people’s bucket list, which actually I’m grateful for as it’s in no way overrun. I think a lot of people come here first somewhat accidentally or for distinctly romantic reasons (honeymooners love Bora Bora). But there are deeper discoveries to make.

    Island Studies Journal, ahead of print Teehuteatuaonoa aka ‘Jenny’, the most traveled woman on the Bounty: Chronicling female agency and island movements with Google Earth Donald Patrick Albert Department of Environmental and Geosciences, Sam Houston State University, USA [email protected] Abstract: Teehuteatuaonoa (or ‘Jenny’ by her English nickname) was one of 12 Polynesian women reaching Pitcairn Island with the HMS Bounty mutineers in 1790. She was the most traveled of these women and the first to return to Tahiti after 29 years away. Her journey is chronicled with Google Earth using a screenshot and caption for each waypoint. The journey included 15 links totaling 24,090 km or 60% of the Earth’s circumference. Her longest link was 7,400 km aboard the Sultan, an American ship from Boston, which brought her from Coquimbo, Chile, to The Marquesas. Jenny’s life provides an excellent example of female agency during a period controlled and reported on by men. Her life epitomized Nicholas Thomas’ understanding that islander-empire contact during the 18th and 19th Centuries involved both survival and suffering, invention and exploitation. With its pirates, gorgeous women, and exotic islands, the mutiny on the Bounty continues to captivate the public, amateur enthusiasts and scholars across a wide range of academic disciplines.
