April 14-20, 2011 Volume XII, No. 15 A King’s passion for history and culture come alive at Outrigger on the Beach Award-winning cultural programming is the norm at this beachfront hotel

David La‘amea Kalākaua, the last reigning king of Hawai‘i, so loved Hawai‘ian music, dance and festivities that he became affectionately known as the “Merrie Monarch.” A world-traveler and diplomat, and an accomplished composer and author, Kalākaua helped revive Hawaiian music and hula, which had been suppressed for many years by missionary influences in the islands.

In honor of Kalākaua’s passion for Hawai‘i’s arts and culture, Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach offers year-round cultural programming as part of its “Kalākaua Experience.” Launched in 2000, this award-winning program is designed to preserve and share Hawai‘i’s rich artistic, cultural, and environmental treasures – both ancient and contemporary – with guests.

Cultural activities at the hotel cover a broad spectrum with most free to hotel guests, or discounted if there is a fee, making it an attractive value for visitors seeking cultural experiences while on holiday.

The newest offering is the weekly free Hawaiian Vow Renewal ceremony, held exclusive for hotel guests every Thursday morning at 8 am on the beachfront lower patio, with Diamond Head and the Pacific Ocean as a backdrop. The non-denominational Hawaiian ceremony is conducted by a practicing kahu (Hawaiian officiant) who Continued on next page Inside this issue:

They are then honored with a graceful hula and serenaded with Hawaiian song; this is followed with a sprinkling of sea water before couples recite vows in the Hawaiian language. The ceremony concludes with the beautiful Hawaiian Wedding Song performed with a hula, and couples are presented with a certificate commemorating the celebration.

Other free activities guests can enjoy when staying at Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach include casual classes in Hawaiian kukui nut bracelet making and storytelling; flower lei making; traditional Ti leaf lei making; ukulele lessons; hula lessons; the making of luggage tags with a guest’s Hawaiian name; mini koa surfboard shaping; and Hawaiian petroglyph greeting cards. Additionally, fun events throughout the year highlight Hawai‘i’s rich multi- ethnic make-up, such as a Chinese New Year celebration in February, Duke Kahanamoku surfing activities during the summer, and spooky Hawaiian storytelling around Halloween.

Outrigger employees play a key role in the hotels’ cultural education efforts with most classes led by employees born and raised in the islands. As a result, guests who participate in the Kalākaua Experience programs are exposed to a depth of local knowledge and expertise not always found elsewhere.

The hotel’s commitment to Hawai‘i’s sense of place goes beyond programming, however. Other opportunities for guests to experience Hawaiian culture and history include a special lobby showcase featuring dozens of rare Hawaiian artifacts on loan from the venerable Mission House Museum as well as various private collectors.

The hotel’s new Voyager Room in the hotel lobby is a place to relax after the rigors of travel or to enjoy a quiet place to read. It features an honor library filled with books about Hawai‘i’s unique island heritage. There are travel guides, the Hawaiian Dictionary, and a vast array of books on Hawaiian culture and history.

Custom-designed Hawaiian furniture from master artisan James Ferla, artwork by the iconic Hawaiian artist and historian – the late Herb Kawainui Kane, two Kahili – feather stanchions crafted by hotel employees, and a century-old fully restored outrigger canoe rigged in traditional Hawaiian pre-contact style all are hallmarks of the hotel’s commitment to its island roots.

“Outrigger Hotels & Resorts was born in Hawai‘i, and therefore, supporting what makes our islands so special has always been an integral part of this company’s heart and soul,” said Robert McConnell, general manager of Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach. “Our cultural education programs are a win-win all around. They support worthwhile community organizations, give our guests opportunities for authentic island experiences, and provide an important connection between our employees and our community.”

American Academy of Neurology annual meeting expected to top initial forecast by more than 2,000 participants

Pre-registration for the American Academy of Neurology’s (AAN) 63rd-Annual Meeting at the Hawai‘i Convention Center has toppled previously expected attendance by more than 2,000 attendees.

The world’s largest gathering of neurologists will be held April 9-16 at the Center, including a multi-faceted schedule with major public and neighbor-island events. The conference is expected to draw more than 9,000 attendees, well above the 7,000 initially forecast, making it one of the Center’s largest events in 2011. That translates into more than $42 million in state revenue, with the Center’s hotel partners benefiting from 72,360 room nights. “The aloha spirit we have experienced in Hawai‘i and at the Hawai‘i Convention Center is the standard by which we set all other meetings,” said Catherine M. Rydell, CAE, Executive Director and CEO of the American Academy of Neurology. “This conference will feature our most in-depth specialty and subspecialty programming to date, including seminars on Alzheimer’s disease, stroke, child neurology, movement disorders and brain imaging.”

Participation is expected from 93 countries, and will include world-class research on the latest advances in the areas of diagnosing, treating and managing disorders of the brain and nervous system such as Alzheimer’s disease, stroke, migraine, multiple sclerosis, brain injury, Parkinson’s disease and epilepsy. More than 3,000 abstracts of scientific studies were submitted for the conference, of which more than 2,500 were accepted for presentation, making for AAN’s largest, most comprehensive science program ever.

“This major conference helps us realize a benefit both in Honolulu and for our neighbor-island partners,” said Joe Davis, SMG general manager of the Hawai‘i Convention Center. “Once again, this places the state at the epicenter of breakthrough medical research and studies.”

Other major medical conferences at the Hawai‘i Convention Center in 2011 include the BMT Tandem Meetings in February; the American Psychiatric Association’s 164th annual meeting from May 14-18; and the American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP) annual meeting from Oct. 22-Oct. 27.

To kick off the conference on April 9, American Academy of Neurology Foundation is hosting its first-ever Brain Health Fair, a free public event open to anyone interested in learning how the brain works, as well as people with neurologic disorders and their caregivers, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Hilton Hawaiian Village in Waikiki. The family-friendly event will feature free helmets and fittings for children, Q&As with experts, activities, health seminars and videos from the Neuro Film Festival, as well as free food for the first 1,000 registrants. Register online at www.brainhealthfair.com.

In addition to the events in Honolulu, AAN is also hosting a special Neuroimaging Conference at the Hilton Waikoloa Village on the Big Island April 16-17. Attendees will learn the latest about current technology from an international field of experts.

“We are pleased that the American Academy of Neurology has selected the Hawai‘i Convention Center for its 63rd Annual Meeting, which will bring in more than 9,000 attendees from 93 countries,” said Mike McCartney president and CEO of the Hawai‘i Tourism Authority (HTA). “The HTA, together with the HCC, remain committed to marketing Hawai‘i as a global meeting destination and will continue to capitalize on the interest in our state as we prepare to host the 2011 APEC Leaders’ meetings in November.”

The American Academy of Neurology, an association of more than 22,500 neurologists and neuroscience professionals, is dedicated to promoting the highest quality patient-centered neurologic care. Bonnie Kiyabu named General Manager of Ocean Resort Hotel Waikīkī

Kokua Hospitality, management firm of the Ocean Resort Hotel Waikiki, today announced the appointment of Bonnie Kiyabu as general manager of the property. Kiyabu takes on the responsibility of running the 451-room Ocean Resort Hotel Waikīkī as the property is in the midst of undergoing some exciting changes, highlighted by a complete renovation over the next year and its rebranding as a Hyatt Place Hotel later this fall.

“We feel that Bonnie Kiyabu is exactly the kind of experienced and energetic leader that we need to guide the Ocean Resort Hotel Waikiki during this key juncture of transition and renovation,” said Phil Tufano, partner and executive vice president of operations for Kōkua Hospitality. “At the Hyatt Regency Waikiki, she proved herself to be a rising star in Hawai‘i’s lodging industry who was more than ready to run a major hotel property as a general manager. Along with her extensive hotel experience, we appreciate the fact that she was well- liked and respected by her colleagues and that she is deeply committed to Hawai‘i’s culture and to the betterment of the community, all of which makes her the ideal leader to run our hotel.”

Before joining Ocean Resort Hotel Waikiki last month, Kiyabu had spent her entire career at the Hyatt Regency Waikiki Beach Resort and Spa, starting there in 1976. In the ensuing years, she worked her way up through management and most recently served as executive assistant manager since 1999. The position put her in charge of more than 400 associates and numerous responsibilities, including guest services, concierge services, front office, housekeeping, security, and spa operations.

Kiyabu says her years of experience at the Hyatt Regency Waikiki Beach Resort and Spa has prepared her perfectly for her new role as general manager of Ocean Resort Hotel Waikiki. “My career goal was to become a hotel general manager and I couldn’t have asked for a better situation to start out, especially with all the plans and changes for improvements taking shape and the supportive and hard-working team of associates I am working with,” said Kiyabu. “The Ocean Resort Hotel Waikiki is a wonderful property in a beautiful setting that is only going to become more special as we transform its rebranding and complete the refurbishments. Our guests are going to be very happy with the end results.”

A Kamehameha Schools graduate, Kiyabu is active in the Waikiki community and has volunteered her time to support numerous improvement and fundraising efforts for nonprofit organizations and events, including the Waikiki Community Center, Visitor Industry Charity Walk, and Aloha Week festivities.
