The event, staged by Clear Channel Radio Hawaii and Oceanic Time Warner Cable, will take place at the Great Lawn at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Beach Resort & Spa on April 10, 2011 from noon to 5 p.m. All proceeds to benefit the American Red Cross for the Japan earthquake and Pacific tsunami relief efforts. Volume XII, No. 12 March 24-30, 2011 Hilton Hawaiian Village to be the site for April 10 “Kokua For Japan” fundraiser for victims of recent earthquake and tsunami “Kokua For Japan,” a Hawaii-based radio, television and Internet fund raising event for the victims of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan will be held on Sunday, April 10, 2011 from noon to 5 p.m. The event, staged by Clear Channel Radio Hawaii and Oceanic Time Warner Cable, will take place at the Great Lawn at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Beach Resort & Spa. All proceeds will be donated to the American Red Cross for disaster relief. “Supporting our friends and neighbors in Japan during this time of great need is the right thing to do,” said Chuck Cotton, Vice President and General Manager for Clear Channel Radio Hawaii. “Some of Hawaii’s top entertainers will be coming together for an afternoon of songs, laughter and inspiration.” “The people of Japan continue to be in our thoughts and prayers, and we’re so pleased to be involved in an event such as this that will bring together the people of Hawaii to raise much-needed funds for the earthquake and tsunami victims,” said Oceanic’s Bob Barlow. “We’re also continuing to show our support by offering free phone calls to Japan for our digital phone customers through April 15, 2011, as well as live round- the-clock news coverage from Japan.” On-air personalities from Clear Channel Radio and local broadcast and cable TV stations will host the program. -

Some Transportation and Communication Firsts in Hawaii Robert C. Schmitt Few aspects of Hawaiian life and technology have changed as dramatically as transportation and communication. The past two centuries have produced many new and revolutionary developments—the steamship, railroad, street car, automobile, freeway, parking meter, balloon, airplane, postage stamp, newspaper, telephone, and radio, to name some of the most important or ubiquitous. Despite the significance of these innovations, in many cases little is known of their first appearance in the Islands. Standard historical works are often silent on the subject. For a surprisingly large number, conflicting claims (some clearly impossible) run through the literature. Sources are seldom mentioned. Wherever possible, these "firsts" are traced in the following pages. TRANSPORTATION Ocean travel. On January 20, 1778, at Waimea, Kauai, Hawaiians saw their first recorded foreign ships, the Resolution and Discovery, commanded by Cook and Clerke.1 The first vessel of foreign design to be built in the Islands was the 36-foot Britannia, designed and constructed by Vancouver's carpenters in February 1794 for Kamehameha's navy.2 The first whaleships to visit Hawaii were the Balena (or Balaena) out of New Bedford, commanded by Captain Edmund Gardner, and the 262-ton ship Equator from Newburyport, with Captain Elisha Folger as skipper. The two vessels arrived via California, anchoring in Kealakekua Bay on September 29, 1819.3 The first whaleship to enter Honolulu Harbor was the Maro, of Nantucket registry under Joseph Allen, master, in 1820.4 "The first wharf constructed at this port was at a point a little to the northward of the foot of Nuuanu Street," according to Thrum. -

Communications Status Report for Areas Impacted by Hurricane Lane August 24, 2018 The following is a report on the status of communications services in geographic areas impacted by Hurricane Lane as of August 24, 2018 at 1:00 PM EDT. This report incorporates network outage data submitted by communications providers to the Federal Communications Commission’s Disaster Information Reporting System (DIRS). DIRS is currently activated for all counties in Hawaii. Note that the operational status of communications services during a disaster may evolve rapidly, and this report represents a snapshot in time. Thus far, however, it appears as though Hurricane Lane has had minimal effect on communications. For example, 99.4% of the cell sites in Hawaii remain operational. Counties of interest for this DIRS activation (the “disaster area”) include all five counties in the State of Hawaii: • Hawaii • Honolulu • Kalawao • Kauai • Maui 911 Services The Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau (PSHSB) learns the status of each Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) through the filings of 911 Service Providers in DIRS, reporting to the FCC’s Public Safety Support Center (PSSC), coordination with state 911 Administrators, and, if necessary, from individual PSAPs. Thirteen PSAPs in Hawaii are currently functioning normally according to the primary service provider. The PSAP at Maui County Police is reported as being rerouted without ALI. Wireless Services The following section describes the status of wireless communications services and restoration in the disaster area, including the percentage of cell sites out of service for each county. The following map of the disaster area illustrates which counties in Hawaii are most affected: 1 The information shown was provided by the signatories to the Wireless Resiliency Cooperative Framework: Hawaii: Overall, 0.6% of cell sites are out of service.
