Hawai‘i’s arts education leader for more than 25 years Preschool to Grade 12 | midpac.edu | (808) 973-5005 A poignant story graces our stage

Manoa Valley Theatre’s 50th Anniversary continues with a very special presentation that is a highlight in this auspicious season. Lorenzo DeStefano’s poignant drama, Shipment Day, shines light on a troublesome period of Hawaii’s history and the amazing fortitude of one of its citizens, Olivia Robello Breitha, who was his cousin. The play dramatizes her early years in when she was first disagnosed with Hansen’s Disease, and the resulting fear and hostilities she faced with this life changing condition. The play’s mirror on history is insightful, and its parallel to more recent epidemics and contemporary society’s response underscores the importance for education, understanding and compassion. We are grateful to Mr. DeStefano for inviting MVT to stage the World Premiere of his play. It is befitting to include this Hawaii based story in our first half-century celebration as we’re reflecting on our community, our mission, our past and our future. Thank you for engaging with us. Four more exciting productions are coming up this season, plus a music and comedy filled Studio Series lineup, so we hope to see you back at MVT often. We are grateful for your patronage and your support. Our partnership with you ensures robust and stimulating theatrical fare for our community. Thank you most kindly. Aloha,

Dwight T. Martin Producing Director

Shipment Day • Manoa Valley Theatre • 19 Hansen’s Disease / Leprosy

Shrouded in mystery and fear for thousands of years, the bacteriological disease known as leprosy and, more recently as Hansen’s disease, is named after Gerhard Armauer Hansen, the Norwegian physician who was the first to identify of the bacterium Mycobacterium leprae in 1873 as the causative agent of leprosy. Leprosy is an infection caused by slow-growing bacteria that affect the nerves, skin, eyes, and lining of the nose. With early diagnosis and treatment, the disease can be cured. People with Hansen’s disease can continue to work and lead an active life during and after treatment. Once feared as a highly contagious and devastating disease, with the introduction of sulfone drugs in the 1950s we now know that it doesn’t spread easily and treatment is very effective. However, if left untreated, the nerve damage can result in crippling of hands and feet, paralysis, and blindness. Leprosy is curable with a treatment known as multidrug therapy with the medications dapsone and rifampicin for six months. Treatment for multibacillary leprosy consists of rifampicin, dapsone, and clofazimine for 12 months. A number of other antibiotics may also be used. These treatments are provided free of charge by the World Health Organization. Globally in 2012, the number of chronic cases of leprosy was 189,000, down from some 5.2 million in the 1980s. According to Dr. Kalani Brady, longtime physician to patients in the Hansen’s disease settlement of Kalaupapa on Molokai, and a member of the faculty of the John A. Burns School of Medicine / Department of Native Hawaiian Health, there were over 800,000 new cases of leprosy worldwide, with most new cases occurring in 16 countries, with India accounting for more than half. In the past 20 years, 16 million people worldwide have been cured of leprosy. Separating people by placing them in so-called “leper colonies” still occurs in places such as India, China, and Africa. However, most such colonies in other countries have closed. Social stigma has been associated with leprosy for much of history, which continues to be a barrier to self-reporting and early treatment. Some consider the word “leper” offensive, preferring the phrase “person affected with leprosy”. In the case of the late Hawai’i born author and social activist Olivia Robello Breitha, the subject of “Shipment Day”, she emphatically stated her feelings about the word. “Call me by my name, Olivia, not by my condition.” Today, the remaining Hansen’s Disease patients in Hawaii live at Kalaupapa, at Leahi Hospital in Honolulu, and in private residences.

20 • Manoa Valley Theatre • Shipment Day Olivia Robello Breitha

Olivia Robello was born in 1916 on the island of Kauai to Portuguese immigrant parents from the Azores, six hundred miles off the coast of Portugal. She grew up in a tight- knit, hard-working community where family pride and the magnetic pull of assimilation often clashed. People kept anything potentially embarrassing locked tightly in the closet. If word ever got out that someone in the family had contracted such a dreaded disease as leprosy it would have a serious effect on their social standing, the way they were treated at work, at school, even in church. Olivia has been gone from here since September 28, 2006. Her lifelong struggle with authority is over. But her mission to have us remember the more than 8,000 people who lived and died in Kalaupapa continues. For those who spent time with her over the years, as family and as part of her large network of friends, knowing this lady was a blessing. To Lorenzo DeStefano she was not merely a found relative. She was a complex woman who fully lived the life that was dealt to her, all 90 years of it. Through her own thoughts and words, which are woven into the script of “Shipment Day”, you will discover that Olivia was not one to succumb to life’s difficulties. She met every challenge head on, the small and the immense. Instead of destroying her they transformed Olivia Robello Breitha into the powerfully eloquent social activist she was always meant to be.
