SUK* The Nineteenth Amendment’s ratification in 1920 spawned new initiatives to advance the status of women, including the proposal of another constitutional amendment that would guarantee women equality in all legal rights, beyond the right to vote. Both the Nineteenth Amendment and the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) grew out of the long quest to enshrine women’s equal status under the law as citizens, which began in the nineteenth century. Nearly a century later, the ERA remains unfinished business with an uncertain future. Suffragists advanced different visions and strategies for women’s empowerment after they got the constitutional right to vote. They divided over the ERA. Their disagreements, this Essay argues, productively postponed the ERA, and reshaped its meaning over time to be more responsive to the challenges women faced in exercising economic and political power because they were mothers.     Volume 37 Issue 4 July/August 2021 Ten Thousand Feet for Freedom Leslie Blankenship, Local Historian ugust 26 is “Woman’s Equality Day.” On that date in 1920 the 19th Amendment was certified, and many women in the United States finally achieved the constitutional right to vote as a fundamental componentA of their citizenship. On June 16, 1919, Ohio was the fifth state to ratify the amendment. Voting rights were granted to American Indians and Asian Americans when they became citizens through acts of Congress in 1924 (Snyder Act) and 1952 (McCarren-Walter Act), respectively. African Americans in the South had to wait until 1965 when the federal Voting Rights Act abolished all manner of Jim Crow voting restrictions. Another date, August 27, 1912, cherished by Ohio woman suffrage advocates, is little remembered today. On that Tuesday morning, thousands of women gathered in Columbus to march in the state’s first suffrage parade. It was a compelling display of street theater with equal parts beauty, solidarity, and resolve that dazzled its audience, changed some minds, and earned grudging respect for the marchers’ cause. In 1911, Ohio was at a watershed moment. Fed up with the consequences of corrupt boss-dominated municipal governments and of a General Assembly in thrall to the excesses of Big Business, Ohio men voted to convene a Constitutional Convention to remedy these abuses.     CENTENNIAL OF WOMEN’S SUFFRAGE PATCH PROGRAM In this patch program, girls will gain knowledge about the history of voting and the importance of voting today. Leadership, advocacy, and civic responsibility are essential parts of the Girl Scout program. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th amendment, which gave women the right to vote. After a decades-long fight, and even with the passage of this amendment, many women still experienced discrimination. To earn this patch, Daisies/Brownies must do one activity from each section, plus one additional activity. Juniors must do two activities from each section, plus one additional activity. Cadettes/Seniors/Ambassadors must do one activity from each section, plus two additional activities of your choice. You can purchase this patch from any GSSEM council shop during working hours and while patches are available. The deadline to complete this patch is December 31, 2020. Discover What does suffrage mean? What's the difference between suffragist vs suffragette? Michigan was home to prominent suffragists such as Sojourner Truth, Anna Howard Shaw, Clara Arthur, and Lucia Voorhees Grimes. Many other suffragists were incarcerated for their actions. Clark) ABSTRACT The women’s suffrage movement in Georgia consisted of a small but spirited group of women who unsuccessfully fought for enfranchisement from 1895 to 1920. Suffragists publicly pushed for change while maintaining that their enfranchisement would actually shore up existing power structures, especially white supremacy; however, their very existence in politics and public space symbolized the disorder that many southerners had used to characterize the changes wrought by industrialization and modernization in Georgia. While comprehensive studies on this subject have been limited, this thesis also benefits from seminal regional and transnational studies that have inspired more theoretical perspectives on this topic and illuminated the complex forces that impacted Georgia’s suffragists in their battle for the ballot.     Historical Overview of the National Woman’s Party Origins in the NAWSA Congressional Committee The origins of the National Woman's Party (NWP) date from December 1912, when Alice Paul (1885-1977) and Lucy Burns (1879-1966) were appointed to the National American Woman Suffrage Association’s (NAWSA) languishing Congressional Committee. Paul and Burns were young, well-educated Americans who worked with Emmeline and Christabel Pankhurst in the militant wing of the British suffrage movement. Radicalized by their experiences in England–which included violent confrontations with authorities, jail sentences, hunger strikes, and force-feedings–they sought to inject a renewed militancy into the American campaign. They also endeavored to shift NAWSA’s attention away from winning voting rights for women at the state and local levels to securing an amendment to the U.S. Constitution to enfranchise women nationally. Their first activity on NAWSA’s behalf was to organize a massive national suffrage parade in Washington, D.C., in March 1913. This parade was modeled on the elaborate suffrage pageants held in Britain and local marches organized in New York by the Women’s Political Union (WPU) and its leader Harriot Stanton Blatch (1856-1940). Blatch, the daughter of Elizabeth Cady Stanton (1815-1902), married an Englishman and became active in the militant British suffrage campaign.
