PRIMAVERA PRO 2018

Centre de Cultura Contemporània de (CCCB) Parc del Fòrum -

From 30th May to 3rd June of 2018

“What we want are heads of state that make cool playlists”. “Rights, like the freedom of speech, are a question of class”. Two sentences. The first, is apparently frivolous (or is it?), was uttered by . The other by Elgio, former member of La Insurgencia who was condemned to two years and one day of prison for verses that the High Court considered incitement to terrorism.

Both sentences have one thing in common: they were said in the framework of Primavera Pro 2018 and, in some way, they represent everything that normally would not be part of a professional meeting: entertaining wit, and the denunciation of deplorable situations. Primavera Pro is the place to hold a round table on how to tour in the Asia market, followed by a session to thrash out how can help musicians. Where one can learn how to get a track on a successful playlist by Justin Barker from [PIAS], and later the opportunity to listen to the journalist Liz Pelly revealing the sexist stereotypes that are hidden behind an apparently inoffensive

1 algorithm on a streaming platform. A place where you can discover the unusual chemistry between the well-known Father John Misty and filmmaker Adam Curtis, and to find out what the has in store for the new generations of professionals in the music sector. Somewhere where you can listen to the producer John Congleton defending “timeless” music as opposed to a “perfect” sound, or where you can have a laugh listening to the vision that Los Planetas have today of their toxic glory, which is twenty years old already, Una semana en el motor de un autobús. A place where you can accompany on his journey through his favourite musical moments in cinema, and see how Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein have gone from cult band to pop phenomenon thanks to the soundtrack for Stranger Things. And it is a space in which you can express your outrage about a legal system that suffocates art and protest with Elgio, the lawyer Laia Serra, Dani Vilaró from Amnistía Internacional, and the journalist Bruno Sokolowicz.

Or to explore the relationship between music and image at the activities of Primavera Pro On-Screen, which this year were sponsored by EMI Production Music and Thirty-Two Music, take the pulse of the congress of independent labels and the congress of concert venues, delve into the minds of the women of generation Z via sessions organized by CultHunting WomenZ, or see how technology can influence the music industry, thanks to the talks and pitches by Primavera Pro Startups, that awarded their prize to Roadie Tuner, a tool that allows one to tune guitars automatically and with great precision.

And of course, it is a place to applaud the association of Mujeres de la Industria de la Música, presented with the Primavera Award for their efforts to dynamite all gender inequality in the music sector. The feminist discourse was also very much present on the stages: 54% of the showcases from the five continents had female members and in many cases they were frontwomen or solo artists. This is one of the most significant figures of the ninth edition of Primavera Pro, that has brought together over 3.000 accredited professionals from almost 70 different countries.

Music and municipalism: public protection and promotion of diversity policies at a local level

One year before celebrating the next municipal elections, at Primavera Pro an evaluation has been made of the policies developed in different Spanish cities regarding the music sector. The municipal actions of local authorities in coordination with the different agents from the sector allow the transformation of elements that go from the regulation of the performing of music in public places and venues, to the promotion of a local business network. This panel had two objectives: on the one hand, to introduce a series of “good practices” driven by the cities represented -Valencia, Barcelona, Madrid and Bilbao- with regard to musical diversity and on the other, to reflect on and debate the role of “the local” with regard to music in a context of growing globalization.

Speakers: Daniel Granados (ICUB/Cultura Viva), Getsemaní de San Marcos (Ayuntamiento de Madrid), Vicent Ros (Palau de la Música) Moderators: Ignacio Gallego and Luis A. Albornoz (Máster en Industria Musical y Estudios Sonoros - UC3M)

The streaming status quo and what you can do about it

On the face of it, streaming should have been a great leveller for the music business, moving consumptions away from the dominion of industry gatekeepers into a space where vast catalogues are available on an equal basis, just one click away. In practice, though, things have turned out very differently: journalist Liz Pelly recently gave a presentation in which she highlighted the gender bias on the most popular playlists, arguing that the echo chamber effect of data-driven discovery amplifies pre-existing gender inequities. Pelly chaired this panel, which looked at how the streaming world upholds and exacerbates aspects of the music industry status quo and examined how independent artists and fans can navigate this new world.

Speakers: Cherie Hu (Journalist), Fernando Delgado (PIAS) Moderator: Liz Pelly

When rapping is a crime: the freedom of expression, under threat in Spain Free entrance. Preference for Primavera Pro accreditation holders.

It is more than likely that when Pablo Hásel, Valtonyc and the collective La Insurgencia wrote their inflammatory rhymes, they aimed to cause a stink and stir things up. However they would never have imagined that they would be convicted for insulting the Crown and glorifying terrorism.

Primavera Pro has followed the cases of these musicians with apprehension. That is why it was considered necessary to organise this panel in collaboration with Amnesty International that examined the legal reasons behind this anomalous situation, analysing if these facts are symptomatic of a democratic regression.

Speakers: Dani Vilaró (Amnesty International), Laia Serra (lawyer), Elgio (ex-La Insurgencia) Moderator: Bruno Sokolowicz

21 Los Planetas celebrate twenty years of Una semana en el motor de un autobús Free entrance. Preference for Primavera Pro accreditation holders.

On April 13th 1998 Los Planetas released Una semana en el motor de un autobús, and indie in Spain came of age. It was a rapid growth, like that which follows a high temperature (it was not by chance that the creative process surrounding the was turbulent). Songs like Segundo premio, La playa and La copa de Europa have an unparalleled electric density and emotional depth, plunging their authors and a whole generation of listeners into a personal and existential crisis lived as an epic experience.

Una semana en el motor de un autobús was record of the year in the most prestigious magazines and is still today an unavoidable reference when talking about the Spanish scene of that time. It has been re-released in several formats and there is even a book about it. In 2013, coinciding with its fifteenth anniversary, Los Planetas performed it in its entirety at Primavera Sound. It seemed almost impossible to find another perspective from which to explore the album, but in 2018 the band has found another angle from which to explore its world: Jota and Florent will sit with personalities from the world of culture to talk in public and in an intimate format about what the album meant and means. A journey of seven days that has already lasted twenty years, narrated in a series of exclusive talks that had their world premiere at Primavera Pro, with two very special guests: artist Pedro G. Romero, and Santi Carrillo, director of the music magazine Rockdelux.

Speakers: Jota y Florent (Los Planetas), Pedro G. Romero (artist) Moderator: Santi Carrillo (Rockdelux)

Understanding popular songs: Poetry or transmedia phenomenon

Since the emergence of pop music in the fifties, words have been commonly considered as the communicative and signifying facet of the song. This means that the discursive analysis is limited to this aspect, determining social and cultural aspects through the lyrics. It is, however, essential to pay attention to the innate qualities of the voice in music, such as the intonation or the tenor. This is the only way that we will be able to appreciate the poetry of the peculiarities of music effectively.

The third edition of the programme Primavera Pro On-Screen was backed by EMI Production Music and the music supervision agency Thirty Two Music. This alliance examined practical cases in order to reveal all the secrets of the synchronisation and selection of music for advertising and audiovisual work. Besides this Sync Day, Primavera Pro On-Screen welcomed some outstanding artists, who discussed the links between images and music.

Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein in conversation with Jlin

“Every synth has a magical power - you can basically create the sound you’re thinking of, or you can just goof around with it and come across something that inspires you. So it feeds you and you feed it and just have this interaction with the instrument. It’s like a nourishment.” says Kyle Dixon, member of the band S U R V I V E together with Michael Stein, with whom he has also composed the soundtrack of the series Stranger Things. Its main theme, which is barely a minute long and which won an Emmy, is enough to trigger a series of very deep musical, cinematographic and emotional memories in the listeners’ minds.

Jerrylinn Patton, aka Jlin, has made a name for herself with her visionary approach to the genre, culminating with last year’s outstanding Black Origami. When it comes to sync, she’s also a sought after name: in 2014, Designer Rick Owens commissioned Jlin to create the soundtrack for his Fall/Winter 2014/2015 runway show at Paris Fashion Week. The following year, Patton made the beats for the Adidas Originals Spring/Summer presentation also in Paris as well as a Chanel show in Seoul.

Delving into innumerable audiovisual archives (coming, in large part, from the BBC), Adam Curtis perfects the art of resignification of images and sounds, giving us brilliant film essays such as Century of the Self, Bitter Lake and HyperNormalisation. Music plays a fundamental part in Curtis’s method, as the director fragments all kind of modern songs - from trash pop to Burial and - to help create a new kind of political journalism, that has inspired in turn many in the music world. One of these artists is Josh Tillman, the man behind Father John Misty, who interviewed Curtis at Primavera Pro On-Screen in an unique meeting between two personalities who share an exhilarating mental agility and a very sharp discourse.

Speakers: Adam Curtis (BBC), Josh Tillman (Artist)

Building a self-sovereign identity based on blockchain

“Self-sovereign identity” is the concept that defines how people and businesses can store their own identity data on their own devices, and provide it efficiently to those who need to validate it, without relying on a central repository of identity data. It’s a digital way of doing what we do today with bits of paper. Who are you? And who decides you’re really you and can be trusted? The answer, and the systems involved, differs in the real world and online. But blockchain technology could make establishing identity and trust much easier for everyone.

Music Moves Europe: the future of funding for the sector at EU level

Accounting for 1 million jobs and over 25 billion in turnover, the music sector is one of the most dynamic cultural and creative sectors in Europe. A potential that can be fully unleashed in the coming years in the next generation of funding programme the EU will carry out after 2020.

This is the subject of “Music Moves Europe”: launched by the European Commission in 2016, this initiative first aimed at discussing the main challenges of the sector during a series of meetings with representatives of the industry from festivals, record labels, live venues, music export offices to artists, publishers, composers and digital services. Two years later, the European Parliament has consecutively released funds to test suitable ideas and actions that could materialize in a targeted funding envelope for the music sector by 2021. In other terms, this is a pivotal point for the sector; as such a fully-fledged programme could considerably boost European music’s competitiveness, diversity and talent.

This panel gave representatives of the European music industry, as well as delegated from the European institutions an open platform to discuss future strategies and developments of music funding on a European level.

Or from Amsterdam where the authorities actively collaborated with to render their urban landscape more attractive?
