I argue that the tragicomedy allows for a nuanced portrayal of queer identity because it recognizes the systemic and personal “tragedies” faced by LGBTQ people (discrimination, inadequate legal protection, familial exile, the AIDS epidemic, et cetera), but also acknowledges that even in struggle, in real life and in art, there is humor and comedy. I contend that the contemporary tragicomedy works to depart from the dominant late-nineteenth and twentieth-century trope of queer people as either tragic figures (sick, suicidal, self-loathing) or comedic relief characters by showing complex characters that experience both tragedy and comedy and are themselves both serious and humorous. Building off Verna A. Foster’s 2004 book The Name and Nature of Tragicomedy, I argue that contemporary examples of the tragicomedy share generic characteristics with tragicomedies from previous eras (most notably the Renaissance and modern period), but have also evolved in important ways to work for queer authors. The contemporary tragicomedy, as used by queer authors, mixes comedy and tragedy throughout the text but ultimately ends in “comedy” (meaning the characters survive the tragedies in the text and are optimistic for the future).

    Father John Misty – “God’s Favorite Customer” The artist behind the ego: Josh Tillman, mostly known by his performance nom de guerre Father John Misty, is a Maryland born indie folk/rock singer; although he began his musical career as a drummer playing for minor indie bands like Saxon Shore while working in a bakery for a day job. He was born in an evangelical household and was very religious during his youth, something he resented his parents for when he grew up. While working as a drummer, he wrote music for himself in his free time. He attended a private Christian college but dropped out as he felt more comfortable in his music career. Through touring, he made connections with other artists and his demos made their way to Damien Jurado, a fellow Sub Pop artist. He would then go on to open for Jurado. In 2006, he had his first studio album released under the moniker J. Tillman. He then went on to produce four more albums (eight in total), with the last one being released in 2010. During his J. Tillman years, a lot of the music he made was very folk and has joked about the music he made being “sad bastard music.” He found very little success doing folk albums. During this time as J. Tillman, he joined the indie band Fleet Foxes as the drummer. In an interview with Rolling Stone, he stated that, “With Fleet Foxes I had to confront a certain sacred cow in my life, which was the idea that if I was in a popular band, if I just get to be a working musician, then that’s going to be the antidote for all the boredom and pain in my life.

    Villages Upon the Horizon (EP) When the four members of Villages established the band in 2016, it was with the goal of writing original songs in the spirit of the traditional music of their home region, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. But from that simple foundation, the sound of Villages has consistently expanded into what is now a dazzling combination of indie folk and experimental pop, with dashes of sun-bleached psychedelia added for good measure. The band’s new EP Upon the Horizon - a taste of their next full-length album due in 2021 - is their most dynamic and exploratory work yet, recorded at New Scotland Yard studio in Dartmouth, just after Nova Scotia lifted social distancing rules in July 2020. But what makes Upon the Horizon stand apart from Villages’ past efforts is its mix done by American indie rock legend Phil Ek (Fleet Foxes, Modest Mouse, Built to Spill, The Shins, Father John Misty, Band of Horses). For Matt Ellis, Travis Ellis, Jon Pearo and Archie Rankin, it was not only an honour to work with one of their heroes, but a validation of their distinctive musical approach. Travis Ellis explains, “Back before we mixed our first record, I threw a bit of a Hail Mary and reached out to Phil to gauge his interest. He was into it but the timing just didn’t work out then. Music videos have affected aesthetic style in a wide range of film and television genres, introducing experimental and avant-garde techniques to a mass audience. Because most music videos last only a few minutes, it is difficult to make sense of their often-conflicting images, sounds, and messages. This course challenges participants to read music videos as texts by engaging with their visual and auditory materials. We will explore how the gender, race, and class of video participants shapes meaning, as well as how pacing and editing contribute to (or detract from) a narrative flow. We will also consider the music video in relation to notions of stardom and celebrity, and will speculate on the future of the music video amid drastic changes in the production and marketing of media. The second portion of the course applies these analytical skills to a wide variety of media, including video games, live concert films, film and television music placements, television title sequences and end credits, user generated content, YouTube, remixes and more.     GABE NOEL STRINGS / COMPOSER / COLLABORATOR Gabe Noel is a Los Angeles based musician lurking in the background of hundreds of records, film scores, video games, world tours, and sound designs. As a bassist, cellist, and composer, he has recorded on albums ranging from Kendrick Lamar to Ry Cooder and has written cues for film and TV including Twilight, True Detective and most recently composed the music for Kim Farrant’s new film Angel of Mine (2019). As a featured performer, Gabe's funky bass can be heard throughout Rockstar Games’ video game series, Grand Theft Auto, and his ethereal sound has influenced scores such as Diana, Devil’s Gate, and upcoming thriller The Dinner. Gabe is also an accomplished arranger whose orchestrations can be heard on Father John Misty’s breakout album Fear Fun, and it's critically acclaimed follow-up I Love You, Honeybear. Gabe’s sound is varied and diverse as his interests. He is equally at home across all genres. Though primarily a bassist and cellist, he uses additional instruments to craft his unique textures—from lap steel to modular synths, manipulated folk string instruments to processing software. Gabe has recorded, toured, and performed with a wide range of artists since beginning his professional career.
