The Socioeconomics of State Formation in Medieval Afghanistan George Fiske Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2012 © 2012 George Fiske All rights reserved ABSTRACT The Socioeconomics of State Formation in Medieval Afghanistan George Fiske This study examines the socioeconomics of state formation in medieval Afghanistan in historical and historiographic terms. It outlines the thousand year history of Ghaznavid historiography by treating primary and secondary sources as a continuum of perspectives, demonstrating the persistent problems of dynastic and political thinking across periods and cultures. It conceptualizes the geography of Ghaznavid origins by framing their rise within specific landscapes and histories of state formation, favoring time over space as much as possible and reintegrating their experience with the general histories of Iran, Central Asia, and India. Once the grand narrative is illustrated, the scope narrows to the dual process of monetization and urbanization in Samanid territory in order to approach Ghaznavid obstacles to state formation. The socioeconomic narrative then shifts to political and military specifics to demythologize the rise of the Ghaznavids in terms of the framing contexts described in the previous chapters. Finally, the study specifies the exact combination of culture and history which the Ghaznavids exemplified to show their particular and universal character and suggest future paths for research. 246 chapter twelve CHAPTER TWELVE SALLAM’S HOMEWARD JOURNEY: YUMENGUAN–SAMARRA (CA. DECEMBER 843/JANUARY 844– DECEMBER 844/JANUARY 845) 1. Sallam’s itinerary All versions of Sallam’s journey (except that of Yaqut) say that the homeward journey took twelve months and a couple of days. According to Ibn Khurradadhbih’s version, it led from the barrier of ‘the two-horned one’ to al-Lub, to the principality of the ruler of Tabanuyan, and further to Isfijab–Usrushana–Samarkand–Bukhara– Tirmidh–Nishapur–Rayy and finally Samarra. This sequence will be discussed below. al-Idrisi’s version gives four other names of places by which Sallam is said to have passed on his way home: Lakhman, Ghuriyan, Barsakhan and Taraz. They are found on the highway from China to Tashkent and were probably mentioned in al-Jayhani’s lost work. According to al-Idrisi, the guides who were to lead Sallam from the barrier, possibly Yumenguan, to Khurasan, were taken from among the inhabitants of the fortresses near the barrier. If the latter can be identified with Yumenguan, the direct route to Khurasan from there was the southern branch of the Silk Road to Kashgar and the Farghana valley. However, al-Lub, mentioned as the first stage after the barrier, probably stands for Lop (Nor).127 In that case Sallam, upon leaving Yumenguan, did not return to Igu but embarked at the Jade Gate upon the Loulan route to Lop Nor. The First Attempt to Interpret the Bugut Brāhmī Inscription
GROPING IN THE DARK: THE FIRST ATTEMPT TO INTERPRET THE BUGUT BRĀHMĪ INSCRIPTION ALEXaNDER VOvIN EHESS/CRLAO, PaRIs To the Great Master of all Central Asian Scripts, Dieter Maue, who continues to inspire us all. Abstract This article is a sequel to the interpretation of the Khüis Tolgoi inscription published in the previous issue of the Journal Asiatique. The Bugut inscription is at least twenty years older than the Khüis Tolgoi inscription, being probably erected in 584 AD but no later than 587 AD. It is a quasi-builingual, with two inscriptions on the same stone: Sogdian that has been extensively studied before by Kliashtornyi, Livshits, and Yoshida, and the inscription in Brāhmī, that has not been properly studied before (only wild speculations regrding the identity of its language without any attempt to discuss the data have been published so far). Based on Dieter Maue’s reading, which was greatly facilitated by 3D photography, I was able to interpret the inscription and to establish the identity of its language, which turned out to be essentially the same as the language of the Khüis Tolgoi inscription: an early Mongolic language, quite closely related to the Middle Mongolian of the thirteenth-fourteenth century in spite of 600 years that separate them. This discovery has many important consequences for linguistic history and history of Central Asia, among which the most important are: first, the fact that the oldest language on the steppe of the “Ataic” type is Mongolic, and not Turkic, and second that this Mongolic language was the official language of the first Turkic khaganate, which in its turn explains why we have no inscriptions in Old Turkic before the second khaganate. -

In the religious beliefs of the Huns and the ancient Turks totemism occupied an important place. Totemism - is the most ancient form of religion. The first gods were certain animals. As you know, the cult of animals originated in ancient times, when “primitive” man had not yet separated himself from the nature and all tribal relations, and ancient man identified himself with the animal world. Image of the wolf is one of the most significant symbols of animals of different peoples of the world. In many cultures, it plays a special role, it is a huge cult and carries ritual and social values. In the myths, folklore and fairy tales wolf symbolizes ferocity, cunning, cruelty, evil, but also courage and victory. In addition, under certain circumstances, the wolf could be a powerful protector of the helpless creatures. Common to many mythologies of Eurasia is a story about the founder of the tribe (and sometimes his twin) that was parented by she-wolf. -
The Silk Road and Trans-Eurasian Exchange
The Road That Never Was: The Silk Road and Trans- Eurasian Exchange Khodadad Rezakhani he Silk Road, or Silk Route, is a name used today to refer to a supposed trade route of ancient Eurasia, its use bringing different images to mind. These are often of camel caravans on dusty roads, forbidding deserts, and exotic towns and “oases.” The con- cept as a whole tends to ignore realities such as geography and ecology, as well as political units, facts that become lost among the more potent romantic notions. While itineraries are presented at some length, actual places are forgotten, and it is supposed that a conventional “beginning” in China and a vague “destination” somewhere along the Mediterranean are enough. On the way, places such as Transoxiana, the Pamirs, Iran, and indeed the whole of the Near East are simply brushed aside and not much discussed. The Silk Road has then be- come a grand narrative that serves mostly to obscure important details and sometimes even more. As one modern historian similarly opposed to the idea of the Silk Road has suggested, “‘The Silk road’ now has become both band wagon and gravy train, with an endless stream of books, journals, conferences and international exhibitions devoted to it, reaching virtual mania proportions that is almost unstoppable.” 1 This is why I am suggesting not only that the concept of a continuous, purpose- driven road or even “routes” is counterproductive in the study of world history but also that it has no basis in historical reality or records. Doing away with the whole concept of the “Silk Road” of might do us, at least as historians, a world of good and actually let us study what in reality Studies was going on in the region.
