RE: Exterior Rehabilitation of the C&O Canal Visitor Center

Dear Mr. Luebke,

The National Park Service requests concept review of the proposed exterior rehabilitations to the C&O Canal Visitor Center at the Old Georgetown Board’s November 2019 meeting.

This project will address long term deferred maintenance at the Georgetown Visitor Center, located at 1057 Thomas Jefferson Street, NW. The existing paint will be removed from the exterior brick and deteriorated mortar joints will be re-pointed. The bracketed cornices above the bay window and at the top of the front façade will be repaired or replaced as needed and a new door surround with transom will be installed to be in keeping with the design of the original entry treatments on nearby structures. Doors and windows will be repaired and/or replaced in kind. Miscellaneous repairs will also be made to the gutters and downspouts and the grading adjacent to the structure will be slightly adjusted to direct water away from the building.
