Recently, I participated in a civil rights trip to Atlanta, Montgomery and Selma. Many things impressed me but nothing left as lasting an impression as Selma and

the activists from the 50s and 60s whom I met there. Of course, there had to be a movement before Dr. King came and marched with John Lewis across the Edmund-Pettus-Bridge on their way to Montgomery.

The bridge stands and is supported by funds as an important part of American history. Most other parts of Selma are falling apart and the town gives a sad and dilapidated impression. Not only is there a synagogue, temple Mishkan Israel (more than 100 years old) but another building that gives witness to the fact that the Jewish community was intricately involved in the voting rights struggle in Selma.
