www.freedomhouse.org Freedom in the Americas Today This series of charts and graphs tracks freedoms trajectory in the Americas over the past thirty years. The source for the material in subsequent pages is two global surveys published annually by Freedom House: Freedom in the World and Freedom of the Press. Freedom in the World has assessed the condition of world freedom since 1972, providing separate numerical scores for each countrys degree of political rights and civil liberties as well as designating countries as free, partly free, and not free. Freedom of the Press assesses the level of media freedom in each country in the world and designates countries as free, partly free, and not free. The graphs and charts in this package tell a story that is both encouraging and a source of concern. When Freedom House launched its global index of political rights and civil liberties, freedom was on the defensive throughout much of the Americas. Juntas, military councils, and strongmen held the reins of power throughout much of south and Central America. At various times dictatorships prevailed in such key countries as Brazil, Argentina, Peru, and Chile, as well as in every country of Central America except Costa Rica. Latin America was not alone in the grim picture it presented as democracy was by and large restricted to the countries of Western Europe and North America. Conditions in the Americas were strongly influenced by the Cold War. Marxist insurgencies, often employing kidnappings, assassinations, and terrorism, had emerged in a number of countries; military governments responded with extreme brutality, including the use of paramilitary death squads. -

As European democrats, how can we listen to and talk to the voters of such parties, while staying strong on our values? What is an Eurosceptic? • A person who is opposed to increasing the powers of the European Union. (OED) • European political doctrine that advocates disengagement from the European Union (EU). Political parties that espouse a Euroskeptic viewpoint tend to be broadly populist and generally support tighter immigration controls in addition to the dismantling or streamlining of the EU bureaucratic structure. International Journal of Communication 12(2018), 3553–3579 1932–8036/20180005 Lega Nord and Anti-Immigrationism: The Importance of Hegemony Critique for Social Media Analysis and Protest CINZIA PADOVANI1 Southern Illinois University Carbondale, USA In this study, I implement Antonio Gramsci’s hegemony critique to analyze the anti- immigration rhetoric promoted by the Italian ultraright party Lega Nord [Northern League]. Specifically, this case study focuses on the discourse that developed on the microblogging site Twitter during the Stop Invasione [Stop Invasion] rally, organized by Matteo Salvini’s party on October 18, 2014, in Milan. I argue that hegemony critique is helpful to investigate political discourse on social media and to theorize the struggle surrounding contentious topics such as immigration. The method, which is multilayered and includes content analysis and interpretative analysis, allows for the exploration of a considerable data corpus but also an in-depth reading of each tweet. The result is a nuanced understanding of the anti-immigration discourse and of the discourse that developed in favor of immigration and in support of a countermarch, which progressive movements organized in response to Lega’s mobilization on the same day in Milan. Furdek, Purdue University Calumet, USA ABSTRACT On October 10, 2007, the UAW membership ratified a landmark, 456-page labor agreement with General Motors. Following pattern bargaining, the UAW also reached agreement with Chrysler LLC and then Ford Motor Company. This paper will examine the major provisions of these groundbreaking labor agreements, including the creation of the Voluntary Employee Beneficiary Association (VEBA), the establishment of a two tier wage structure for newly hired workers, the job security provisions, the new wage package for hourly workers, and the shift to defined contribution plans for new hires. The paper will also provide an economic analysis of these labor agreements to consider both if the “Big Three” automakers can remain competitive in the global market and what will be their impact on the UAW and its membership. Keywords: UAW, 2007 Negotiations, Labor Contracts BACKGROUND he 2007 labor negotiations among the Big Three automakers (General Motors, Chrysler LLC, and Ford Motor) and the United Autoworkers (UAW) proved to be historic, as well as controversial as they sought mutually to agree upon labor contracts that would “usher in a new era for the auto Tindustry.” Both parties realized the significance of attaining these groundbreaking labor agreements, in order for the American auto industry to survive and compete successfully in the global economy. For the UAW, with its declining membership of approximately 520,000, that once topped 1.5 million members, a commitment from the Big Three automakers for product investments to protect jobs and a new health care trust fund were major goals. -

The invariance proposition is revisited with adaptations for win- maximizing sportsman owners facing an uncertain Champions League prize. Sportsman and champion effects have driven European football clubs to the edge of insolvency and polarized competition throughout Europe. Revenue revolutions and financial crises of the Big Five leagues are examined and estimates of competitive balance are compared. The European Super League completes the open-market solution after Bosman. A 30-team Super League is proposed based on the National Football League. In football everything is complicated by the presence of the opposite team. FSartre I Introduction The beauty of the world’s game of football lies in the dynamic balance of symbiotic competition. Since the English Premier League (EPL) broke away from the Football League in 1992, the EPL has effectively lost its competitive balance. The rebellion of the EPL coincided with a deeper media revolution as digital and pay-per-view technologies were delivered by satellite platform into the commercial television vacuum created by public television monopolies throughout Europe. EPL broadcast revenues have exploded 40-fold from h22 million in 1992 to h862 million in 2005 (33% CAGR). -

Jean Pisani-Ferry By attending the meeting of ministers of the euro area on Monday 9 July Nicolas Sarkozy was above all making a political statement. This was a 'first', after a decade in which heads of state and government of the euro area have been conspicuous by their absence. They have never met in a euro context, not even at the birth of their common currency. Having taken a momentous decision, they promptly left implementation of the euro to financial technicians. By going to the Eurogroup, Nicolas Sarkozy clearly intended to mark the end of this long absence. Beyond the symbolism, however, Europe was curious as to his motives and many are worried. Criticised for a fiscal policy which has departed from the agreed objective, was the President of France seeking the consent of partner countries to this departure? Was he launching an offensive designed to dilute the independence of the European Central Bank? And what is this 'economic government' which all the French leaders are calling for but none has pinned down exactly? Few Frenchmen realise the extent to which the ideas they share may appear odd to their partners. The reason for this is that the euro means different things to different peoples. For some, for example the Netherlands and Austria, it allowed a belated ceding of a sovereignty perceived as existing in name only. They see monetary union as a necessary framework for national economic policy – a little like the gold standard underpinned disciplines in the 19th century without implying political affiliation. -

Introduction Many commenters hailed the decision to establish a new EU “recovery fund”, namely “Next Generation EU” (NGEU), as a turning point in the process of European integration. For the first time in its history, the Union will be allowed to borrow significant resources from the financial markets and use them to support national economies severely hit by the pandemic Covid-19. Course Information ● Tuesdays 9:00 – 12:00 ● Location: Room 303 ● Prerequisites: none Course Overview and Goals The European Union constitutes the most prominent experiment in peaceful international cooperation in world history. The course will explore the origins, evolution and impact of the European Union. You will be introduced to the workings of the EU institutions such as the Council, the Commission, the Parliament and the Court of Justice. We will also explore the key areas of EU competence, such as the European Single Currency, the Single Market and free movement, asylum & immigration, the Common Agricultural Policy etc. Through small group debates, we will address questions such as: Is the European Union an economic giant but a political dwarf? Why is the EU so controversial among the European public? Why did the UK vote for Brexit and what will that mean for both Britain and the EU? Can the EU effectively manage immigration? How can the EU's institutions be made more democratic? Will the EURO survive? How far and how fast should the EU be enlarged? Will Europe develop into a federal (super) state? Course delivery will be through short lectures, small group discussions and in-class debates. Upon Completion of this Course, students will be able to critically analyze: ● the European integration process; ● the operation of the EU as a political system; ● the process of EU policy-making; ● and the EU’s role in the world.
