He worked as a landscape architect for | ten years before deciding to go back to school for a master’s Visually degree in landscape architecture. He plans to continue working in private practice as well as teach. La Misíon de la Sénora Bárbara, Vírgen y Martír Explored Mission Santa Barbara | Visually Explored Visual imagery is very powerful to how we learn, remember and communicate. Images remain in our Michael A. Sánchez, 2010 psyche long after words have fallen silent and return as helpful references at a later date. This project is Submitted to the UNIVERSITY OF OREGON, Department of Landscape Architecture, College of Architecture and the Allied Arts not a typical historical analysis of the landscape of Mission Santa Barbara, nor a detailed historic rendering of the beautiful architecture and surrounding landscape. Nor is this merely a literary compilation. This project is a unique perspective between all of the professionals that tell stories of the missions – architects, landscape architects, planners, artists, historians, archeologists, anthropologists, Padres, tourists, etc. – and is woven into a product rich in illustrations and backed by interesting facts and sources. This project illustrates elements of the mission that most people might not see from a typical tourist viewpoint. This visual essay communicates the rich history of this influential place in a way that more fully demonstrates the fascinating elements of this mission’s systems and strives to lead the reader to a greater appreciation of this place that is part building, part garden, part lore.

  • Wine Industry in Argentina Unique Terroir + Tradition + Freedom to Innovate = Extraordinary Wines to Meet Global Market Needs Photo: Carlos Calise
INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITIES Wine Industry in Argentina Unique Terroir + Tradition + Freedom to Innovate = Extraordinary wines to meet global market needs Photo: Carlos Calise. Courtesy of Wines of Argentina Highlights >> A GLOBAL OPPORTUNITY The international wine market has continued to develop over the years. Consumers have become increasingly sophisticated and enthusiastic about new varieties and fl avors. World consumption is expected to grow 6% over the period 2008-2012, driven by new consumers in high potential markets such as the United States, China, United Kingdom, Russia, Brazil and Japan. In world markets, the so-called New World producers are coming on strong with a growing share of global exports. In this context, Argentina has a unique opportunity being both part of the New World as a key wine exporter in the global market and of the Old World thanks to its long-term tradition in wine production. Argentina combines terroir, expertise and freedom to innovate and is rapidly unleashing all its potential to meet global market needs. >> GROWTH POTENTIAL The Argentine wine industry was transformed during the past decade. Growth and modernization positioned the country as a key global player. Today it is both one of the largest domestic markets and one of the main global exporters. But it is poised for more: wine exports grew 29.0% in 2008 alone. Dynamic players and innovation continue to improve the industry’s prospects, yielding endless possibilities along the way. During the fi rst four months of 2009 glass-bottled wine exports continued to increase and were up 8.7% in volume notwithstanding the global economic downturn.

  • History in the Vines: Fremont's Wine Legacy
History in the Vines: Fremont’s Wine Legacy “There is no more important vineyard district in California, all things considered, than that which lies around the old Mission San Jose. …The best wine vineyards are around the Mission and Warm Springs, and on the roads to Irvington and Niles -in other words -on the spurs of the great mountain that rises above the district.” –Charles Howard Shinn, 1889 By Ralph de Unamuno After having lived in Los Angeles for nearly a decade, I returned to the Bay Area to teach Chicano Studies & History at local community colleges. My commute took me past the Gallegos-Palmdale Winery ruins. My curiosity as a historian led me to research the past of the ruins I had once explored as a young boy growing up in Fremont. I soon uncovered an amazing story about the Gallegos- Palmdale winery in particular, and that Fremont had a remarkable viticultural and enological past in general. From the Spanish-Mission era up to Prohibition, south Fremont (then called the Washington Township), had once been one of the first and most productive wine regions in California. While the Gallegos-Palmdale Winery was not the first or the last winery in Fremont, it is a symbol of a bygone era of Fremont’s historic agricultural past. A past that is all but forgotten but much deserving of acknowledgment to the history of California viticulture and enology. Figure 1 Ruins of the Palmdale Winery. Photo Credit: The Wine Institute The origins of the Golden State’s wine industry has its roots in the Spanish colonial era.

These grapes grew well, but did not produce the extraordinary wine we 1920 associate with California today. This changed with the arrival of the exceptional 1949 grapevines from ancient vineyards in Europe. Many noteworthy men, such as Frenchman 1976 Jean-Louis Vignes, saw the need for delicious quality-producing grapes, thus bringing the first 2007 vitis vinifera to California. • The History of California Wine
Contact: Wine Institute of California Communications Dept. 415/356-7525 [email protected] January 2012 The History of California Wine Winemaking in California began more than 240 years ago. In 1769, Father Junipero Serra, a Franciscan missionary, brought settlers from Mexico into San Diego. He established a mission there and the first known vineyard in California. As he moved north along the route that became known as El Camino Real, he and others established 21 missions linking San Diego in the south to Sonoma in the north. To each, Father Serra brought the cultivation of the grape. The first wines were produced for sacramental purposes and the daily table needs of the missions. The grape variety planted came with the missionaries from Mexico and was known as the Mission grape. About 1830, the commercial era started through the efforts of a Frenchman, Jean Louis Vignes. Arriving from Bordeaux, he saw the land’s potential and soon imported cuttings of many varieties of the native European Vitis vinifera. His vineyard was located in what is now downtown Los Angeles. Shortly thereafter, a group of German Utopians started a large vineyard in Anaheim, now home to the world-famous Disneyland. In 1848, the discovery of gold forever changed the northern half of California. With it came a tremendous increase in population, wealth and settlements. Among those attracted to the pursuit of gold were many immigrants from France, Italy, Germany, Great Britain and other countries. A few struck it rich. Many of those who did not, especially the Europeans, knew much about growing grapes and making wine, and realized that the land offered unlimited potential for vineyards.
