A long time N ago now, but in those days it was very gold mark different making wines from varieties I have never made again, or in places that I never went back to. Jump over 25 years of corporate life and here I am again. Yes, we Wine Club make a lot of Cabernet and Merlot but we are making it from really unique and different places again. As I continue making wine in now 7 countries I not only look at those varieties but also varieties that are unique to the place. Carmenere or Pais in Rapel Chile, Torrontés in San Juan Argentina, and, when was the last time you had a Petite Syrah grown in Australia? Or when was the last time you tasted a wine that was crushed into a vessel and that vessel was not opened for two years? A wine club like this allows me to make the odd little gem that I enjoy doing. Whether its is a different variety, a different place or a different technique. The wines that are available here will only be available here and so I am committed to doing different things to my day job and hope that you also will experience different options than the norm. THE WINE ADVOCATE #229 STEPHAN REINHARDT, 28th Feb 2017 2015 ZEHNTHOF LUCKERT • SYLVANER CREUTZ *** From what is most likely the world’s oldest Sylvaner vineyard (planted in 1870) and, thus, a field blend of all different kinds of Sylvaners such as Gelber (yellow), Roter (red), Blauer (blue) and Muscat-Sylvaner (Sauvignon Blanc), the 2015 Sylvaner Creutz *** is a fascinating wine not just because of its incredible story but its unique flavors and taste! The wine opens very clear and pure and with lovely fruit aromas that a modern Grüner (green) Sylvaner doesn’t give. In fact, there are some muscat flavors here and a subtle intensity you can only find in -un grafted vines, which are extremely rare in Franken. This vineyard is located in a building land, but for some obscure reasons it survived, probably because it is too steep. Uli Luckert discov- ered it in 2011 and made the deal of his life: He got permission to cultivate it and has to pay 12 Bocksbeutel per year for that. The result in 2015 is gorgeous! This is an intense but highly delicate and elegant Sylvaner with lots of energy, finesse and juicy tension. Slightly creamy from the long lees contact until July but provided with very fine tannins, super delicate acidity and a stimulating grip, this is one of the most fascinating Sylvaners I have tasted in the last 12 months if not in years! Some Zinnkoepflé Sylvaner from Southern Alsace comes to my mind (also from limestone soils), but a dry and lush one like this? Not a single one. -

Two methods of ultrasound application were compared in this study: probe ultrasound and bath ultrasound, for periods of 10–20 min per hour. Increases of more than 200% were obtained for some of the compounds from the skins, such as two of its terpenes, citronellol and nerol. On the other hand, increases in alcohol and ester values were registered with the application of ultrasound for 40 min. However, a significant decrease in these compounds was recorded when the ultrasound process was extended. In fact, when ultrasound was applied for 80 min, content values were even lower than those registered for the wine produced without the application of ultrasound. At the sensory level, the effect resulting from probe and bath ultrasound application for different times were compared, where most of the judges successfully discriminated the wines resulting from the application of ultrasound bath. Spain Is a Viticulture Miracle Waiting to Happen, and Has Been in This Pregnant State for Longer Than Seems Decent
SPAIN In a nutshell: Land of American oak, sherry, and loin-yielding bush vines. Grapes: Tempranillo, Garnacha (Grenache) (RED), Airen, Viura (Maccabeo), Verdejo, Albarino (XMITE) Spain is a viticulture miracle waiting to happen, and has been in this pregnant state for longer than seems decent. Proud possessor of more land devoted to vines than any other, Spain is only just beginning to capitalize on this resource in any consistent or cohesive way - which is perhaps not surprising. If it had Germany's love of efficiency, or France's respect for bureaucracy, Spain might be sending us oceans of judiciously priced wine made expressly for the international market. But Spain is an anarchic jumble of districts and regions, just as its landscape is an anarchic jumble of staggeringly raw scenery and heartbreakingly awful human constructions, and has to be treated as such by the wine enthusiast. There is real treasure to be found by those prepared to dig, however and, as a connoisseur class develops in Spain itself, all manner of ambitious investors are planning to change the image of Spanish wine. A look at the map suggests just how much climatic diversity there is likely to be between Spain's many wine regions, from the soggy vine yards of Galicia on the north Atlantic coast to the baked Mediterranean south east. Spain's saving grace, viticulturally, is the altitude of her vineyards, many over 650 m (2000 ft). A high proportion of Spanish vineyards therefore manage to produce grapes with good levels of color and acidity simply because night-time temperatures are relatively low, and grapes do not ripen until the end of a usefully prolonged growing season. -

KARAGIANNIS Wine Institute of Athens, National Agricultural Research Foundation, 1 Sofokli Venizelou str., Lykovrissi 14123, Grèce Abstract: The concentrations of free and glycosidically linked monoterpenes and volatile alcohols in grapes and wines from the cultivars Muscat lefko and Muscat of Alexandria, cultivated in the islands of Samos and Lemnos respectively, were determined. The relationship between free and linked monoterpenes in grapes and wines as well as the relationship between grapes and wines in their monoterpene content was investigated, showing some diffe- rences between the two cultivars and the different vineyards. It is also demonstrated that skin-contact for 8 h at a temperature up to 15 °C, resulted in marked increases in the concentrations of free and linked monoterpenes in wines from both Muscat cultivars. Résumé : Les concentrations des monoterpènes libres et glycosylés dans des raisins et les vins correspondants issus des cépages Muscat lefko et Muscat d’Alexandrie cultivés dans les îles grecques de Samos et de Lemnos, ont été déterminées. On a mesuré les concentrations de l’alcool benzylique, de phényl-2-éthanol et des alcools en C6, libres et glycosylés. L’extraction des composants libres et glycosylés des jus de raisins et des vins a été réalisée à l’aide d’un adsorbant (C18) et de différents solvants. Cette technique permet d’isoler et de séparer les fractions libres et glycosylées de l’arôme. -
