Lamorinda AVA Petition
PETITION TO ESTABLISH A NEW AMERICAN VITICULTURAL AREA TO BE NAMED LAMORINDA The following petition serves as a formal request for the establishment and recognition of an American Viticultural Area to be named Lamorinda, located in Contra Costa County, California. The proposed AVA covers 29,369 acres and includes nearly 139 acres of planted vines and planned plantings. Approximately 85% of this acreage is occupied or will be occupied by commercial viticulture (46 growers). There are six bonded wineries in the proposed AVA and three additional growers are planning bonded wineries. The large number of growers and relatively limited acreage demonstrates an area characterized by small vineyards, a result of some of the unique characteristics of the area. This petition is being submitted by Patrick L. Shabram on behalf of Lamorinda Wine Growers Association. Wineries and growers that are members of the Lamorinda Wine Growers Association are listed in Exhibit M: Lamorinda Wine Growers Association. This petition contains all the information required to establish an AVA in accordance with Title 27 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) part 9.3. List of unique characteristics: All viticulture limited to moderate-to-moderately steep slopes carved from of uplifted sedimentary rock. Geological rock is younger, less resistant sedimentary rock than neighboring rock. Other surrounding areas are areas of active deposition. Soils in Lamorinda have higher clay content, a result of weathered claystone. The topography allows for shallow soils and good runoff, reducing moisture held in the soil. Despite its position near intrusions of coastal air, Lamorinda is protected from coastal cooling influences. Daytime microclimates are more dependent on slope, orientation, and exposure, leading to a large number of microclimates. -

This project is a unique perspective between all of the professionals that tell stories of the missions – architects, landscape architects, planners, artists, historians, archeologists, anthropologists, Padres, tourists, etc. – and is woven into a product rich in illustrations and backed by interesting facts and sources. This project illustrates elements of the mission that most people might not see from a typical tourist viewpoint. This visual essay communicates the rich history of this influential place in a way that more fully demonstrates the fascinating elements of this mission’s systems and strives to lead the reader to a greater appreciation of this place that is part building, part garden, part lore. -

Few wine regions on earth can match Santa Cruz Mountains’ climates, soils and vertigo inspiring views. ARNOT-ROBERTS MODEST REVOLUTIONARIES Experimental winemakers Duncan Meyers and Nathan Roberts have been friends since childhood. Adam Lechmere went to California to find out why they’re rapidly garnering a reputation as two of the state’s most exciting winemakers onversations with winemakers often turn to the conundrum of intervention and non-intervention. The American philosopher-turned-winemaker Abe Schoener of the Scholium Project has some interesting things to say on the subject. His basic C premise (he was a teacher and knows how to put ideas across) is that deciding to do nothing is just as much a decision as deciding to do something. When he leaves a barrel of Chardonnay fermenting in the sun for two years, then that is a form of intervention. The wine is always under his control. The same goes for vineyards. Any good modern winemaker will spend many hours, at all seasons, kicking dirt, talking trellising and cover crops with the vineyard manager. “To make good wine, you need good soils, a good grower, and good weather,” Nathan Roberts told me on a fine spring morning in Sonoma. Roberts and Duncan Meyers have been friends ever since fifth grade, ten or eleven years old, and have been making wine together for the best part of 15 years. Arnot-Roberts has had a slow gestation:“We had seven years with no pay,” Meyers says. They kept their day jobs for those years: Meyers—whose grandfather was an RAF man from Fife in Scotland—working for John Kongsgaard and then at Pax Wine Cellars; and Roberts—a grandson of Robert Mondavi’s widow Margrit— following his father into the family cooperage. -
