Two-time champions Rafael Nadal (2010, 2013) and Novak Djokovic (2011, 2014) will take to Arthur Ashe Stadium with the newly-constructed roof available to ensure that their matches are completed. Play begins on Louis Armstrong Stadium with 2014 US Open champion Marin Cilic, who returns to the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in top form after winning the ATP Masters 1000 Cincinnati title. Nadal will contest the first men’s match on Arthur Ashe Stadium against familiar foe Denis Istomin. The Spaniard has a 4-0 FedEx ATP Head 2 Head record against Istomin, including a straight-set victory en route to his first US Open title in 2010. Nadal is 11-0 in US Open first-round matches dating back to his tournament debut as a 17- year-old in 2003 (d. Vicente). Istomin has lost 20 straight matches against Top 10 opponents (1-31 overall). Djokovic opens the night session against former World No. 14 Jerzy Janowicz. The defending champion has posted a 33-2 hard-court record this season with titles at Doha, the Australian Open and ATP Masters 1000 events in Indian Wells, Miami and Toronto. Djokovic has reached the semi-finals or better nine straight years at the US Open. Janowicz has been limited to two tour-level matches this season due to injuries. He remains the youngest major semi-finalist since Juan Martin del Potro won the 2009 US Open title (2013 Wimbledon). Cilic, who is 12-1 in his last 13 US Open matches, will be challenged by Rogerio Dutra Silva. The Croat captured the Cincinnati title on August 21 in much the same manner that he won the 2014 US Open title. He played 28 Grand Slam tournaments before securing his first major and 70 ATP Masters 1000 events before winning his first championship at the level. To do so, he ended World No. 2 Andy Murray’s career-long 22-match winning streak. A pair of All-American match-ups also highlight Monday’s order of play. In the final match on Louis Armstrong Stadium, No. 26 seed Jack Sock meets 18-year-old Taylor Fritz in a rematch of their five-set, first-rounder at the Australian Open. Sock, who won gold and bronze medals at the Rio Olympics, has swept his last eight encounters with countrymen, while Fritz has lost 11 straight matches against Top 60 opponents. On the brand-new Grandstand, Fritz’s fellow 18-year-old Frances Tiafoe takes on No. 20 seed John Isner, who reclaimed his spot today as the No. 1 American in the Emirates ATP Rankings. First up is a continuation of Sunday’s match between Russians Mikhail Youzhny and Teymuraz Gabashvili, who leads the head-to-head meetings 2-1. Gabashvili, who is up 6-4, 3-3 in the match, has won the last two meetings, in 2008 Moscow and 2009 Zagreb. The conference had a tennis-specific set up as well as innovative tennis medicine content with keynote presentations, break out sessions, and on-court sessions. Thanks to Connor Sport Court, there were 2 court surfaces that were laid down inside the Life University gymnasium for very real on court demonstrations. Some of the participants (and even speakers) found some time to even play out some points and warm up with the foam balls and rackets provided! This conference was also supported by Ortho Atlanta, a local orthopae- dic group that serves as the official medical providers for the Atlanta ATP Championships as well as the Australian Open Wildcard tournament. The International Tennis Performance Association (ITPA), was an- other key contributor, and they also helped to arrange an on court stroke technique evaluation for coaches in conjunction with Georgia Professional Tennis Association (GPTA), and STMS one day prior to the main STMS-USTA conference. Dr. Ben Kibler, Dr. Mark Kovacs, and myself provided an enthusiastic audience of many local tennis professionals, coaches, and some medical providers some specific modifications of strokes for junior elite players as well as adult players.

    The Physics of Tennis Lesson 4: Energy changes when a ball interacts with different surfaces Unit Overview: In this unit students continue to develop understanding of what can be at first glance a complicated system, the game of tennis. In this activity we have taken two components of the game of tennis, the ball and court, to see if we can model the interactions between them. This activity focuses on the energy interactions between ball and court. Objectives: Students will be able to- • Describe what forces interact when the ball hits a surface. • Understand what changes occur when potential and kinetic energy conversion is taking place within a system. At the high school level students should include connections to the concept of “work =FxD” and calculations of Ek = ½ 2 mv and Ep =mgh according to the conservation of energy principal. • Identify the types of energy used in this system. (restricted to potential & kinetic energy) • Comparative relative energy losses for typical court compositions. Lesson Time Required: Four class periods Next Generation Science/Common Core Standards: • NGSS: HS-PS3-1.Create a computational model to calculate the change in the energy of one component in a system when the change in energy of the other component(s) and energy flows in and out of the system are known. • CCSS.Math.
