  • 'Perfect Fit': Industrial Strategies, Textual Negotiations and Celebrity
‘Perfect Fit’: Industrial Strategies, Textual Negotiations and Celebrity Culture in Fashion Television Helen Warner Submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) University of East Anglia School of Film and Television Studies Submitted July 2010 ©This copy of the thesis has been supplied on condition that anyone who consults it is understood to recognise that its copyright rests with the author and that no quotation from the thesis, nor any information derived therefrom, may be published without the author's prior, written consent. Helen Warner P a g e | 2 ABSTRACT According to the head of the American Costume Designers‟ Guild, Deborah Nadoolman Landis, fashion is emphatically „not costume‟. However, if this is the case, how do we approach costume in a television show like Sex and the City (1998-2004), which we know (via press articles and various other extra-textual materials) to be comprised of designer clothes? Once onscreen, are the clothes in Sex and the City to be interpreted as „costume‟, rather than „fashion‟? To be sure, it is important to tease out precise definitions of key terms, but to position fashion as the antithesis of costume is reductive. Landis‟ claim is based on the assumption that the purpose of costume is to tell a story. She thereby neglects to acknowledge that the audience may read certain costumes as fashion - which exists in a framework of discourses that can be located beyond the text. This is particularly relevant with regard to contemporary US television which, according to press reports, has witnessed an emergence of „fashion programming‟ - fictional programming with a narrative focus on fashion.

Women’s Role in the Series Desperate Housewives: A Feminist Perspective Cholawat Prawalpatamakul, Khon Kaen University, Thailand Suban Keowkanya, Khon Kaen University, Thailand The Asian Conference on Education & International Development 2017 Official Conference Proceedings Abstract Desperate Housewives, created by Marc Cherry and aired on the ABC channel for eight seasons, is considered a representation of gender, specifically femininity, on the television (Bignell, 2008). Its plot focuses on the lives of four women (Bree Van De Kamp, Lynette Scavo, Gabriel Solis and Susan Delfino) who represent the internal struggles of the average woman, such as disempowerment, restrictions, and the confusing relationships of modern women in society (Coward, 2006; Sayeau, 2006; Morgan, 2007). With the emergence of the feminist movement, it is skeptical on how the series portray the four female protagonists when viewed through the lens of feminist perspective. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to critically analyze the women’s roles in the series by using feminist theory as a lens. The eighth season of the series was selected since this season is the latest and shows the conclusion of all the characters. The results of the analysis showed all aspects of women's roles which reflected feminist theory in many ways. The four female protagonists portray the roles of housewife, mother, and daughter. The oppression, the gender performance, the sexual pleasure, the female friendship, and the contradiction are found and presented which can reflect the feminist theory clearly. Keywords: women, role, feminism, Desperate Housewives iafor The International Academic Forum www.iafor.org Introduction Desperate Housewives was broadcasted on ABC Channel for eight seasons.

Running head: EVOLUTION OF ‘THE MOTHER’ 1 The Evolution of ‘The Mother’ on Television: From the Kitchen to the Boardroom Matthew Searfoss Email: [email protected] Ramapo College of New Jersey School of Contemporary Arts 505 Ramapo Valley Road Mahwah, NJ 07430 Paper submitted to Ramapo College Honors Program as Senior Project Spring 2017 EVOLUTION OF ‘THE MOTHER’ 2 Abstract This project will look at the evolution of “the mother” and motherhood on TV from the 1950s- Present Day. The research began by casting a wide net in order to find a wide variety of sources highlighting concepts relating to how the views of motherhood has shifted over time and how the shift has been seen on television. Through the entirety of this project, I was able to yield two primary data sets data sets: first off being focus group sessions with mothers to gain their view on the subject and which TV mothers they identify/ied with, and secondly my own rhetorical/narrative analysis of the characters and shows they highlight. Ultimately, the research discovered that despite the amount of progress that has been made in improving the way mothers are represented on popular television series, many of the modern day portrayals continue to cling to a gender binary and restrictive gender norms which place the mother at the beck and call of her husband and children. Keywords: Motherhood, Female representation, Television, Gender EVOLUTION OF ‘THE MOTHER’ 3 Rationale/Introduction In this research project, I explored the way that mothers are represented in media, specifically on television as well as how they are viewed in society.

  • How Actress Marcia Cross Learned to Manage Severe Migraines
SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2006 BY LINDA CHILDERS How Actress Marcia Cross Learned to Manage Severe Migraines Cross found ways to limit debilitating migraines —and found serenity on TV's ho}est series, "Desperate Housewives." Marcia Cross knew desperation long before she took up residence on Wisteria Lane. She was only 14 when her first migraine left her frightened and writhing in pain. For the next 20 years, migraines would drive her to the school nurse's office, off the set of the TV shows she starred on, and ultimately even to the emergency room. These days, ironically, her character on the hit series "Desperate Housewives," the Stepford-like Bree Van De Kamp, would seem an ideal candidate for migraines. Bree's tightly wound personality is strained by events that couldn't be more stressful: her first husband was killed by her psychotic suitor, her second husband murdered his first wife, her estranged teenage children are out of control, and not coincidentally she's got a drinking problem. All of which she tries to hide behind her porcelain smile and her perfect garden. Cross has taken up yoga to reduce stress and the risk of migraines. As hard as Bree Van De Kamp works to keep up appearances on Wisteria Lane, even Marcia Cross herself is surprised that her character hasn't suffered so much as a single headache in the first three seasons of TV's hottest show. "You know," Cross muses, breaking into a genuine smile, "I might have to ask the writers about putting it in." Then again, as she's quick to point out, in real life she's nothing like the fictional Bree, who's a consummate control freak.
