But just when and where does the term “tying the knot” come from? The phrase “tying the knot” is steeped in tradition, though the origins of the phrase remain open for debate. One origin story states that tying the knot can be traced back to the Roman empire, when brides wore girdles that were tied in knots, and the groom had to eventually untie those knots to consummate the Preserve & Protect marriage. Tying the knot also may be traced to the custom of handfasting. The marriage contract was established between a bride and a groom by joining their hands together and tying them. Although Your Wedding Gown accounts vary as to whether the hands were tied only during the ceremony or later, this is believed to be an ancient Renaissance or For Generations to Come Celtic tradition. Others speculate that the phrase traces its origins to Hindu weddings in which brides and grooms tied a necklace of flowers • Keepsake Box as part of wedding tradition. Yet another theory suggests that the phrase can be traced back to the knotted string that supported beds • Clean & Press Gowns/Dresses Prior to Wedding prior to the use of metal springs. THESIS WRITE MY THESIS: MAGAZINES, BLOGS AND DESIGN…WIKI-STYLE Brittany Watson Interior Design In partial fulfillment of the requirements For the Degree of Master of Art Corcoran College of Art and Design Washington DC Spring 2010 2 Thesis Statement Design blogs and other forms of social media have assumed a more prominent role over the traditional printed magazine in disseminating information, creating a sense of community, encouraging artistic collaboration and identifying new tastes, which is explored in this thesis through author-mediated crowd-sourcing through a blog called Write My Thesis leading to an online magazine, Baker Street. Abstract The day Domino magazine folded in January of 2009, a silence was heard throughout the design community. This marked yet another design magazine that had fallen victim to declining advertisement sales in recent years. Until this point, magazines were at the forefront of identifying design trends and up-and-coming designers, while providing one of the only locations to provide guides of where to find products and how to assemble looks. The rise in social media, including blogs, vlogs, wikis, podcasts, wall postings, and photosharing, has quickly assumed a more prominent role in the wake of printed magazines. Like Wikipedia, this thesis is mass-collaboratively written by the users of the Web 2.0 through crowd-sourcing the content on a wiki site with the author acting as mediator and main contributor. The aim is to discover the benefits of social media versus 3 traditional print and how it affects design. The project describes the qualities that made the magazine successful in its golden age and how they eventually grew outdated as social media became more popular.

Books have become kindles, magazines have created e-zines and newspapers have become websites, which update multiple times per day. In the age of the Internet, these mediums have become interactive through surveys, posts and blogs, which allow the readers to participate and add value to both the content as well as give feedback about the demographic. However, it can be difficult to maintain a reader’s attention and the interest of advertisers due to the vast amount of information available almost anywhere. In order for the publications to have a better sense of control, specifically in terms of bridal magazines, a bride’s source of inspiration and creativity is commonly derived from wedding magazines.

  • Romancing the Other: Non-Christian and Interfaith Marriage in Late Middle English Literature, 1300-1450
ROMANCING THE OTHER: NON-CHRISTIAN AND INTERFAITH MARRIAGE IN LATE MIDDLE ENGLISH LITERATURE, 1300-1450 DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Jennifer Mary Gianfalla, M.A. ***** The Ohio State University 2009 Dissertation Committee: Approved by Professor Lisa J. Kiser, Advisor Professor Richard Firth Green Professor Karen A. Winstead ____________________________ Advisor English Graduate Program ABSTRACT This dissertation makes a significant contribution to postcolonial medieval studies by examining how fourteenth- and fifteenth-century Middle English authors use representations of non-Christian and interfaith marriages to enter a wider Christian European discourse centered around the threat of the religious Other. Because such marriages are not well documented historically in medieval England, my dissertation argues that their portrayal is not a reflection of actual practice, but rather a fantasy that allows these authors to engage actively in maintaining and defending the dominance of Christianity and the Catholic Church. As my readings show, these texts serve to bolster the Church’s campaign against non-Christians by moving this campaign to marriage’s domestic sphere. Marriage is thus not only politically important, as it enables alliances to be forged among kingdoms and nations; it is now also religiously important, as it becomes a means for the culture to fantasize about the extent to which Christianity can dominate. The texts I examine cover an extensive period of the later Middle Ages, ranging from 1300 to 1450; the period of one hundred fifty years indicates that authors maintained an interest in conversion as a consequence of marriage and suggests that this motif was pervasive.
