Ethiopia and India: Fusion and Confusion in British Orientalism Phiroze Vasunia Can the Ethiopian change his skinne? or the leopard his spots? Jeremiah 13.23, in the King James Version (1611) May a man of Inde chaunge his skinne, and the cat of the mountayne her spottes? Jeremiah 13.23, in the Bishops’ Bible (1568) I once encountered in Sicily an interesting parallel to the ancient confusion between Indians and Ethiopians, between east and south. A colleague and I had spent some pleasant moments with the local custodian of an archaeological site. Finally the Sicilian’s curiosity prompted him to inquire of me “Are you Chinese?” Frank M. Snowden, Blacks in Antiquity (1970) The ancient confusion between Ethiopia and India persists into the late European Enlightenment. Instances of the confusion can be found in the writings of distinguished Orientalists such as William Jones and also of a number of other Europeans now less well known and less highly regarded. -

Bible-Work in 19Th Century Jerusalem
First “Organized” F T H E B I B O L E N D A L Bible-work in E H T th N 19 Century I K R Jerusalem O W E L B (1816–1831) I B Part VII: Five Bible-men in Jerusalem (1823–1824) by Kai Kjær-Hansen In the spring of 1823, a trio consisting of Joseph Wolff and two American missionaries – Pliny Fisk and Jonas King – had worked as Bible-men in Jerusalem. Fisk and King had soon sold their rather limited supply of mainly non-Hebrew Scriptures. Throughout the period Wolff was in a position to supply Hebrew Scriptures, but he was only able to distribute a few to Jews in Jerusalem. Four months after leaving Jerusalem, Fisk is back in the town, and a reorganization of the work is carried out. A Jerusalem Bible Society was not established, but at the turn of the year 1823–1824 a “Bible Society Room” is set up in Jerusalem. A good many Scriptures are distributed over these five months. The present challenge is to uncover the relationship between the distribution of non-Hebrew Scriptures to Christians – be they residents of Jerusalem or pilgrims – and Hebrew Scriptures to Jews. Pliny Fisk is the only one of these five Bible-men who remains in Jerusalem all through this period of five months, from November 21, 1823, to April 22, 1824.1 The others are listed chronologically. William Jowett, a resident of Malta, is sent out by the Church Missionary Society (CMS); he arrives together with Fisk and stays in Jerusalem for approximately three weeks. -
6 PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT 6.1 Air Quality
6 PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT 6.1 Air Quality 6.1.1 Sources of Air Pollution The sources of air pollution in İzmir are industrial plants, traffic, and burning facilities used in the winter season for heating purposes. “İzmir Clean Air Plan”, prepared in 2001 states that, sulphur dioxide (SO2) emitted by industrial plants, airbone particles (PM10) generated by residential heating, nitrogen oxide (NO, NO2, NOx) released by traffic, volatile organic compounds and carbon monoxide (CO) are the main factors of air pollution.221 The air quality levels are constantly surveilled at the city centre within IMM boundaries, at 4 spots (Alsancak, Bornova, Konak-Guzelyali, and Karsiyaka) by IMM, via fully-automated stationary measurement devices. The stations located in Bornova, Karsiyaka and Guzelyali measure only PM10 and SO2. The station located in Alsancak 219 measures PM10, SO2, CO, nitrogen oxides and ozone (O3) levels. Also there is an air measurement station station of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry in Gaziemir districts which began operating in 2007.213 However, stabile measurements could not be performed yet due to calibration works of PM10 and SO2 devices. Measurement results of Stable Air Surveillance Stations installed in all cities in Turkey within the scope of Air Quality Surveillance Network work of Ministry of Environment and Forestry can be followed up in the internet environment from “http://www.çevreorman.gov.tr/” address of Ministry.214 Table 91, Table 92 show monthly and yearly mean values of PM10 and SO2 levels measured in station -

Wednesday, Nov. 19, 1823—We setoff, considerably before day-light, for Nablous. The air was extremely keen for the first two hours; and, gradually, when the sun had risen, its burning heat came upon us, with a doubly-exhausting effect. It was about an hour after mid-day that we had our first view of the city of Nablous, romantically situated in a deep valley, between the mountains of Ebal on our left and Gerizim on the right. There is a kind of sublime horror in the lofty, craggy, and barren aspect of these two mountains, which seem to face each other with an air of defiance; especially as they stand contrasted with the rich valley beneath, where the city appears to - be imbedded on either side in green gardens and extensive olive-grounds— rendered more verdant, by the lengthened periods of shade which they enjoy from the mountains on each side. -

The name given to this collective process is, for short, the “Izmir Mo- del”. The Izmir Metropolitan Municipality formed an inner team of 12, composed of experts as well as senior administrators of the municipality with the purpo- se of drawing the conceptual framework of this project. This team had its first meeting on 21 January 2017. After two meetings, this team ensured that four research projects were conducted and the findings of these research projects took definitive shape in four distinct workshops, with the aim of clarifying the basic concepts/values to be employed for the Izmir Model. Later, for the Model to be based on the data flowing from the experience/performance of the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, the inner team organised research to be conducted by handpicked academics/researchers on 20 different topics determined by the inner research team.
