  • DIY Identities in a DIY Scene: Trans Music in the UK
This is an open access author copy of a chapter published in the edited book: The Emergence of Trans: Cultures, Politics and Everyday Lives. It is an updated version of an essay first published in the journal Sexualities, under the title “De/constructing DIY identities in a trans music scene”. To cite this chapter in formal academic work, please use the published version: https://www.taylorfrancis.com/books/9781315145815 DIY identities in a DIY scene: trans music events in the UK Kirsty Lohman and Ruth Pearce The past three decades have seen the emergence of an increasingly vigorous and outspoken trans movement in the United Kingdom. Resulting political and social changes have been accompanied by an increasing number of individuals willing to disclose their trans status and be publicly trans. With the development of ‘new modes’ and ‘different codes’ of trans identity and political activism (Whittle, 1998: 393), and an increasingly visible trans population, the stand- alone trans has also come to operate as an organising category for cultural forms. Whereas previous terminologies such as ‘transsexual’, ‘transvestite’ (and perhaps even ‘transgender’) provided more distinct categorical accounts of gender-variant possibility, ‘trans’ is intentionally open and – like ‘queer’ – refuses any clear or coherent definition (Pearce, Steinberg and Moon, 2019). In this chapter, we reflect on what it might mean to ‘do’ trans in a contemporary cultural context, in the tradition of recent accounts of trans music, theatre and performance (see, for instance Halberstam, 2005; Kumpf, 2016; Gossett, Stanley and Burton, 2017; Jaime, 2017; Landry, 2018). While there have always been trans performers, opportunities for their involvement in somewhat regular trans events have historically been limited.

  • Copeland Bio 2014
Copeland - IXORA Aaron Marsh Bryan Laurenson Jonathan Bucklew Stephen Laurenson Copeland has reunited to release their sixth album after calling it quits in 2009. Here’s what you need to know: • Copeland formed in Lakeland, Florida in 2001. The band’s first album, Beneath Medicine Tree, came out in 2003 on indie label The Militia Group. The album’s layered melodies, combined with Marsh’s thoughtful, emotive croon, immediately engaged music fans, offering a nuanced take on the emo music of the early ‘00s. The group unveiled four subsequent albums between 2005 and 2008, including Eat, Sleep, Repeat on Columbia Records in 2006. Copeland signed with Tooth & Nail in 2008 and have partnered with the label to release their long awaited sixth album, Ixora. • In their heyday, the band played over 200 shows a year. They’ve toured with Brand New, Sparta, Goo Goo Dolls, The Rentals, Bob Mould, Switchfoot, Motion City Soundtrack and Guster. Copeland has also historically supported new artists and Paramore’s first ever show was opening for Copeland in Nashville in 2004. • Copeland officially broke up in October of 2009 after nine years as a band. They wrote on their website, “We have come to an extremely difficult decision. It has come time for us to move on from Copeland and follow other paths in our lives. To put your minds at ease, we assure you this is not a bitter break up. We all individually feel Copeland has run its course in our lives and it’s time for us to pursue what is next.” The band members added, “It has been discussed and we are not ruling out the possibility of recording one more album sometime in the future.” • The band members have pursued other musical endeavors over the past few years.

  • Rock Music's Crusade of Authenticity
ROCK MUSIC’S CRUSADE OF AUTHENTICITY by DANIEL BROMFIELD A THESIS Presented to the Department of Journalism and the Robert D. Clark Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Arts June 2016 An Abstract of the Thesis of Daniel Bromfield for the degree of Bachelor of Arts in the School of Journalism and Communications to be taken June 2016 Title: Rock Music's Crusade Of Authenticity Prof. Thomas Wheeler This thesis attempts to define rock music's standards of authenticity and explore their origins. Included are comparison of rock's standards of authenticity to those of other genres and an exploration of how authenticity has been perceived throughout the history of rock music. This study argues that rock's standards of authenticity are unusual among pop music genres in that they entail artists both writing their own songs and playing their own instruments. This is in contrast to genres like hip hop, contemporary pop, and R&B, which have their own quite different standards of authenticity. Quotes from rock fans, critics, and musicians are used to provide insight into rock's standards of authenticity and how they developed over time. ii Acknowledgements I would like to first and foremost thank my father for introducing me to music. If not for his decision to turn me on to the Beatles one sunny day in June 2006, I would surely be pursuing a far more boring career – and thesis topic. And I would like to thank my mother for giving me a great life and being endlessly supportive.
