© Lonely Planet Publications 316 Central Highlands The beauty of the central highlands is that there’s plenty of space to disappear into. The undulating landscape that once sheltered VC soldiers down the Ho Chi Minh Trail now of- fers an intriguing refuge for travellers. There’s a rugged charm to its villages and valleys, waterfalls and winding roads, and except at the former French hill station of Dalat, foreigners are still quite a rarity. Most people come here to visit Montagnard (hill-tribe) villages; the further off the beaten track you travel, the more unspoiled an existence you’ll find. Likewise the natural attractions in the vicinity are simple, rustic affairs. Most don’t rate as must-sees, just pleasant pit stops CENTRAL HIGHLANDS if you’re roving about on your own. In 2001 and 2004 protests erupted in Buon Ma Thuot, Pleiku and other parts of the highlands, objecting to the government’s resettlement and land policies and alleged dis- crimination against Montagnards. While things seem quiet now, international human-rights groups continue to report instances of ill-treatment of ethnic minorities. As for the natural landscape, it’s beautiful but in some places marred – first by Agent Orange in the American War, then by slash-and-burn agriculture, now by expanding farms and dams. Despite its fraught history, the central highlands are safe and easy to travel. Dalat is perfect for a weekend’s respite from the heat, the rest of the highlands for a week-long immersion in a life far from the madding crowd. HIGHLIGHTS Learn about the

  • Bien Hoa, Airbase, RVN from Wikipedia, the Free Encyclopedia
Bien Hoa, Airbase, RVN From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia During the Vietnam Wars (1955–75), the base was used by the Republic of Vietnam Air Force (VNAF). The United States used it as a major base from 1961 through 1973, stationing Army, Air Force (USAF), Navy, and Marine units there. Bien Hoa is located on quiet, flat grounds in a rural area 25 kilometres (16 mi) northeast of Saigon. The French Air Force established an air base, the Base aérienne tactique 192, which was very active during the First Indochina War. On 1 June 1955, Bien Hoa Air Base became the VNAF's logistics support base when the French evacuated their main depot at Hanoi. At that time the VNAF was in its final days as an auxiliary air arm under total French control. Not long after it was established as a VNAF base the facility took on a tactical role as well as that of a depot. It was here that the VNAF's 1st Fighter Squadron (later renumbered the 514th FS) was formed on 1 June 1956. From this point Bien Hoa became the base of newly formed and continually growing air units. The VNAF 2311th Air Group, later to become an Air Wing, and the 311th Air Division were also stationed there. and the base supported the greatest number of air combat units than any other have throughout South Vietnam. With the influx of USAF tactical air units in the early 1960s, Bien Hoa became a joint operating base for both VNAF and USAF organizations. The USAF forces stationed there were under the command of the Pacific Air Forces (PACAF).

  • Endemic Birds and Protected Area Development on the Da Lat Plateau, Vietnam
Bird Conservation International (1995) 5:491-523 Endemic birds and protected area development on the Da Lat Plateau, Vietnam JONATHAN C. EAMES Summary A study of Thuong Da Nhim and Chu Yang Sin Nature Reserves - identified as priority sites because located within the Da Lat Plateau Endemic Bird Area (EBA) in Vietnam - was conducted between 10 November 1993 and 1 February 1994. A total of 212 bird species, of which 11 are considered globally threatened (including the rediscovered Grey-crowned Crocias Crocias langbianis), were recorded in the reserves. Eight restricted-range species were recorded, including the four species confined to the EBA. These two reserves are of international importance because they jointly support bird communities representative of the EBA. They are also of great economic importance, being within watersheds. Their extent is believed adequate but it is not known if they encompass all representative habitats over the full altitudinal range. Local tribal communities traditionally practise shifting cultivation, which has greatly modified the extent, composition and quality of evergreen forest and is causing its increasing fragmentation. Deliberate fires are preventing the regeneration of evergreen forest and promoting the growth of a climax dominated by Pinus kesiya. This reduces bird diversity and compromises the future of the endemic bird taxa. Other threats include recent logging activities, human immigration, the urban expansion of Da Lat and consequent increasing demand for charcoal and fuelwood. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development should urgently proceed with the production of management plans for these areas, aiming to create a single, enlarged protected area. The primary land-use management strategy should be to conserve remaining areas of evergreen forest and to increase their extent by boundary realignment, elimination of shifting cultivation and fire, and the introduction of sympathetic forestry practices.
