AlgomaThatReal.com 14 15 Algoma | 2016 Travel Guide Algoma Walleye Fishing by The Fish’n Canada Show.

Fish’n Canada’s 2015 shooting season started off with a bang as we had the honour of again flying into Ontario’s Algoma region for some outstanding Walleye fishing. Our destination was Nagagami Lake which is deemed as the ultimate Walleye structure lake in Algoma (bottom features which attract fish). After experiencing Nagagami Lake for the first time, we definitely agree. We found and caught fish shallow, deep, in sheltered bays, in big water, on points, on humps and believe it or not, the list goes on.

Since it was early in the Walleye season we had to rely on the trusty jig and minnow combo... not a problem in our books as it’s a “go to” for Algoma Walleye in general. As the season progresses artificial baits will definitely come into their own... I guess we’ll have to save that for a future trip.

One statement we can honestly keep on making without any hesitation is, “Algoma produces more and bigger Walleye for us than anywhere else in the country!”

AlgomaThatReal.com 16 Fly Fishing Algoma’s abundance of pristine lakes and crystal-clear rivers makes our region one of the best places to fly fish. You can catch fat smallmouth bass with top water poppers, hook into chunky brook trout with dry flies, or wade in accessible rapids for salmon and rainbow.

For Fly Fishers Algoma is a True Paradise.

In Algoma you have many different options for true wilderness fly fishing. You can fly-in to remote lodges or you can even take a train. If you want true solitude, many operators have remote outposts with cabins on lakes you can call your own. There are drive-in lodges with cottages and cabins set on stunning pristine lakes and rivers which allow convenience of parking right outside your door.

There is also world-class salmon and steelhead fishing, right in the heart of Sault Ste. Marie. You can just walk to the rapids from your hotel and swing a fly for big fish, it is that easy. There are guide services available with the knowledge and experience you need in the world renowned rapids.

No matter your choice, there are numerous options for fly fishing vacations that are ideal for you, friends and family. If you want to get away from crowds, this is the place to go. Best of all, this world class fly fishing is very reasonably priced and easy to get to!

For fly fishers, Algoma is a true paradise with so many species and opportunities. To learn more about incredible fly fishing opportunities that are easy to access and are very affordable, please visit our website for more details www.algomaflyfishing.com

17 Algoma | 2016 Travel Guide Tips-Fly Fishing Using Streamers by The New Fly Fisher Show.

In Algoma Country you have a lot of great fishing opportunities on a fly. One of the best fly patterns you can use is a streamer. Streamers work with smallmouth bass, brook trout, steelhead, lake trout and even northern pike! Here are tips to consider when using streamers in Algoma:

Smallmouth bass Smallmouth bass eat lots of minnows and smelt, especially in the spring and fall. Try using intermediate lines married to fly patterns like Scotty’s McFly, the Gamechanger or even the Grey Ghost to trigger strikes. Sizes should be 2 to 8. White is the number one choice in colours.

Brook Trout For brook trout try using black, white and olive streamers that have the silhouette of sculpin. Sculpin are a favourite food source for trout and swinging one of the common sculpin patterns like Zoo Cougars will entice explosive strikes.

NORTHERN PIKE Northern pike love eating perch, walleye and whitefish. Try using large streamers (6-10 inches) that have the colouration of these sources of food. Full-sinking lines in 9 or 10 weight are ideal for pike and getting these streamers down in the water column.

Lake Trout Right after ice-out lake trout are on the prowl for food in water depths of 3-10 feet. Casting streamers in white, black or purple with either a full sinking or intermediate flyline is a great way to trigger a bite. Once you hook into a lake trout – hang on, this will be a significant battle of tug-of-war.

Steelhead Steelhead are very aggressive when they come into rivers Whenever you come to Algoma, no matter searching for food or post-spawn. Black streamers such as what season, ensure you bring a number of Wooly Buggers and especially black Matukas are very deadly. streamers in your fly box. With a vast array of Swing the flies near or by where steelheads lie and hang on! species and fishing opportunities available here The strikes will nearly jolt the rod out of your arm! – you are sure to hook into a trophy fish with a streamer!

AlgomaThatReal.com 18 Hunting Our professionals will cater to you if you are not familiar with our area, or want to be assured a fair chance of going home with a trophy. Your meals, accommodations, trophy mounting and the packing and shipping of your game will all be taken care of for you while you relax and enjoy the excitement of the stalk.

Hunt for Big Game, Wild Fowl or Small Game.

Many of our Algoma resorts, lodges and fly-in wilderness camps easily transform themselves from summer vacation locations to seasonal hunt camps with experienced guides. These hunting lodges play an important role for the non- resident moose hunter because all non-resident moose hunters must be a registered guest at a tourist outfitters lodge to be eligible for a moose licence.

Hunting season in Algoma begins when the leaves change colour in the fall and ends when the first blanket of snow layers the ground. We offer three types of hunting adventures in our “big backyard”: small game, wild fowl and big game. Black bear season begins in mid-August while small game, wild fowl and big game, including moose & deer, begin mid September thru mid December.

ONTARIO HUNTING REGULATIONS & LICENCE INFORMATION www.ontario.ca/travel-and-recreation/hunting

Every person in your party must have a valid licence and Ontario for at least 6 consecutive months during the 12 months Outdoors Card to hunt any animal or bird and must have it with immediately before applying for a licence. All others are them while hunting. Non-residents must be 16 years of age considered a non-resident. A small game hunting licence is not or older and only residents may apply at 15 with the consent valid in some parts of Northern and Central Ontario from June of both parents. A resident is someone who has resided in 16 to August 31.

St. Joseph Island

Many colourful stories – some legend, some historical fact – are told about St. Joseph Island, the second largest freshwater island in the world, situated in the channel between Lakes Huron and Superior. About 45 km (28 mi) long and 24 km (15 mi) wide, the 140,000-acre island is 56 km (28 mi) east of Sault Ste. Marie via Highways 17 and 548. Fort St. Joseph National Historic Site of Canada is a must- see stop. The British chose St. Joseph Island as the ideal location for a fort because of its proximity to Fort Mackinac, to the navigation routes controlling the fur trade and access to the Great Lakes. Hospital and Medical Services Most communities in Algoma have hospitals and/or resident doctors. Wise travelers will check with their medical service plans to ensure they will be covered while in Canada. If you are importing prescription drugs, make sure they are clearly identified. The drugs should be in the original packaging with a label that specifies what they are and that they are being used under prescription. If this is not possible, carry a copy of the prescription or a letter from your doctor. For further information and insurance details contact your travel or insurance agent.

Credit Cards, Financial Services and U.S. Funds Chartered banks are located in virtually all cities and towns in Algoma. These full-service institutions are the best locations for exchanging currency. There is also a government sanctioned Canada / U.S. currency exchange service at the Ontario Travel Information Centre in Sault Ste. Marie and at the Duty Free Store & Kiosk. Credit cards such as Visa, MasterCard and AMEX, are generally honoured in all communities . Be sure to check with individual businesses before or when booking accommodations to ensure they accept your type of card.

Liquor Outlets and the Law You must be 19 or over to buy or consume liquor, wine and beer in Ontario. It is an offence to consume alcohol anywhere other than in a licenced establishment, your residence or within a reasonable distance of your residence. Ontario laws prohibit having open bottles of liquor in a location accessible to the driver of a vehicle. Please don’t drink and drive! Visitors to Ontario looking to buy liquor or beer for consumption outside a licenced establishment have to go to 2 separate stores. Liquor including wine, is available through stores run by the Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) or in smaller centers, by their authorized representative. Beer may be purchased through “The Beer Store” or directly from brewery outlets.
