A place of peace. Igniting hearts. Dear Friend of Jesuit Retreat House: Board of Directors What do you seek for happiness? A big home? A recognized career? A Rita Carfagna fabulous salary? Chair What is the ‘drive’ or ‘passion’ in your life? What has grabbed you and John V. Biernacki absorbed you? What do you think about when you are alone? What consumes your energy, Hugh Buchanan your creativity, your relationships with others? Elizabeth Cotter Or, perhaps, your relationship with God? Even more challenging: Is God part of this driven, Frank DeSantis tireless, motion-filled life that controls you? Tina M. Facca, PhD When we give time to our soul, our spirit, we invite these furies of our competitive lives to be Kathleen Ferry confronted and challenged, to disappear and in their place we welcome peace, generosity, open mindedness, and love. Yes, the love of a God who has been waiting so patiently to Rita Mary Harwood, SND come in. St. Ignatius Loyola had a term for this openness to God: the Spiritual Exercises. Keith Lashinger We might refer to it as ‘retreat’. In the Book of Revelations, there is a warming and devotional image of Our Lord knocking on a door in the passage which says: “Here I stand, Paul V. Murphy knocking at the door. If anyone hears me calling and opens the door, I will enter his house and have supper with him and he with me.” Rev. 3: 20. Donald Petkash, SJ Jim Riley, SJ The image has been captured by artists for centuries; no doubt you have seen a popular rendition on many a holy card over the years. I invite you to conjure up that image and ask Robert Welsh, SJ yourself, ‘What have I let choose me? What can I choose to replace it so that I am the person Mary Ann Flannery, SC God has created me to be? ‘ When I come close to answering these questions, I will be closer Executive Director to holiness. Barbara Leggott Associate Director So I invite you to come to the JRH. Make a weekend retreat. Or, start with a day retreat or an evening talk. Put your fear aside. Open the door on which He is knocking and let Him in during your quiet time here. Choose Him. Your life will never be the same because you will be letting His love drive your life, and the seductive attractions of secularism will no longer Our Mission: ‘choose’ you. Inspired by the Gospel of In Christ’s love, Jesus Christ, rooted in the spirituality of St. Ignatius, Jesuit Retreat House provides a sacred setting for outreach, Sr. Mary Ann Flannery, S.C. retreats and programs of Executive Director growth and development for people in the contem- porary Church and society. JRH New Board Chair 2013 Hearts on Fire I am honored and happy to serve as the Chairperson of the JRH Board this year and I feel privileged to work alongside the many generous individuals who are also serving on the Board. Together we are blessed to support Sr. Mary Ann Flannery, S.C. and the rest of the dedicated and talented staff as they strive to provide the spiritual nourishment for such a wide range of seekers - the youth who are growing in a heartfelt knowledge of Jesus Christ through their Kairos retreats, the young adults who are further discerning God’s call to them, the addicted who seek the healing that only Jesus can provide, the seniors who long to deepen their relationship with God, those in ministry who need to recharge their spiritual batteries, the professionals striving to live their faith in the workplace. As a Board, we, too, are making a concerted effort at our own ongoing spiritual formation. Last winter, we participated in the 6-week “Called and Sent” Lay Leadership module, “Ignatian Spirituality: Grounding for Life.” Together we learned more about St. Ignatius and the Spiritual Exercises, we prayed together and we shared how we are finding God in the work we are doing at JRH. Additionally, at each Board meeting, the opening prayer includes an “Ignatian moment” to help us stay focused on the Jesuit charisma that shapes all we do and we close each meeting with a communal discernment. We take several minutes to reflect on the meeting to notice the moments when we felt discouraged or confused (spiritual desolation) and the moments we felt energized or hopeful (spiritual consolation) to further discern how God may be leading us as a group. Finally, over the past few months, several Board members have been interviewing past Board chairs and Executive Directors of JRH in order to piece together a “sacred history” of JRH. Although we are still finalizing this document, the rough draft provides ample evidence that the Holy Spirit has been very active in the ministry of JRH for many, many years! No matter the individuals serving or the problems they encountered, over the years, through the grace of God, JRH has continued to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ through the good news of the Spiritual Exercises. It is humbling, indeed, to be a part of this awesome ministry as we write our own pages of its sacred history. In closing, in the name of the One who loves us, heals us, leads us, and saves us, Jesus Christ, our Lord, I thank you for being a part of the sacred history of JRH and I ask that you continue to journey with us in support of its critical ministry – helping all seekers to know our loving God. Christ’s peace, Rita Carfagna JRH Welcomes Fr. Roche, S.J. JRH Welcomes Fr. Matthew Roche, S.J.
