THE SOUTH ACCORDING TO QUENTIN TARANTINO A Thesis presented in partial fulfillment of requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Department of the Center for the Study of Southern Culture The University of Mississippi by MICHAEL LEE HENLEY August 2015 Copyright Michael Lee Henley 2015 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT This thesis explores the filmmaker Quentin Tarantino’s portrayal of the South and southerners in his films Pulp Fiction (1994), Death Proof (2007), and Django Unchained (2012). In order to do so, it explores and explains Tarantino’s mixture of genres, influences, and filmmaking styles in which he places the South and its inhabitants into current trends in southern studies which aim to examine the South as a place that is defined by cultural reproductions, lacking authenticity, and cultural distinctiveness. Like Godard before him, Tarantino’s movies are commentaries on film history itself. In short, Tarantino’s films actively reimagine the South and southerners in a way that is not nostalgic for a “southern way of life,” nor meant to exploit lower class whites.

Schweitzer November 2004 This thesis entitled TON & TRAUM: A CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF THE USE OF SOUND EFFECTS AND MUSIC IN CONTEMPORARY NARRATIVE FILM by Dennis C. Schweitzer has been approved by the School of Film and the College of Fine Arts by Ruth Bradley Associate Professor of Film Raymond Tymas-Jones Dean, College of Fine Arts SCHWEITZER, DENNIS C. M.A. November 2004. Film Ton & Traum: A Critical Analysis Of The Use Of Sound Effects And Music In Contemporary Narrative Film (87 pp.) Director of Master of Arts Thesis: Ruth Bradley We often talk about the mysterious Magic of the Movies, the unique ability of the filmic medium to take the audience into another world, another era, even another galaxy. We also talk about film’s unique ability to record life as it happens and to document what is going on in our world, be it right where we live or at the most remote place on Earth. But whenever we look at film as an art form, most of us tend to exclusively credit the visual component of the film, i.e. cinematography, topped off with the occasional thought on editing. The sonic component of film, however, is unjustly ignored most of the time. Sure, we know the name Hans Zimmer from Gladiator or Danny Elfman from Batman and most recently Spider-Man 2, but how many of us know who recorded the location sound on Master and Commander? The goal of Ton & Traum is to give the film-soundtrack the credit it deserves.

Or the monthly updates for the new releases? The four-color brochures for the players were very well done and really made the CED machines look state of the art. Today its amazing to even think of a needle in the groove system as having any future! Each month RCA would issue a brochure listing the movies coming out on disc for that month. I saved these brochures and have quite a few of them. At that time laserdisc was promising a lot of titles but very slow to deliver. RCA was gaining a good reputation because when they said a title would be available during a specific month it would almost always appear on the dealers shelf.

I'm still looking to buy a CED player with stereo and video line outputs. The SGT250 would do fine, I think. Anyone have one they'd like to part with? Neil - [email protected] ------------------------------------------------------------------------ From: (Neil Wagner) To: [email protected] Subject: Videodisc History, Part 5 Date: Sun, 29 Dec 1996 17:28:53 GMT X-Newsreader: Forte Free Agent 1.0.82 More from my collection of old Popular Science magazines: >From the November 1979 "Look and Listen" - JVC updates VHD/AHD player A new version of its VHD/AHD (high-density video and audio) disc system was unveiled by JVC in the U.S. several months ago. JVC's disc player uses a mechanical-contact stylus to play two-sided, two-hour video discs; hardware might be marketed next year. An optional adapter can be plugged into JVC's player, enabling it to play pulse-code-modulation (PCM) audio discs with extraordinarily high fidelity. (Magnavox's Magnavision optical-disc machine being sold in a few cities has a non-contact laser beam for signal readout and plays back only TV signals.) JVC's latest player differs from the hardware shown in Japan last year primarily in the method of loading discs. Instead of loading discs on the turntable like a conventional record player, you now slide a heavy plastic sleeve holding a disc into the machine.
