Side a Side B

Side a Side B Channelling equal parts sub-Saharan chants, “Trans-Europe Express”-era Kraftwerk, a love for nasty snare rolls, and a crossfader/delay pedal matchup that seems to be turning everyone’s head for sheer creativity, Cut Chemist drops a pair of beefed-up “club friendly” versions of tracks featured on his “Sound of the Police” CD/LP (ASS 004). A-side begins as a near-hypnotic Ethiopian sounding epic story as told by a chorus of female voices, punctuated with optimum intermittent cuts and stabs at an evolving pace, emerging on the other end as some sort of post-cut-and-paste stream of consciousness “speaks with his hands” composition... engaging and well-executed, perhaps intuitively, embracing the spirit of the African rhythms while adding to them with his “drums” (aka delay pedal) and turntable. B-side is an Afro-Brazilian piano-driven hybrid that recalls EWF while keeping the Batuque bounce rolling with female vocals again providing the juice. A must have for any fan of Cut Chemist, Jurassic 5 or African and South American inspired music from around the world. SIDE A Format: 12” Single Cat. No: ASS 005 1. The Compound After a four-year hiatus, Percy Carey, aka MF Grimm, returns to music with his eighth studio album You Only Live Twice: The Audio Graphic Novel. This 2xLP version is packaged in a gatefold jacket with an 11” square, 16-page comic book. Grimm’s reemergence sees the veteran New York rapper moving into a new phase in his career as an artist, one that has seen him venture into the realm of comic books and journalism (Complex Magazine, Splashdown). For the past three years, Grimm has gone from rapper to respected author thanks to the success of his Eisner-nominated, Glyph Award winning autobiographical graphic novel Sentences: The Life of MF Grimm. Admittedly, Grimm’s experience in the comic book industry helped him find the new creative voice he brings to Twice. The album features a engaging blend of powerful production (provided by Twiz the Beat Pro) intelligent lyrics, well-crafted story, and, of course, edgy artwork provided by Jim Mahfood a.k.a. Food One (Spider-Man and Kevin Smith’s Clerks), who illustrates the album’s accompanying comic book. After establishing himself as a lasting presence in underground Hip Hop over the past decade, MF Grimm looks ahead to the next 10 years with hunger and creativity on You Only Live Twice. • What Is the Meaning of All This? a Unit on Existential Thought in Literature
Craig 1 What is The Meaning of All This? A Unit on Existential Thought in Literature By Kevin Craig Dr. Peter Smagorinsky LLED 7408 The University of Georgia Rationale Craig 2 All great deeds and all great thoughts have a ridiculous beginning. -Albert Camus No matter what one’s social, ethnic, or religious status may be, we must all agree that adolescence is one of the more confusing times in life. Between a newly developing sense of personal identity and the inevitable, indecipherable hormonal changes taking place, students of high school age undergo transformations unlike any others they will ever experience. Because they occur as students enter the beginnings of adulthood, these changes may well inform, if not dictate, the rest of students’ lives. It is incumbent on the teachers of adolescents to stimulate young brains and transmit useful material that students may later use, but it is imperative that we help guide students through a time in their lives when they are just discovering their identities. The goal of this unit is not to assign everyone a new, more mature identity; rather, it is to provide students with an appropriate framework through which they may begin forming their own identities and continue to do so long after they graduate. In Bob Fecho’s words, I aim to provide students with “ample opportunities for students to use writing to explore who they are becoming and how they relate to the larger culture around them” (2011). Existentialism is a philosophical movement with many sub-movements, but the main question it asks is “Who am I in relation to the universe?” On existentialism, Raymond C.

CITY AND COUNTY OF SAN FRANCISCO EDWIN M. LEE, MAYOR OFFICE OF SMALL BUSINESS REGINA DICK-ENDRIZZI, DIRECTOR Legacy Business Registry Staff Report HEARING DATE JULY 10, 2017 ROOKY RICARDO’S RECORDS Application No.: LBR-2016-17-067 Business Name: Rooky Ricardo’s Records Business Address: 419 Haight Street District: District 5 Applicant: Richard Vivian, Owner Nomination Date: January 26, 2017 Nominated By: Supervisor London Breed Staff Contact: Richard Kurylo [email protected] BUSINESS DESCRIPTION Rooky Ricardo’s Records is a vintage record store located in the Lower Haight neighborhood that opened in 1987. The shop was started by Richard “Dick” Vivian and specializes in rare and underappreciated vinyl records of musical genres such as soul, funk, jazz, rock, and oldies from the 50s and 60s. Originally located at 448 Haight Street, Rooky Ricardo’s brought African American soul music to the diverse population of the Lower Haight and offered and continues to offer well-curated old soul and rock 45s. Over the years, Rooky Ricardo’s has become an important fixture in the neighborhood, celebrating the rich artistic and musical history of the Lower Haight and becoming a place of art, culture, discovery and community along Haight Street. After 29 years in the same location, the shop was eventually forced to relocate due to an increase in rent. In order to ensure continued service to the Lower Haight community and the continued tradition of celebrating vibrant art and music culture of community’s history, Vivian moved the shop across the street to 419 Haight Street. Rooky Ricardo’s Records continues to be a vibrant place for the community to discover “new old” music and has become a vital part of the Lower Haight community and economy, attracting both tourists and locals to walk in and explore the selection of unique music and sample records at the listening stations set up in the store, which have become a key component of experiencing the shop.
