Channelling equal parts sub-Saharan chants, “Trans-Europe Express”-era Kraftwerk, a love for nasty snare rolls, and a crossfader/delay pedal matchup that seems to be turning everyone’s head for sheer creativity, Cut Chemist drops a pair of beefed-up “club friendly” versions of tracks featured on his “Sound of the Police” CD/LP (ASS 004). A-side begins as a near-hypnotic Ethiopian sounding epic story as told by a chorus of female voices, punctuated with optimum intermittent cuts and stabs at an evolving pace, emerging on the other end as some sort of post-cut-and-paste stream of consciousness “speaks with his hands” composition... engaging and well-executed, perhaps intuitively, embracing the spirit of the African rhythms while adding to them with his “drums” (aka delay pedal) and turntable. B-side is an Afro-Brazilian piano-driven hybrid that recalls EWF while keeping the Batuque bounce rolling with female vocals again providing the juice. A must have for any fan of Cut Chemist, Jurassic 5 or African and South American inspired music from around the world. SIDE A Format: 12” Single Cat. No: ASS 005 1. The Compound After a four-year hiatus, Percy Carey, aka MF Grimm, returns to music with his eighth studio album You Only Live Twice: The Audio Graphic Novel. This 2xLP version is packaged in a gatefold jacket with an 11” square, 16-page comic book. Grimm’s reemergence sees the veteran New York rapper moving into a new phase in his career as an artist, one that has seen him venture into the realm of comic books and journalism (Complex Magazine, Splashdown). For the past three years, Grimm has gone from rapper to respected author thanks to the success of his Eisner-nominated, Glyph Award winning autobiographical graphic novel Sentences: The Life of MF Grimm. Admittedly, Grimm’s experience in the comic book industry helped him find the new creative voice he brings to Twice. The album features a engaging blend of powerful production (provided by Twiz the Beat Pro) intelligent lyrics, well-crafted story, and, of course, edgy artwork provided by Jim Mahfood a.k.a. Food One (Spider-Man and Kevin Smith’s Clerks), who illustrates the album’s accompanying comic book. After establishing himself as a lasting presence in underground Hip Hop over the past decade, MF Grimm looks ahead to the next 10 years with hunger and creativity on You Only Live Twice.
