Budget: Disaster averted for the DD community, but we are not out of the woods yet The budget pact means an estimated $306.5 million in new general fund money fo the state's developmental disability system serving nearly 300,000 residents. Money will be used for rate increases for the 21 regional centers and their contracted vendors....

Interview: Developmental disability meets criminal justice, with SARC's Jim Elliott We have increasingly been hearing frightening stories about individuals with autism or other developmental disabilities getting caught in the criminal justice system after episodes of disruptive or difficult behaviors. To better understand what happens when our children or grown children are accused of a crime, we spoke recently with Jim Elliott, MSW, Manager, Community Placement Program and Public Policy Compliance, San Andreas Regional Center....

Bravo, Special Needs Talent Showcase!

Congratulations to visionary Anna Wang and Friends of Childrens with Special Needs for sponsoring their second annual Special Needs Talent Showcase on last Saturday, March 19 at the Santa Clara Convention Center. The 27 talented performers shone like superstars, and performed before a full house of over 600 audience members, five prominent judges and the returning emcee anchorman Matt Keller. Each winner received a $500 cash prize, a trophy, a commendation by California Assembly member Kansen Chu, who also served as a judge, and a performance­quality promotional video by Galaxy Media to be used to showcase their talents for future performance engagements. Other finalists received a $100, a trophy and a commendation. Honorable mention performers received a parting gift from the Golden State Warriors and a commendation as well.
