churchhaschurch has 50 adult members of the tarawa branch the AKAS school buildings were used it will be officially recognized and will be allowed to bring for church meetings the sudden drop in enrollment caused a foreign proselyting missionaries into the gilbert islandsIs lands 24 crisis for the school for it had debts that were being paid in effect this policy made it impossible to establish a new through student tuition in order to save the school and also to church or so it seemed in his survey of gilbert affairs maintain the churchs base of operation the church education president davis learned that only six or seven petperpep cent of all system CES provided a modest amount of financial help to keep children ages twelve through seventeen were offered any the school solvent CES also decided to send a professional educational opportunities the AKAS school had successfusuccessfulsuccesssuccessfullyfu I1 ly teacher grant howlethewletthowletthewiettt and his wife pat to tarawa from liahona avoided the governments policy by sending students to various high school the rowlettshowlettsHow letts were called on a church service basis church schools outside the gilbert islands now the board was they and their five children arrived in the gilberts in august attempting to send students to liahona high school president 1976 davis decided to recommend that twelve gilbertese students be brother hewletthewietthowlett became headmaster of the school and enrolled on a trial basis this recommendation was accepted by established excellent relations with the ministry of education church officials and in late 1972 george puckett through his guidance the AKAS school remained open and the superintendent of church schools in tonga and an associate went enrollment increased from seventeen to seventythreeseventy three students by to tarawa and selected twelve students the following year early 1977 even though the roman catholic bishop demanded that twelve more AKAS students were accepted members of his church withdraw from the school brother hewletthewietthowlett during 1972 and 1973 president davis sensed a certain offered the students so much that the enrollment did not decline amount of hostility from the government toward the church and only a short time after elder howletthewletthewiett arrived he began AKAS in july 1974 however the attitude of hewletthewietthowlett and the church welcomed LDS efforts in this field25field 25 the local government withdrew the school from official registra- by the end of 1976 sixty gilbertese students had been tion and made it heehecnecessaryessaryessery for the CES to either take over the enrolled in liahona high school all of these students were school or to allow it to be closed down CES decided to take nonmormonsnon mormons when they arrived in tonga however all but three or over the schoolaschoolqschool lease the property on which it stands and jourfour joined the church once again liahona high missionaries in august 25 1955 president joseph fielding smith visited guam and an effort to train and strengthen these young men president dedicated it to the preaching of the gospel in january 1957
