NORWICH DIOCESAN SYNOD Minutes of a meeting held at Northgate High School, East Dereham, NR19 2EU Saturday 23rd March 2019 The Chair was taken by The Revd Canon Sally Theakston (Chair of the House of Clergy) OPENING PRAYERS Opening prayers were led by David Anderson (Repps). 1. THE MINUTES OF THE MEETING HELD ON 13th OCTOBER 2018 Under item 3 on page 1 David Griffith (Thetford and Rockland) stated the amendments made to the minutes for 23rd June 2018 were incorrect and should state the following correction: “…The Standing Advisory Committee (SACRE) is responsible for the production of the locally Agreed Syllabus for RE which is given to schools once the Agreed Syllabus Conference have written it…” The minutes were then approved and signed as a true record. 2. MATTERS ARISING FROM THE PREVIOUS MEETING There were no matters arising. Before commencing item 3 the Diocesan Secretary promulgated the following:- “At its February 2019 group of sessions, held in London, the General Synod resolved that Amending Canon No. 38 be made promulged and executed. Amending Canon No.38 replaces the former Canon B 43 (relations with other Churches) and Canon B 44 (local ecumenical projects) with a new Canon B 43 to be entitled “Of ecumenical relations.” 3. LENT APPEAL 2019 The Bishop of Lynn first asked permission for guest speakers The Revd Canon Richard Bartlett (Director of Mission Engagement at USPG) and Davidson Solanki (USPG Programme Manager for Asia) to present to Synod. Approval was given. 1 The Bishop of Lynn introduced this item by explaining that in the intervening years of supporting Papua New Guinea, this year the chosen 2019 Lent Appeal did not have a direct connection with the Diocese but a close working relationship with USPG and the work they are doing to prevent human trafficking. -

Minutes of a Meeting with Bedford Borough Council Highways Department, Borough Cllr. T. Wootton, and representatives from Staploe, Little Staughton, Colmworth and Bolnhurst and Keysoe Parish Councils on Wednesday 19th February 2020 at 2pm at Keysoe Village Hall, Keysoe Row West, Bedford MK44 2JE Present: Andrew Prigmore (Bedford Borough Council Highways Dept.), Borough Cllr. T. Wootton, Lucy Crawford (Clerk to Staploe Parish Council), Cllr. Veronica Zwetsloot (Staploe Parish Council), Cllr. Kevin Head (Little Staughton Parish Council), Cllr. Gordon Johnstone (Wyboston Parish Council), Cllr. Martina Perry (Bolnhurst and Keysoe Parish Council) and Cllr. Beverley Brightman (Colmworth Parish Council). Apologies: Gareth Turner (Bedford Borough Council Highways Department) 1. Consider the introduction of a 50mph limit on Bushmead Road All the parish councils represented supported the introduction of reduced speed limits on the Bushmead Road to a maximum of 50mph but KH suggested it should be 40mph in places. They recounted witnessing several nasty accidents on the road (one requiring an airlift to hospital). They also recounted many near misses some of which they believed were due to large HGV’s passing at speed when the road is not wide enough and cars being forced into the middle of the road by potholes. They acknowledged that recent repairs had improved the worst areas of the road but were concerned that some areas with failing patches had not been addressed. Andrew Prigmore explained that the worst areas had been repaired at a cost of approximately £70K but they had to choose the worst areas due to their limited budget. He reported that police data showed that none of the accidents on the road had been directly caused by excess speed. -

O. Prestwich, has been the importance of the king’s household knights. In his first book, War, Politics and Finance under Edward I, published in 1972, Michael asked and answered such key questions as ‘how were [knights] recruited for the household, how long did they serve, and what were their rewards?’ He showed that the knights, a body about 100 strong in 1284–5, formed the core of royal armies, and ‘might also be used on matters of state quite unconnected with the business of campaigning’. -

From the Bishop of Oxford As a Diocese, we are prayerfully seeking the person whom God is calling to be the next Bishop of Dorchester, one of three Area bishops in the Diocese of Oxford. At the heart of our vision we discern a call to become a more Christ-like Church for the sake of God’s world: contemplative, compassionate and courageous. Most of all we are seeking a new Bishop for Dorchester who will seek to model those qualities and inspire the Church of England across the Dorchester Area to live them out in our daily lives. Our new Bishop will therefore be a person of prayer, immersed in the Scriptures and the Christian tradition, able to be at home with and to love the clergy, parishes and benefices in many different church traditions and many different social contexts. We are seeking a person able to watch over themselves in a demanding role and to model healthy and life-giving patterns of ministry. We want our new bishop to be an inspiring leader of worship, preacher and teacher in a range of different contexts and to be a pastor to the ministers of the Area. The Bishop of Dorchester leads a strong and able Area Team in taking forward the common vision of the Diocese of Oxford in the Dorchester Area. The evaluation of Bedfordshire burial registration, L538-L851 Peter Razzell, Christine Spence and Matthew Woollard Abstract This article is based mainly on a digital transcript of burials for 126 Bedfordshire parishes 7538-7851, and a county index of wills for the same period. The comparison of probate with burial register data indicated that there uas little long-term change oaer time in burial tmder-registratiott, with between 21 and 27 per cent of utill entries missing in the registers. There was also little aariation between parishes of dffirent population sizes, suggesting that burial tmder-registratiot'L was predominantly a random process linked to clerical negligence. A comparison of 1841 and L851 census data, linked to the Bedfordshire burial database, reaealed thnt missing burials amongst married couples was 29 per cent, similar to that found in the probatelburial register comparison in the 1840s. These findings on the adequacy of burial registers -saggesf thnt similar resesrch on others counties will be necessary in order to establish reliable conclusions about England's population history. Introduction One of the major issues of historical demography has been the reliability of Anglican parish registers and its relationship to English population history in the period 1538-1850.1 Assumptions about the reliability of registers have had a major effect on the interpretation of population change, and this has had a significant impact on the debate about the nature of population growth during the 'parish register period'. Much of the uncertainty about demographic change is due to the inflation factors used for the correction of missing births and deaths in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. -
