Under heightened forms of interurban competition fueled by processes of globalization, there is a desire by place- makers to construct and market a unique sense of place. While there is consensus that place promotion plays a role in reconstructing landscapes, how place differentiation operates – and can be operationalized – in processes of urban redevelopment is under- theorized in the literature. In this thesis, I produce a typology of four strategies of differentiation – negation, coherence, residue, multiplicity – which reside within capital transformations and which require activation by a set of social actors. I situate these ideas via an examination of the redevelopment of the Gooderham and Worts distillery, renamed the Distillery District, which opened to the public in 2003. Under the direction of the private sector, the site was transformed from a space of alcohol production to a space of cultural consumption. The developers used a two pronged approach for the site‟s redevelopment: historic preservation and arts-led regeneration. Using a mixed method approach including textual analysis, in-depth interviews, visual analysis, and site observation, I examine the strategies used to market the Distillery as a distinct place, and the effects of this marketing strategy on the valuation of art, history, and space.

The proposed office building is 37 storeys (174 metres including mechanical penthouse) and the two residential towers are 66 and 62 storeys (233 and 224 metres respectively including mechanical penthouse) each with a combined total of approximately 1,305 dwelling units. There are three storeys of commercial retail proposed in the base of the podium. The proposal integrates the elevated PATH pedestrian bridge spanning from 85 Harbour Street to the Air Canada Centre (40 Bay Street) along the easterly perimeter of the building on the second floor. This report reviews and recommends approval in principle of the Official Plan Amendment and Zoning By-law Amendment subject to the provision of parking in accordance with the requirements as set out in this report. Wright Dear Colleague, Attached is the 41st version of the Educational Technology and Education Conference List. The events for May and June 2019 have been updated since distribution of the previous list. As it is impossible to note every legitimate conference that is planned, this is a SELECTED list of professional development opportunities. It is prudent to take the time to conduct your own due diligence for any events you want to attend or submit a paper to. Information on the list was accurate on the distribution date. When you view the list, information may have changed – such as the dates and venue –and some may have been cancelled. Dates often change by one or two days and this can affect your flight and hotel arrangements. When I assemble the list, I need to quickly discern whether an event is legitimate and/or quality focused. The events may be held to attract papers which people plagiarize (and then publish the papers in their local language and receive academic or scientific credit) and/or to gather funds and offer little in return. These conferences may also use the same "keynote" speakers from year to year, indicate that the names and titles of those of the program committee are pending (but regardless of when I return to the web site, the program committee members' names, institutional affiliation, and e-mail addresses are still pending), list people on their site without a way of contacting them, promise to publish submitted papers for a fee (this fee can amount to several hundred dollars), charge a low fee for attendees but a higher fee for presenters, and/or have initial query forms that require too much detailed personal information (these can be used to steal your identity).
